Brightwork A Guide to Varnishing

Recommended Posts

Tim,

I think your wire wool needs sharpening. This is a specialist's job that harks back to the days before the throw away society we now live in.

Now the good news. Although it's been many years since I last did it, you are in the company of a fully apprenticed hack saw blade re-toother and wire wool sharpener. Send me your wire wool and for only £25 per metric oz, I'll have it as sharp as the day you sent it to me.

Have my resharpened wire wool delivered post haste to my château in the Norfolk Alps addressed to Sticky Tim Plinge and mind the wet varnish....and Ta!

While we're on metalwork anyone know how to clean up Aluminium, on the new beastie the pullpit and windows are all aluminium, they are in quite good condition and just really need a clean, but the previous owners have used mastic everywhere, I've managed to clean most of it of as they masticed over dirt so it didn't stick to well, but there are bit where it's left a skin, I know they do a mastic remover but the one I looked at said not to use on Ali, I thought of wire wool and scotchbright pads but I'm worried these will take the anodising off or scratct the Ali, Anyone got any ideas????

Arm and Hammer Toothpaste and a microfibre cloth...will not only clean but will polish up your aluminium!

just remember that an anodised surface is usually just a few microns in thickness, I used to work in aluminium double glazing years back and for industrial purposes the anodising was generally only about 20 microns thick, most is even less. generally getting the right solvent should work as the anodised surface is quite resistant to most things other than abrasion. toothpaste is gentle enough though.

The price my dentist charges it would be cheaper to replace the Pullpit rails, so i'll give the toothpaste a try, and I've just found a thing on You/Tube about using baking soda, I'm actually more concerned about getting all the silicone off, I have a plan C as well, I was just treating all the wood with Timber preserver and on the can it warns that it disolves silicone sealant so I may try it in an out of the way place where it won't be seen if it kills the Ali, the annoying thing is they have sealed around every window/glass and fitting on the boat, and the leak was coming from four bolts on the roof grabrails and two bolts on the pullpit, I re-tighten them and sealed over them with Tek7 after I cleaned off every bit of silicone I could and no more leaks,

Romane, Scots Annie, hard working girls, so I'm told, back in the sixties when ten bob used to pay for a good night out! 2/6p to see the Rolling Stones, 2/6p for a cod & chips, 1/2p for a pint, yes, it was possible to go home with change, or a . . . . . . . . . .

Peter! just a little update on the Withams Varnish, took the new roof panels home to varnish them, three straight coats on new ply! no thinning and I now have to say the Varnish is as good! in fact better than most of the varnishes I've ever used the only one that came close is  Le Tonkinois, but it's £21  a litre and needed six coats to get the same results, Withams was £22 for 2.1/2 litres, It seems like it's a hard varnish as I knocked it a couple of times and it never scratched, I know what one I'll be using from now on,, it's a shame you can only pick it up from Withams as I'd think they could do a good trade on the Broads,,
