Bridges -here we go again

Boaters

Recommended Posts

This is outrageous, as I was told last year that they had a program of closures for this year - specifically on school holidays as this is when they lose the least revenue - If you remember I wasn't even dignified by a reply from Network Rail, however our MP was and they categorically said this was not the case!!!!

Hmm more truths from NR??? I think not!

The Broads Authority’s director of navigation, Trudi Wakelin, told Thursday’s meeting of the navigation committee that they had only recently been informed of the work by Network Rail – less than two months before half-term, the last major boating opportunity of the season.

She said the period of work coincided with a high spring tide, further restricting the number of craft that could pass under the bridges at high water, especially at Somerleyton where the clearance was lower. She said: “I would be surprised if businesses up river of Somerleyton at Oulton Broad and Beccles don’t notice an impact on trade.â€

Ms Wakelin said she and authority chief executive John Packman would be meeting Network Rail’s director of asset management, John Halsall, early next month to discuss the issues

Firstly this is a complete LIE - HOW DARE the BA say that they have only recently been informed of this work - I personally posted this earlier this year, then the BA themselves said in BROADCASTER that this work was happening - see here

viewtopic.php?f=72&t=10577&p=127965&hilit=somerleyton+bridge#p127965

Secondly - John Packman will meet them EARLY NEXT M ONTH to discuss this - nice to see the Navigation Committee (The same one who when recently advertised for new members didn't even bother to reply to those that applied!!!) nor the BA taking this seriously

The reality is, as has been proven before, the BA are WEAK and when in a corner result to telling UNTRUTHS to cover themselves!

This time round, because of the tides - nearly all private craft including some larger hire boats at high water, the initial information released earlier this year also mentioned river clsures to facilitate under bridge works...

What has made me REALLY REALLY angry is how BA say they have only just been informed of this work when clearly the Navigation Committee don't even bother reading the BA's own publications!!!

If you do a search on previous threads on NBN regarding this you will see one very clear pattern

Network Rail do as they wish, Broads non-Authority roll over and are completely weak, do nothing, despite having an act of parlianebt on their side which can prevent NR in acting this way. Well worth a read, and many many boaters threatened to withold toll payments for last year and I know some who are still standing their gound on that one in the hope the case will go to court!

The fact is it is the BA who are at fault for rolling over and being so weak whilst NR, with more money and power just roll them as a supermarket does a supplier, into doing exactly what it wants

But why LIE.... Yes it isn't the first time - BA have lost just about all credibility as an authority... just think of other things it went back on this year... remember the "If we get the grant we will review taking the £250,000 from the toll payers account for administration.... then "Despite receiving a grant from the EU of £800,000 we will not change our plans for taking £1.3million from the toll account over the next four years starting with the first installment of £250,000 this year..."

I could go on, but words fail me! :-|

Best you right a letter to them then Gav. It'd be interesting to see how they would deal with a reply to you... and how they defend the fact they have lied?

At least Clive has one boat that will fit now following it's unscheduled re-modelling!

The point here is that yesterdy they said they had only JUST been informed of these workd and yet in the Network Rail interview in the Broad Sheet it plainly said the works would take place in October!!

As for a letter - I'd hold little hope of a reply, they didn't even bother to reply to those that applied for the Navigation Committee places..!!!

And yes I've seen that boat of Clives!!!!

Tell us more Mark, what happened, which boat and where?. Is there already a thread on it?.

Times will be as important as the height, if the low period is at the right time then the spring tides (all else being equal) will have low lows as well as high highs so decent clearance may be available without a swing. Obviously not for taller boats but anything up to around 10’ and you may well still be able to transit at the right times.
