Safety On Board

Looking at the BB webcam it seems that someone on a HW boat has no idea of safety on a boat.

The mudweight looks as if it is attached to a portion of spaghetti.    Surely this was seen when it was lowered or dropped into the water !!!!!

I notice there is also a large scrape mark on the bow , wonder if that was there before the boat was handed over to the current CAPTAIN ?

Unfortunately there are some folk out there who don't have any but safety on a boat is down to common sense. Each crew member should have a plan for man over board and each one knowing their job when mooring. We did this as a family and never had a problem apart from nudging the odd bank or tree. Oh, and knocking some  fishing rods in the river passing overhanging trees, lost a mop and tv aerial too :facepalm:common sense reminded us never to cruise past overhanging trees, secure the mop and take the aerial in in future :default_biggrin:

I think coming up to the end of season hire boats have a few battle scars, we are only human after all (some of us anyway) :default_biggrin:

The "common sense" failure is at 24:22 mins on the video, I wonder how many of them had a plan for man overboard!?

EDP today has an article featuring Dr.P talking about safety and the need to moderate alcohol intake. It seems to have come about as result of a nav committe meeting which discussed recent deaths on the Broads, and which drew the conclusion that hire yards are doing everything possible to promote safety messaging.

Ordinarily, I'm squarely on the side of the hire industry but, in light of recent events, and looking at that video, I can't help but think the hire industry statement might be wrong. It's hard to believe that there weren't warning signs when they picked the boat up. There's a time and place for the sort of behaviour shown in the video, but it's nowhere near the water and especially not on rural Broadland waterways.

Only my opinion but the old deposit system used to focus minds and take the Cavalier attitude away.  No car hire company will let you take a drive without a card swipe even if you've paid the damage waver.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this one was a stag party, in which case they should have paid a £500 security deposit.

I agree, they may have paid a £500 deposite. For what. Boat damage?

For argument. Ten crew. £50 each. They pay that and beyond for one night at home in thier local night clubs. Paid. Without consideration.

There needs to be a conversation as to how to manage this issue.
