Feeling A Bit Miffed

Recommended Posts

I had the misfortune to crack a back tooth last week . On contacting my usual dentist I was told  that they were now only carrying out private treatment. Thinking that  the priority was to get it sorted I asked how much they would charge  to remove the broken piece and they said the charge would be £85.00 which would include x rays and any tablets needed.  It obviously neded to be treated so I agreed.  I was asked to pay the  fee  immediately before attending which I did. the dentist had a prod about as they do and announced that it needed specialist care possibly at a private hospital but first I needed a course of antibiotics as an abcess had  started to form. I had suspected this . I queried the need for a specialist asking why trhe dentist  couldn't just remove the broken piece now  and leave the rest of the tooth as it was. He admitted he could but there was a risk it could cause problems in the future. So I asked that if I was prepared to risk thart could he go ahead and take out the  broken piece. He said no a special appointment would have  to be made incurring a further charge of £109.00. apparently ther £85.00 was simply for the consultation and x rays I have even had to pay for the tablets.  I feel ripped off. I spoke to the practice manager pointing out that I had been mislead in to paying the £85.00 but there was no satisfaction to be had.  I enquired at my doctor's surgery about obtaining a prescription for antibiotics to be told that doctors no longer prescribe for mouth problems. What a horrible place the world is becoming.

I know exactly how you feel.   You need a second mortgage to keep your nashers in shape these days.   The world has gone mad, same as vet bills,  they never used to be what they are now, all driven by insurance companies.   I used to take the cat to the vets and including the tablets , unless it was a yearly vaccination , it was usually £20 tops.     They now want £20 just to take a phone call.

You’re more likely to find a live unicorn than a National Health dentist , certainly here in Norfolk.  I found a private dentist, who was taking on new patients, near home last summer.  I called and had an initial appointment - cost £150.  Recommendations were three fillings, total cost just shy of £800.  I had to defer further treatment due to cost, but a couple of months later developed a toothache.  Had another appointment (cost £45) where I was given the option of extraction (cost £150) or root canal treatment, plus something else that I didn’t understand and a crown (total cost £1500).  I went for extraction.

Just last Friday (10th March), following some routine blood tests taken on Tuesday 21st February, I was told I needed to speak to a nurse (not a doctor, I stress) about my cholesterol, which is slightly raised.  The first face to face appointment I was offered - Thursday 20th April.  My raised cholesterol is clearly something that they regard as urgent, then!

No more Portuguese Tarts for you!!  :default_eusa_naughty:

When I moved to Norfolk I'd heard about the lack of NHS dentists, as I visit the office in Warwick every month or so I kept my dentist there!

The dentist I was registered with back in Northampton has gone private too, so whichever way I look at it, I’m facing dentistry enforced poverty!

As for Portuguese tarts, I’m sure that I’ll be able to force myself to indulge occasionally!

I feel your pain . Both physically and financially.

It is truly tragic to see our once gold standard , envy of the world , NHS slip from our grasp.

Hopefully your on the mend , on a plus note, the best pain killer for toothache is whisky . So, have a wee dram and relax 😜

during covid, my dentist changed their policy and said they would contact me for the next appointment, then they didnt ask to make a next appointment, I now find that as I hadnt had a checkup in a year I have been taken off their books as a nhs patient, but I wasnt given the opportunity to go for a checkup, apparently policy changed again and i was supposed to somehow know i needed to book an appointment to stay NHS, a few years ago they became a BUPA dentist, so I think they have used covid as an excuse to clear out all of the remaining NHS patients, and of course nowhere around is taking on NHS patients any more.

The only funny tale I have of the dentists was once we were talking and he said he had to take his dog to the vets, and he was charged a small fortune for antibiotics for the dog, he said if he had known thats what the dog needed he could have taken some home from the dentists surgery for a lot less than he was charged, as they were exactly the same tablets.

Thank you for the tip.  however, whisky isn't my tipple so I substituted that for wine in suitable quantities. Sadly the tooth remains broken but I feel a whole lot bettter about it.

There's a happy ending to this situation. I found a number on  line giving access to walk-in NHS dental treatment I  phoned at 8.30 this morning and was given an  appointment in Wisbech ( fairly close to us) for 10.15 am.  Saw a  super dentist who gave me the most pain free treatment I've ever had, whole job done in minutes. She removed the broken section of tooth and covered  the remaining section of  it with a filling. Cost £23.80. She also gave me a number to ring to give me access to a NHS dentist although she did point that I may have to travel as our area was the worst in the country availability of NHS dentists.

  • 3 weeks later...

I had an issue with my doctors, recently they upped one of my medications, well naturally on the higher dose i ran out of tablets early, so i filled in the form online for a repeat, and it came back- refused, naturally I phoned the surgery, to be told it was refused because it was too soon after a previous prescription, i mentioned that was because they had doubled the dose, so i left it with them, next day i was completely out of tablets, online still showed as refused, so I went to the pharmacy, where they presented me with 2 prescriptions, one dated back to eearly march when they upped my dose, they had sent the prescription to the pharmacy, but didnt consider that telling me might be a good idea so I knew it was there.
