windows 10 or not to windows 10

Linux Mint is a good operating system Steve.

I have it on my old laptop and it provides all the office and other day to day needs.      There is a lot of other free software available for Linux as well.

My old dell laptop has a 3G wireless card installed.

I had to modify the dell installer to get this to function under windows as according to Dell it was not compatible with my machine.

Linux detected the card straight away and it worked with no problems.

I decided to update my old computer running windows 7 to windows 10 just to have a look at it before making a final decision on which O/S to go for.

After running all evening then all night it came back with an error message "Code C1900104 installation failed".

Anyone else have this problem?

I did a fair amount of Googling looking for an answer but most of it was too Geeky to be true

One suggestion which made me smile was “just stick with windows 7 till you get a new computer with windows 10 ready loaded”.

Probably  the best  suggestion so far

Done the searches and not a lot of hope out there, I had a error when I did my server which I couldn't fix then I remembered when I 1st go the microserver I had to select the Op system i.e. win 7 or Win 8 and when I swapped to Win 8 and did the update it went on with no issues.

So try the web site of the laptop 1st for bios or other updates which may help you out.

When will Microsoft realise that you don't need to turn the world upside down in order to release a new Operating System?  My experience with the later versions of their products is that you can usually find the useful and helpful features that you loved in Windows XP/Office 2007 but they are usually a da*ned sight harder to find than they were and don't always work as well as they did.  For an individual upgrading is often time-consuming and inconvenient, but if you consider the implications in confusion and lost time on a commercial organisation with, say 15000 users, not all of whom will be computer-savvy, the mind boggles.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I agree with you Ray. I have been very happy with Vista, but it must be going out of support soon, if it hasn't already. For me, rather than upgrade to a bloated W8 or W10, which will probably mean buying a new laptop, I will simply move to Linux , which I have just installed on a 10 year old machine and hasn't disappointed. Very intuitive to use, secure,  easy to install and free. What's not to like?

cheers

Here I go again another problem.   On my Lumia 640 XL one of the tiles is Onenote.    I pop all manner of things in there and when I installed Windows 10 on my laptop , low and behold it had very kindly synced the contents across to the Onenote on the laptop.   Then this thing in all its wisdom did an update and now I have a tile called Onenote but it resembles absolutely nowt to the one I had before and I have lost all of the content that was there before.  Luckily I still have the Onenote on my Microsoft phone.

Any clues please?    How do I get it back as it was before the update.

Linux all the way for me. I use Windows 7 at work and do a lot with Server 2012 (Windows 10 for servers), but Linux is a far more flexible and cost-effective solution for my personal use.

I'd love to give Windows the elbow, and the Linux GUIs are now as good as any OS, but so much of my "essential" software is simply not compatible with Linux.

I can't replace the full functionality of Adobe products like Photoshop and Lightroom, and so many small specialist hardware related programs are often only written for Windows or Apple.

I unwisely rebooted my laptop yesterday, it then went into the uploading updates routine. 6 hours later I had to reboot it again as it had frozen, it then did a major upgrade, taking another age, after the initial reboot at 8am, it finally finished at 10pm, and then required a further reboot to get it working properly, mind you that is pretty much the norm for a microsoft update.
