hi all , hope you don't mind me asking on here, but can anyone please tell me what's happened to .co.uk forum, all i seem to get is a white page saying there's an internal error, ive tried 3 times today but can't get on, does anyone know what's going on ? i'm baffled, lori

I just tried looking at the NBF with Google Chrome but it is just searching, so it looks as if Richard is having problems again.

If you look at Norfolk Broads.co.uk I think it is Roys web site, it is literally full of spam.      I know what I would like to do with these cretins but it is unrepeatable.     What do they achieve except some perverted satisfaction.

NBF still down 9am but NB . Org. Had lots of spam last night and I know this is a big problem for them.I would have hoped to see some way of stopping them ,like they have done with nuisance calls.Cretins.

I have just done a quick check, and everything is still down at NBF, the NBO is still up and running, but as you say Roy, it appears that every thread has been attacked by the spammers, quite a task to sort out, especially with Hank being unwell at the moment.

Richard, if you are reading this, as in the past, the offer of using NBN to update your members to what is happening with NBF is still open to you, please feel free to post on this thread.

The error message from the NBF is being generated by their webserver, so it appears to be a software SQL problem, rather than the Broadband uplink or the hardware.

 

If it was the phone line or hardware, the URL would have stopped resolving by now, and we would be getting the "URL not found" error message.

 

As for the latest Spam attack on the NBO, it all appears to be coming from the same single new user ID "Inhichrhymn".

I haven't spoken to Richard, and therefore know no more than has already been posted, but it is worth remembering that Richard has a full time job as well as looking after the forum, so I would expect any problems that need resolving to be fitted in around that and may take some time. No updates on Facebook yet.

Sorry to hear that, Richard has had more than his fair share of hardware failure and the site decimated by spammers in the past.

Working for hours on end in a kitchen will not have improved his lot, catering is very hard work.

The NB.co.uk forum has always seemed very flakey and is often very slow.

 

It's probably about time that ColdFusion was abandoned and a more robust codebase was used.

 

Having said that, I know that they've had hardware issues in the past too and it's difficult to guess what he problem is this time as I really have no idea as to the set up.

That's much easier said than done I'm afraid.

 

The NBF has developed into a completely bespoke piece of software with a large proportion of specialist facilities not available in off the peg PHP Forum software, which 99% of other forums run on.

 

Richard's familiarity with Coldfusion would take many months if not years to replicate with a more up to date webs server language. It would be like someone totally fluent in Swedish suddenly having to learn Hindi.

 

Coldfusion in itself is quite robust. The big problem that the NBF faces is that commercial hosting for coldfusion is far less competitive than PHP, ASP and CGI, so he hosts the website directly, via a synchronous broadband digital line, much more expensive than remote hosting, and the hardware is local, rather than a data centre's much duplicated racked facilities.

When forums started over ten years ago, the options were very limited, with most being hard coded in various languages.

 

That gave the ultimate flexibility, enabling almost any logical features to be incorporated.

 

Nowadays though, the demand for ready-made forum software is huge, so the off the peg solutions have evolved into very slick and professional interfaces, perfectly suited to purpose.

 

The only slight drawback is that any completely non standard features still have to be hard coded, though the add ons are gradually covering most needs.

 

The stability of commonly used forum software solutions is more bug free than individual bespoke solutions, and usability for the Punters is better, because most forums they visit look and feel in exactly the same way.

 

Spamming and Hacking them can be more of a problem though, because the code is open source, whereas the bespoke solutions have unpublished code.

 

Almost ayone can start up a forum these days, at practically no cost. The real trick is in how it's managed, to attract maximum interest in reading and posting, especially when in competition with similar sites.

 

 

The new NBN interface is a good example of the best off the peg currently available.

I can't comment on what their penetration testing is like, but IP Board is most definitely not open source.

One-off coding is still potentially more secure though, because potential Hackers can't even experiment with setting up a commercially available program.

 

The way it works is much more of a closed book to anyone except the author.
