Im after a bit of advice. For the last few years we have hired boats from Broom Boats in Brundall. I believe its now been sold, who owns it now? Is the yard still hiring? We used to hire a Captain or Skipper.  Can I hire these from anywhere else? Any help appreciated.

The yard has been acquired by Horning Pleasure craft and they will continue hiring  the Brundle based Broom fleet , as the new owners are very much “Broadsmen” rest assured the company is in the best of hands and the service if anything will be far better than in recent years .

I should just like to add some balance to that. I hired from Brooms this year. The service was great, the people we dealt with were really friendly, and the boat was first class. Plus booking through Hoseasons all worked well as it usually does in my experience.

Just my opinion ... but I think we should reserve judgement until the operation is up and running.

The new owner of Brooms has a small fleet at Horning Pleasurecraft which used to be bookable through Hoseasons. They made the decision to switch to direct booking about a year ago, and I’m sure they wouldn’t have decided to do likewise for the Brooms fleet if that hadn’t worked out well for them and their customers. Personally, I’ve never booked through Hoseasons. When we hired we always chose a boatyard that did direct booking (Ferry Marina and NBD).

By the way, our syndicate boat has been moored at Horning Pleasurecraft for the last two years+ and we have been very happy with the service we’ve received there. We were previously moored at Brooms.

Hi Steve,

Our website is all back up and running again, we had a few server issues but the only difference you should see compared to your last visit will be the lower prices, the great team you will have dealt with on the quay is still the same and the boats are all there  so please pay us a visit.  http://www.broomboats.com

Cheers, Clive

Hi

we have the White Heron booked for a week in October, I assume the booking will be honoured in full even though it was originally booked through Hoseasons?

It would be best to contact Brooms direct to confirm the booking.

I will speak up for Hoseasons in so much as when you book with them you do get cancellation insurance.   When I dont book through them I get UK holiday cancellation insurance through The Post Office.      At our time of life you never know what is going to crop up, hence the cancellation insurance.

If you pay by credit card you will probably be covered too but indeed, why pay twice if you already have post office insurance which would cover all holidays all year

Just need to correct this inadvertant perception. The credit card company would only cover the sale if the reason for the cancellation was a failure to supply the holiday by the retailer. No cover would be offered in the event of illness. I guess Monica takes out Post Office UK only insurance on a per-trip basis. Worldwide/European Only annual cover for people in their 70s, which I am, is very expensive.

Well it just so happens that this morning I did a quote on The Post Office web site and to be honest looking at what they want to charge us which was  over £150 for a week in the UK in a holiday cottage,   with an excess of £250 and that was the basic option , it went up and up with plus this and plus that.       Decided with what our holiday is going to cost , which is not thousands of pounds,  just over the thousand,    it just isnt worth it on the holidays booked that are not Hoseasons but I will always go for the option to pay an enhanced cancellation with Hoseasons it is well worth it.     Called peace of mind.

We dont possess passports so our holidays are always in and around The Broads area or North Norfolk.

At our ages nearing 80 to go for annual cancellation option in the UK is unaffordable.

So well done Hoseasons.

We've had great experiences with Hoseasons and booked quite a few holidays with them both on the Broads and in other parts of England. Good prices and lovely accommodation with no problems at all.

We have never had a problem with Hoseasons and they offer a wide range of choices, consistently described.

Booking direct with the Holiday provider (or indeed large booking agents) often gets keener prices or loyalty bonuses and more flexibility (eg over start days) however the cancellation terms can be less good or less clear.

Hoseasons can take quite a large cut for the services they provide - this must mean that the holiday is less profitable for the holiday provider.  I want broads boating holiday businesses to be successful and keep prices down for me.

Beware of holiday insurance that does not cover trips that are closer to home. I nearly took out a policy then realised that my holiday was not covered because it was within 150 miles of home.

Its quite common now for hotel providers to give at least two prices. One 'pay now, no refunds, no cancellation' and one 'pay on arrival, cancel or modify up to 1.00pm on the day of arrival' - or similar. Effectively you can pay a higher price to include cancellation - and cancellation is not limited to certain events like it is with insurance. Also you can use it to gamble with dynamic pricing. I recently booked a room at a well known budget chain - frequented by Lenny Henry - I cancelled and rebooked twice. Ended up paying nearly 30% less than the original price.

We recently booked a two night stay in a hotel in Swindon so that my wife could visit her brother who was seriously ill in hospital.  I paid when booking as I could see no reason we would have to cancel.  It was sad that he died in the early hours of the morning that we were due to travel.  I cancelled the booking explaining why and did not get, or expect, a refund
