I know it's a bit early to mention the dreaded "C" word although it has been mentioned on another thread, I won't say by who will I Hylander  :naughty: but have any of you guys got any plans to spend Christmas afloat, something we do intend doing in the very distant future maybe when it's just the two of us.

 

Would love to know if anyone has and how you got on, how did you manage Christmas dinner, is there anywhere open and did you nearly freeze to death? that type of thing, also do any of the Yards hire over Christmas?

 

Don't mean to rub it in too much but I have started my Christmas shopping, even though it's only a tin of sweets, I'm quite proud of myself Lol

Oh Gracie you a breath of fresh air!!         Oh dear just read the posts above,  they were not there before...

 

We have not spent Christmas on the boat as quite frankly I think I would have to trail another boat behind for all of the stuff I buy.   I am always told off about a week before Christmas and yes still heading for the food shops, about our cupboards bursting at the seams.   There is only two of us but you never know 'we might be snowed in for a month' , someone ( God only knows who in the family ) , might visit.       I just love Christmas and I think 99% of the enjoyment is before Chrsitmas Day and all of the anticipation.

 

If you hired a boat with all the mod cons and the best heating,  yes I dont see why it would not work at all.

 

I am sure others on here have done just that.

Well, I can't do it this year, nor, I suspect, next... but a boating holiday around the end of December in 2016 may well be on the cards.

Hey... A Forum Chr....End of year party might be fun!

Dave, I totally agree with you, I went into a local shop the other day and they were selling Christmas Decorations, already seen adverts for toys and perfume on the TV, it's far too early, Iain has joked about Easter Eggs but he is so right, they will be in the shops as soon as the Christmas stuff is out of the way.

 

Nothing to do with it really but I absolutely hate those perfume ads  :norty:

 

We are not religious and would never knock anyone who is but like you Christmas for us is about our family, eating too much and having a nice drink.

 

What really gets to me is the endless adverts for expensive toys, our boys are lucky in that we can usually give them what they want (within reason) but there are so many families that can't do the same, it must break peoples hearts when their kids see these ads knowing they don't have a chance in hell of affording it.

Know one loves Christmas more than me, even more so as you get on a bit. As for toys, I had one for more years than I care to remember, and knew in those days it was a dear present, what was it ...a Meccanno Number 5 set. 

 

Grace, you have covered nearlly all the things that IMHO are wrong so has Dave and MM in his very clever worded way.

 

For me, my highlight was singing in the church choir over the Christmas period. To see all the kiddies faces, was a joy to behold. That folks, is the real Christmas to me. Not commercialisation grrrrrrr! Right feel better for typing that, now wheres my Easter Bunny? :naughty:

We are on moonlight shadow 20/27th! Im a vegetarian but the others eat dead things so there may be a roast bird of some sort and lots of roast veggies. Oven roasted chestnuts for a nightime nibble and lots of nice cheese! Plans to add a bit of sparkle to the boat so we feel christmassy. Pressies will be small and packable! I have this down to a fine art as we have spent the last few years in egypt at Christmas If it doesn't fit in the suitcase you aint having it !

We will be armed with onesies, fan heaters and hot water bottles! Looking forward to getting away from it all and hoping for some nice crisp mornings on the broads. Looking forward to being able to moor up anywhere we fancy. We hate all the over priced pressies, unwelcome annoying relatives who only show up once a year and always uninvited!

Hi Gracie, 

 

We looked into hiring a boat for over Christmas a few years ago and found at that time, only a couple of yards did hire, but the prices were too high for us. it is still one of the things we plan to do. We were told that we should be able to get water at most of the big yards(weather dependant) if we needed to top up.

Not been out at Christmas but we were out in November last year. It's the most relaxed I've been for years! Probably due to it getting dark early...and being chilly as there's no heating on the boat, and I was in bed by 7:30 pm and loath to get out of it until daylight. As a measure of how cold it was...I usually have a nocturnal tussle with Dylan my beagle who sleeps in the crook of my knees until he gets too hot then he will climb out of the duvet onto the floor dragging the duvet with him. In November he got into bed, stayed in bed and did not move all night.

 

One problem we found was the lack of anywhere to buy tokens for electricity posts in winter. We had convection heaters and relevant shore leads but could not find anywhere that would sell us tokens in winter.

 

I have to say though I never felt cold, and even on some very chilly days we were cruising around with the canopy down even if we were nursing mugs of hot chocolate.

I’ve just spotted a Tweet by Faircraft Loynes confirming that they do have a selection of boats available over Christmas but I would imagine that you would have to dig fairly deep into your pockets. Problem is of course that they would have to provide breakdown cover over the festive period and I don’t suppose that comes cheap.

 

Royall’s used to do Christmas cruising for some of their regular customers until fairly recently but I think it was quite bad weather one year and they decided to stop it. xmas2

Thanks for that Howard, we won't be hiring at Christmas for a few years yet but good to know.

 

I should have been more specific about places being open over the holiday period, I mean't river side pubs and restaurants, we love most of them but favourites for Christmas dinner would have to be The Sutton Staithe Hotel or Bridge Inn at Acle, or beans on toast on the boat lol

 

The latest we have hired is very late October and loved it, battening down the hatches with the heating on and a good glass of red ( in Howard's case beer or would that be lager :naughty: ) bliss.
