Hearts Cruisers 1950s

Recommended Posts

What a fascinating piece of history,  showing a different time, of a place so many recognise.

Brought to life by the voice of Vaughan.

I shuddered at the memory of wearing shorts in the snow.

Thank you M and Vaughan.

I remember the coasters well. Back in the 70s, if we were fishing at langley and the coaster came along, you had to grab your gear and scramble up the bank. First of all the water level would drop quite a bit on its approach, when the coaster was past, there was an enormous wash sent back and if you hadn't moved you and your gear got a soaking as it came well over the bank.

We also need to thank Carol Gingell of Broadland Memories.  I had already had these films of my mother's put on cassettes and Carol had them transferred to DVD.  We then had the idea of putting a voice-over on them, to explain what we were seeing.

There was no script as such : we just sat in the lounge at home in Thorpe and played the tapes 3 times on the TV, while I chatted about what they contained and Carol recorded it.  Meantime Susie poured the wine and Wussername was there to ensure fair play!

Carol then took all this away and did a marvellous job of editing all my comments into the right places.

In fact, there is another film, from the same tapes, on the Broadland memories Youtube site, called Hearts Cruisers.

I agree Carol has done so much for Broadland Memories.    A big thank you to Carol and of course yourself.      My favourite scene was when you boys were playing in the snow when you were all young.     Priceless memories.

Interesting as you say Vaughn, very little damage in those days, undoubtedly because handovers were comprehensive and I doubt you would have let anyone out unless they could demonstrate that they could handle the boats to a minimum standard.

Just to add, That's not to say that handovers are not up to standard today, its just that back then, people used to treat things as their own. How many times do you hear nowadays things like that's what insurance is for. Not everyone I know, but yes that is what insurance is for but unfortunately, that's one of the factors that puts everyone's insurance up.

Jenners boat yard was at Town House in Thorpe St Andrew. Between Hearts cruisers and Wards. All three boat yards were situated within the island with a railway bridge at each end of the island. The two railway bridges contributed to the viability of the yards in a negative way and together with other factors all three boat yards, successful boat yards, now cease to exist.

Sadly that part of the river Yare is now a shadow of its former self.

You can say that again.   It used to be beautiful looking at the film.    Now it seems to be just the opposite.

I remember several occasions, sitting in my dads car during the 60s and 70s, as we drove past (this was the main Gt Yarmouth road in those days) on our way to visit family, the Island always looked tidy.

Even during the late 70s early 80s on the odd occasion I fished from the green it looked nice still.

I haven't been there for a long while until, due to such a wet winter we had, with all the rivers being "out of sorts" with high levels etc   I fished from the green a few times as my usual haunts were not going to fish well in these conditions. What a difference. It all looks run down. The boats on the Island looked un cared for. It was very sad to see the place like this as it was no were like I remembered it.

I understand how you feel but at least it is still a going concern as a boatyard business, which supports a thriving community of boating folk.  If the BA planning dept had had their way, it would now be just an overgrown, "re- wilded" railway embankment.  No way would you get planning for anything else - especially not from Thorpe council.
