belated points from august hols

took out a richardson 2 berth 12-19th aug , nicely refitted so may have been the one that sank the week b4 us in 2009.

no probs with boat bar expected leaking windows going up the ant in torrential rain on last day.

fri: left a little later than planned & attacked by wasps on the A1(was the week of swarms) though they were gone by the following friday, and made it from stalham to acle for a planned early start to breydon. Better atmosphere at the bridge this time.

sat: made good time to stracey then seemed to lose a bit , decided to moor @ the quays and walk down to the yacht station, vandalism of quays , being the only boat in miserable weather & a few kids around not a good combination.

Yacht station said good have got the bath tub straight through but best wait till noon (as they had said on the phone b4 although the boatyard had said early eve @ best). Got across safely & wasn't damaged @ marina quays (how did it become so unsafe in a year or two?) bit rainy but not choppy on breydon & glorious weather on reaching the wherry where managed to get 2 discount carveries courtesy of the next boat. Enjoyed lady of the lake pub again and shame its closing.

sun visited lowestoft and headed for tea @ loddon. was the river to loddon as narrow 20 years ago :) . managed to get in a gap near the village courtesy of some helpful private boats & ate wonderful food @ the white horse.

Mon: delayed due to good weather so skipped reedham & quick lunch on board @ berney to cross breydon in better weather & enjoyably choppy water. quick stop @ stracey to see now charging for mooring to cover insurance costs??. Made it to potter heigham but just missed the falgate for food. Didn't fancy the broadshaven but the maltsters people were making improvements to the front room and it now has live music.

contd:

tues: usual enjoyable suntrap @ womack followed by trip to horning. disappointed open mic nite ended though good chat with the legendary gus and food ok. Nice to see the ferry open though horning seems more welcoming to day boats @ the moment much to one locals displeasure.

wed: got to wroxham , high water and undecided re coltishall after getting in loynes yard which has usually been full. Found the shed bar while crew shopping. What a great place. chances to try all of norfolks micro brews , friendly & like a pub should be. Amazed by the wine box concept & after one of the big stonebass @ the bridge restaurant made a 3rd visit of the day to the shed. Was told authorities want to curtail it as a bar & make it more foodie, WHY? All the other bars are more carveries than pubs whats wrong with a no nonsense beer place not needing food to survive?

thurs back to stalham via eanworth & trip up the tower & look round the wherry boat. Conditions bad so went to the village rather than muddy path to the harnser. Found the swan much improved for better food.

Fri worried re fuel after getting warning letter re usage being above deposit, prev increases 2009, not doing breydon @ v.slack but only doing loddon instead of coltishall came to bout same as 2009 receiving some change. Unlike a poss 6-8 berth boat that had returned and gone about 100.00 over on just the northern rivers...........How??

Easy to go over the £100.00 just go everywhere at WOT (wide open throttle) like some seem to do! I guess they regret it when returning the boat and finding out they have gone over the £100!

Exactly so, once a displacement boat gets past its designed hull speed then fuel usage increases out of all proportion for what is a very small increase in speed and MPG reduces by a huge factor.

Quite so, David. That huge bow-wave one often sees is simply, in aeronautical terms, "drag" and increases directly in proportion to the square of the speed... (Help, please, Rod!).

The amount of water a boat moves always amazes me, think how power you would need to move that amount of water with a pump!
