grendel
I have acquired a new tool, a half price halloween offer was too good to miss so I bit the bullet and got myself a 40W laser cutter/ engraver, I have had it a whole 3 days now, so have been playing. it turns out that this is much better at cutting box joints than a router as it doesnt rip out the surrounding wood. so far today I have cut out 40 sides of the boxes, 20 each of long and short sides, and 25 base panels, I had already cut the sides to size and grooved them for the bases on the table saw, cuttig them on the laser just highlights how inconsistent my cuts were, not by a lot (less than 1mm) but now everything is being cut to perfect length and consistent sizes. still got another 15 boxes to cut the joints for. just awaiting a delivery of laser ply to cut out some personalised baubles for my teams christmas tree, so they each have a little pressie to take home at christmas. I have done a test, it doesnt work well with black over white traffolye label material as it just turns the inner layer black 9

floydraser Posted Friday at 15:43 Share Posted Friday at 15:43 Great bit of kit and I would love one. I never knew they were available and practical for DIY use. I'm off to do some research.. So modern tech is perfectly acceptable, just not in the car!

So modern tech is perfectly acceptable, just not in the car! yes, exactly. mine is the creality Falcon 2 40W machine, it was in their haloween sales for just over £660 I am quite happy with any machine that can utilise my CAD expertise, as then its a useful tool. recommended retail price is around £1250, though there are still deals out there, at that price I figured it was time to buy. it is supposed to engrave stainless steel too (but not brass) but I found the stainless warped horribly on the test piece I ran. (brass dissapates the heat of the laser too quickly for it to do much.) 2
floydraser Posted Friday at 22:05 Share Posted Friday at 22:05 I was excited by the thought of laser cutting because I have a model car project on a back burner which involves laser cutting 1mm steel sheet. I've done a test but it looks like we're not quite there yet for DIY. There'll be a video in due course.
grendel Posted Friday at 22:07 Author Share Posted Friday at 22:07 1mm sheet steel would probably need a co2 laser- a bit more expensive or a cnc mill
grendel Posted Saturday at 04:25 Author Share Posted Saturday at 04:25 the other option is a cnc plasma cutter, all these technologies use the same base software and technology

grendel Posted Sunday at 18:33 Author Share Posted Sunday at 18:33 400mm x 400mm is the size, it says it will do 15mm basswood, and I know it will do 9mm plywood
