Cigarette Lighter Plug

Hi all,

I'm a bit confused by these. I can't figure out what's positive and what's negative!

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Although back in the pre 60's there were some "Positive Earth" cars, I've never seen a car cigar lighter socket wired any other way than tip positive, and sleeve negative.

 

Likewise, the overwhelming majority of small coaxial power plugs (as used on computers etc., are tip positive, sleeve negative as well.

 

As you say, it's logical, because the positive is them more enclosed on the female sockets.

The ones I got from Maplin - have a red LED in the the side but also importantly have a fuse.  If this does not and your using sensitive things worth considering.

I agree with Robin, always use a fused cigar lighter plug.  It uses a 11/4 inch fuse (32mm) and I would normally use a 5 amp fuse.
