Hi Andy,

Generally the river water should not smell unless it has sat in the inlet pipe for a prolonged period,(weeks).

Unless there is a problem with the seals the toilets should not really smell too bad although the Mansfield type (drop through) will gradually get less pleasant during the holiday as you will see it filling up!

the pump handle types generally have a remote tank so any smells would be down to the handle not being pumped enough using water.

 

The only tips I can offer are use land based toilets as much as possible.

line the bowl with paper before you get comfy! (not too much)

flush the toilet with the shower (if you are lazy!)
