Something Happening Over Wroxham Broad

Woken up 30 mins ago by this hovering over Wroxham Broad, has been shining a searchlight over the southern entrance area.  There’s some bright lights over at the slipway but nothing flashing blue.

Not sure what time the coastguard left but they haven’t found anyone yet.  The policeman at Wroxham yacht club couldn’t tell me anymore.

The coastguard will be back onsite soon to continue the search.

Sad but I was expecting such news when they hadn't been found in the first few hours, been thinking about it all weekend. Sadly I never heard a thing until the helicopter arrived.  If I had I may have been able to help.

I suspect the full truth won't come out now until after an inquest, but one thing which has been suggested is that they went in and never resurfaced. Unfortunately, if that was the case, the chances of your being able to do anything to change the outcome would have been slim to non-existant, especially in the dark, so you shouldn't feel the slightest remorse.

Sadly, the best thing you can take away from these things is to use it as a warning to others. I've witnessed two incidents so far this year, which could have had similar outcomes but, thankfully, both happened in daylight with others in close proximity. One involved excess alcohol and both had no life jackets. A lot of the time, it'll fall on deaf ears, but we just need to collectively keep drumming safety messaging into people. It's something like the 4th drowning on the Broads in just over 12 months. I suspect at least 3 wouldn't have occurred if lifejackets were in use.

Unfortunately not my first case of being involved with a drowning either.  I can and I suspect many of us can make a few assumptions on what might have happened, best to keep quiet until the inquest.

Condolences to the family.
