New Year challenge - famous boatyards and their boats

With the recent discussion regarding famous old boat yards in particular in the Thorpe area to name one riverside location, I was wondering............

I can say with first hand knowledge that at least one Herbert Woods wooden vintage boat still survives - mine being built in 1933 and of course I know of several more cruisers and off course yachts but what about the other boatyards that actually built their boats? How many of these have survived - I know that Craig's amazing website would provide the simple answer http://norfolk.broads.org.uk/wiki/index.php5?title=Main_Page but with so much knowledge on this forum what little gems are still floating from that bygone era.  Then off course we have the post war yards who also had their famous wooden fleets of cruisers and yachts.

Even this website has some hidden gems although I can confirm that two of the three Delights in a matter of a few years have been lost since I found this page http://irishwaterwayshistory.com/about/irish-inland-waterways-vessels/wooden-boats-on-irish-inland-waterways/

So first we need a list of the yards and then what still survives - so for starters I give two yards

p.s Oops, just re-read your post Liz, did or do Marthams build their own Boats?

Bit of a clue in the name, Martham Boat Building Company, built most of their current fleet still on hire in my opinion, certainly the Janets and Judiths cruisers and all the famous Japonicas.

Aha! Found some piccys.... brace yourselves!

Years of neglect had not been kind to her and shortly after we found her this happened

Every wooden boat owners nightmare I'm sure you will agree. She had got caught up during a gale and the following high tide had done for her.

We were very lucky. We set up pumps, caught the tide and she came up like a cork! 

A few months later and we took over ownership, made some frames inside to help the old girl hold together and very carefully lifted her out and onto a lorry. She is now awaiting restoration and is realistically way to far gone to be even considered as viable but we will give her our best shot.

Falling Leaves or Emerald (both Newson Boats) or Lady Miranda (Coral Craft).

I cannot help you there JA my knowledge of south river boats is rather limited, but

Windboats to start with. Lady Christina pictured as she was when in the W.O'Heft fleet

now sporting a fixed wheel house, Nocturn in restoration but hopefully afloat later this year.

Goodwind another 40' Graham Bunn boat awaiting restoration, this was Bunn's own boat so never in the fleet. All the above are built of mainlly Burmese teak and of 1920's / 1930's vintage.

Of a later vintage September Tide awaiting restoration 1950's 39' 6" Mahogany Broads cruiser. These are all in the Little Ships fleet  http://www.littleships.co.uk/

Bubble Gap 39' 6" always been private There are other big Finewind / Fairwind on the Broads but they are losing the fight as they were built from Mahogany, and we all know what that is like in fresh water.

smaller  Merrywind Ardshona Muddy Waters, Pour Toi. All around 32'. I believe Adastra is still afloat somewhere on the Broads Springsong lost in a fire in 1991 /  2 and Cassandra off the Broads around 2010 or so possibly to the Thames,

 

There are I am sure others around but I cannot think of them at the moment.

The chap who owned in the 1980's became fed up with her wood

hull, so being a steel fabricator he made a new hull out of steel, so

as far as I am aware she has a steel hull, and if you compare the two

you can see the difference.

Before I actually bought "Glenmore" I very very nearly bought a very handsome woody called "Mr Toad". I think the builders were Chumley & Hawkes but I'm not certain. Sadly I can't find the boat on Craigs site. I do know that when last sold in around 2007/8 the boat left the Broads.

The one I would to know about is the Empress built by C & G Press. My parents and brothers went on several holidays in the early 1950s and I know she was in the hire fleets until at least the late 1970s if not later.  Any clues to when her demise happened as I assume it did?
