JennyMorgan
Tut tut, Martin, 'tis a history section! Some good stuff over the years. By the way, I mentioned the Oulton Broad Ice House, it's the large building on the left of the above photo. When it was finally demolished. it was a wall in Newson's boatyard, it took a lot of effort being several feet thick.
JennyMorgan
Back in time my father had restaurant in Lowestoft that was bombed during WWII. Reparations didn't cover the cost of rebuilding but they were enough to buy a premises in Oulton Broad, an area that my father loved dearly. The premises stayed in the family until the 1970's when my mother & brother out-voted me and it was sold, regretfully. My memory of the place went back to the hundred or so boat orders that we churned out every Friday night, there were once fifteen and more boatyards around the Broad. These myself and a driver called William delivered on Saturday mornings so I got to know the yards well and the boats that they hired. William was a great character to work with, used to regale me with tales of his time in the WWI trenches where he was gassed and eventually repatriated home to Oulton Broad.
JennyMorgan
Another memory I have is the 1953 flood when the embankment behind the shop was washed away:
LizG
This picture of Mutford Lock and the old Wherry has just been posted on a Facebook Group. Oulton Broad and Village history. Not sure if every one will be able to view it but I had to look twice to realise where it was. Maybe JM has a copy he can post? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153224508755863&set=gm.547785185380719&type=3&theater

C.Ricko
Peter, Did you know my old man then? Things must have changed in 1958 when he moved his 35 boats north? I have heard him talk about your father..
JennyMorgan
Hi Clive, I knew him but I doubt that he knew me! I was just a young whippersnapper hanging around the boatyards, scrounging empty bottles and being inquisitive.

Hylander
I just loved the silent film at the top. Not a life jacket in sight, the men wearing ties to go sailing. Watching that lady get off of the boat and leaping to the shore, (rather her than me) and in a skirt. How times have changed. Thank you. Thoroughly enjoyable. JennyMorgan
Paul, I am still partial to an empty bottle! Trouble is no one returns the deposits nowadays.
C.Ricko
Dad has a great memory (for things 50 years ago!) so he probably would remember you... I took him to Trumans yard a few years ago when they were giving away the old Crane they had, (i should have taken it, it was the one from Albatross Marine) he was amazed that 'little Nicky Truman' was not wearing shorts as he was only a youngster when he last saw him.. ! he would go round the yards collecting the pin badges! We also tracked down Arthur Wigg who he had not seen for probably 40 years, he went round and banged on his kitchen window, poor fella was basically blind but he recognised dad straight away from his voice, funny old conversation.. bang bang bang... Who is it? its me! Bobby, what you doing here?! come in, I can't see, you got someone with you?
JennyMorgan
Clive, re those Albatross cranes, several folk who owned an Albatross had a crane at the end of their gardens, presumably built by Albatross. Harry Last at Coldham, old man Archer at Reedham, the Trumans at Oulton Broad, Barry Johnson at St Olaves and probably a few others too. Whether as beefy as Truman's yard crane I don't know but having a crane & Albatross at the end of one's garden was very much in vogue back then! Your Dad might remember me, I was still in my pram though, a green clincher built one. Re Richardson's leaving the Broad, wasn't long before Colin's moved in and most of the yards were building back then. Thirty five went, probably wasn't long before fifty took their place.
JennyMorgan
Going back to the Wherry, found this one in amongst some junk belonging to my father, bit older than usual:
JennyMorgan
Very recent history, Oulton Broad from above, the first probably within the last five years and one within ten years at a guess.

AdnamsGirl
I was searching for some info I knew was on this thread and have discovered that I can sadly no longer see the photos linked to by Peter from his Photobucket account. Just a message that Photobucket accounts need updating to allow third party hosting. Are you able to fix it Peter and bring your wonderful photos and postcards back to this and other threads in this section ... pretty please Carol
charlesa
Carol it's incredibly irritating bur Photobucket have pulled the plug on free hosting of third party photos so the same thing has happened on countless forums. I think that they are now demanding a large sum host. I'm not an IT specialist ( and that is an understatement !) so I am not sure what the solution is other than the poster of the photo to use a different conduit. Best wishes Charles
