all you would really need is something like a foot square of metal (biscuit tin lid?) inside the coach roof to improve the signal, just pinched between the new nut and the coach roof like a giant penny washer, you might even get away with a foil backing inside the roof.

The silver toothed washer as you called it, is called a shakeproof washer and does just that stops the nut shaking loose.

As Grendel says piece of thin metal as a ground plane should give you the extra wattage to pick up signals. But refit the Shakeproof washer as it increases the bite into the metal to allow conductivity. Theres me going off on one like a real radio ham.

Ah yes - but it is definitely not a shakeproof washer - I know what they are / look like.  This one only had about 6 teeth in total all the way round and each tooth was very sharp and about 5mm in from base to top  The biscuit tin metal is a good idea and yes of course I will fit a shakeproof washer between nut and metal for the conductivity to make good.

Actually had a rare day off today but will pay it back by working Saturday - again, we attended a funeral.  Which meant I had time late afternoon to do a bit of running around catching up, it also meant I had time on the new mast too.

So after applying 5 x coats of Ravilakk reducing the amount of turps percentage every coat,  I de-nibbed for the last time, herewith prior to the hoovering off and white spirit wipe down

you are making me regret booking boats and using all my holiday up before the year had really started Griff, I dont think I will be able to join you this year, (I also have some other urgent tasks that need doing which I will tell you about when I see you next).

More boat surgery porn coming soon to a boat near you. That looks like a few more planks than you had identified earlier when you wattsapp video called lying on your back under that beautiful craft mate? Hope it’s not too many and you have enough Iroko or teak to fix said soft bits. I’m sure you and Robin had an horrible but well worth it time with your hammers earlier. Ave a great time 

 

I think we will just miss you as we arrive weds am for our look see and shakedown after all our travails.

The prop is perfect, just needs a clean as does the rest of the fittings. No sign of electrolysis anywhere. The sacrificial anode is up to staying on for another 2 x years.

The cutlass bearings are fine as is the rudder pin and bronze bearing washers

There is some minor damage to the Skeg probably caused something round the prop at some stage  this will have to be repaired this week

‘B.A’ has a galvanic isolator fitted so I would be disappointed to see any electrolysis

if you take the time out to measure up and get a good dimensional drawing of the skeg now, you could get a new one made up in the interim for the next AMP in two years.(or whenever a new one is needed) do it in stainless and it will last another 100 years..

So.. It has been time for Broad Ambition to have her big bi-annual work done, this time st Sutton Staithe Boatyard. 

Ive got some video to share of her coming out the water but thought today would be good to share the work Charlie and i have been doing getting the rotten areas of wood out. 

It could be a great deal worse and is concentrated at the aft area under the Galley and in close proximity to the prop turbulence. The forward part of the hull is in very good condition. Remember too this is the original 50 year old Teak that went in which has finally begun to deteriorate. Since we replace any wood with Teak it should be as good.

Stainless Steel Skeg - It has already been discussed.  However the present one just needs a good clean / rub down and one small area to repair then anti foul.  We did sandblast it during the restoration in about 03/04.  I won't be doing that again but sometime down the river - Yes we will have a s/stainless steel one made up
