Safety Advice

This is being put out by the Broads Authority so I hope it’s ok to paste in here.

Please, no criticism of the BA on this thread. I’m just sharing this as practical points for every visitor to be aware of.

Are you visiting the Broads this bank holiday weekend? 🛟

We have had a spate of incidents in Norfolk's waterways in recent weeks, and we're joining in with other organisations to urge visitors to respect the water and keep themselves safe.

Each death in the water is one too many, and our condolences go out to everyone affected by these tragic incidents.

If you ever ask one of our Rangers for their top safety advice, this is what they'll be sure to tell you:

» Please remember to always wear a life-jacket, including children and your pets. They'll help you to have a higher chance of being recovered safely should you fall in the water.

» Take extra care when getting off and on your boat and watch out for mooring lines and other trip hazards.

» Be extra careful near the water if you're consuming alcohol, and don't operate your vessel under the influence. Alcohol impairs both balance and judgement, two things which don't mix well with our waterways.

» Open water swimming outside of organised events can be dangerous as the water is cold, there's often plants and hidden obstructions down below.

» Remember that if you do fall in, try not to panic and instead #FloatToLive, waiting for the cold water shock to pass.

» If you witness someone who has fallen in, try to throw them a line or something else to hold on to and don't immediately jump in after them. In emergency call the Coastguard on 999.

We're aware that many of you have heard these instructions before but you can never have too much knowledge on how to keep safe.

We hope you have an enjoyable (and most importantly) safe weekend.

If you have any problems call 999 in case of emergency or call 01603 756056 if you need to contact Broads Control.

Please share these tips with a mate or family-member to keep them safe and remember to look out for one another.
