ExMemberBobdog
No, I mean really, nothing to do with rainfall or atmospheric pressure or any of that ... the dyke has sprung a leak, and is flooding the fields around (which are below the water level in the dyke and mere). ExMemberBobdog
Apparently there's a culvert that runs underneath the dyke, so that the pump that drains the fields/marshes into the dyke and mere can suck water from fields on both sides of the dyke. The culvert has collapsed, and the dyke and mere are now flooding out into the fields.

JawsOrca
Oh ****. That sounds potentially very serious. Can they plug it? Have we got any pictures?
ExMemberBobdog
I'm going to head out there tomorrow for a look, and I'll take the camera this time. All kinds of bodies were working on it yesterday; Environment Agency, BA, Buxton Estate folk (i.e. the landowner) etc.

Broadsword
Noooo! One of our favourite places to moor up! I do hope they can sort it out quickly... Keep us informed - and pictures if possible!
Broadsword
How is it affecting the Mere itself?

Arthur
Let's hope they do not see this as an opportunity to remove all the piling in the dyke and promote reed growth like the proposed ideas at upton. Seriously though this could be a real disaster. Hope it can be sorted quickly

ExMemberBobdog
Been up there, but couldn't get close enough for a decent picture - they've fenced off the footpath on both sides of the dyke with notices warning of danger due to flooding. Matters seem to be under control - there are three JCB type things digging away in the fields, and some kind of boom/pipe arrangement suspended from ropes across the dyke. The pumping station is working overtime.
