Does anyone CiC on the east coast

Not wanting to open old wounds or start another world war.

I own a sea going boat and enjoy the peace and tranquility of as much time as possible spent on both the North and South broads waterways.

I would like to occasionally venture out into the salty bit.  As a responsible RYA Day Skipper, I know this is best done in company both for Security and the Companionship.

I know that NYA have their own CIC, but am interested to know if there are other groups that venture out.

I do hope this question is not taken as a slur on a broads forum

Bill, Lowestoft Cruising Club might be the one for you. I believe that the Brundall Motor Boat Club also organise the occasional jolly on the briny. Last time members of one of the Broads forums organised a trip to sea all hell broke loose with letters from a moderator being published in Anglia Afloat so I can quite understand your desire to avoid a World War! In the meantime, as John has asked, what sort of boat do you have? If you happen to have a Drascombe I'd be glad to accompany you out to sea and maybe along the coast to Southwold, it probably being better if a C in C was for similar style boats.

Bill,

If you find anyone organising these then please let me know.

I know a few people who might be interested as well.

The NYA trips are very well organised, but getting harder to get onto with so many people wanting to join them.

I am sure there are a few other boats in Brundall who do CiCs, but just need to get in with them or find out who they are.

The Hardy should keep up with most of the cruises as Im guessing she is good for a few knots?

I was searching for cruising clubs a few weeks ago and most seemed to be aimed at sailing rather than motor cruising.

Baitrunner,

I will surely keep you informed. Verdi B has 200hp lump so should keep up with the straglers!

What craft do you have?

As you say most of the salty cruising seems to be R&S.

Sounds like this could be an opportunity if enough interest.

We do have an offshore section to this forum (http://www.thenorfolkbroads.net/forum/forum/24-the-offshore-area/).  If you chaps would like to organise CIC's in there I'm sure no one would mind.   I'm sure we can do a new subforum etc. ;) (I'm not quite up for taking Orca out but maybe if/when we get a twin engine boat I'll be up for some trips).

(I'm with a yacht club here in the medway and they are worth looking into as they offer lots of chances for CIC or even crewing. Also for people new to coastal cruising it can be a brilliant way to learn these skills. Some clubs do have a motor boat sections, not sure of any local to the broads though but worth a google).

Hi Bill,

We had a Regal 2655 with a single 180Hp that was quite nippy. Got a Sealine S38 now with a pair of 285HP (when they both work).

Alan's idea sounds good (I have heard he has a good one now and again). We would be just as happy with a slow cruise somewhere as we are with a fast one to be honest. Nice to have a whizz, but the company is just as important. Even better if someone is a competent engineer or has a good tow rope!!!

Many years ago this very forum had the Salty bottoms, I know I was there. we put together I think 3 beginner tasters to get those that hadn't been through the pier heads used to the sea.  All very informal and own risk type of thing.

I think they were really good days and lead to many gaining the confidence to go off further afield maybe a couple of the more experienced Sea goers would consider the same?

I was involved in the ill fated C in C of a couple of years ago, a lot of hard work and organisation went into this by Griff. For whatever reason it didn't happen, but in my own opinion, ONE of the reasons it didn't happen was because it was too big (20 + boats) and that's an awful lot of locking in and out for lock keepers.

Still itching for a salty bottom, happy to join anyone thinking of doing this this season, but honestly think half a dozen boats is a sensible size flotilla.

Ian (Senator) sounded like a good gig?

I agree with Last draft having been on a couple of NYA cruises with 13/14 boats in a row stemming the tide at GY for a bridge lift it is heart pounding at times!! They have plenty of team members to handle all the mooring bits as well, but for a bunch of amateurs (no disrespect to anyone) I think a smaller flotilla would work better.

Sounds like we are getting a few punters on board for this?

We got everyone together at RNSYC, took all the time pressure off, anyone who had not been off the broads followed those that had through Mutford and Lake Loathing.

Wasn't designed as a cruising club more a familiarisation with the Salty stuff, Saturday night was a blast about and Sunday was supposed to be Southwold run, although I think the weather played a part in that.

For anyone looking to do the same they were fun weekends, no problem with about 8 boats and at the end of it you have your own CIC club.

Would love to help but we are off to Ipswich so not about to sort it out.

Oh the good old days when the lock worked!!:hardhat:

Might be nice to do a passage through GY and down to Lowestoft as an initiation? Even a crack down to Southwold as it's a nice short run. My first time and second time through both was an experience I hadn't expected. Easy once you know what to do and expect.

Lets make sure we avoid the dates James takes the NYA cruises out though!!!

Baitrunner,

I seems that Lastdraft could also be interested in joining our motley crew and Griff is always up for a laugh.

We could be close to having a quorum.

By the way us "Northeners" area a 'Hardy' lot - pun intended !!

If my memory serves me correctly when we did it the sea was a bit lumpy. We did get everyone out but being at RNSYC played a big part in that.

If you go out at Yarmouth then once through Haven bridge there is no turning back, if the sea isn't as expected you are either going or stringing yourself up on Town quay. At least from Lowestoft there are a couple of nice safe marinas to run back to. For the more experienced then GY to Lowestoft is hardly one to write home about, just maybe a more convenient method of getting to RNSYC.

There was another forum that did very much the same a couple of years ago, I believe after pilfering the name, apparently they had a fantastic guest speaker for the after dinner speech.

I'd certain echo that of Charlie and B.A in being involved in something.

I think in the past you've had a really good bunch of passionate people who wanted to do such but who were perhaps naive in thinking that others in the world are equally good and non-judgmental. Things were certainly left very bitter and certain people showed their true characters which turned out to be anything but nice – but hey that was then and life moves on.

Because we cannot predict the future – and even when best laid plans are made, I am all too aware of outside influences causing them to all change at the last minute so to help mitigate this (and this is just my opinion to chuck something in the bucket) something like:

  • A smaller group of boat owners who are comfortable with their knowledge of the sea or have a crewman/woman who is with them who is. Are happy with their skill and knowledge of their boat. Guidance and mutual planning is welcome, but so no single person be seen as a ‘leader’ to baby people or be a person to follow and potentially lay blame at.
  • To avoid issues with locking in or out at, any form of dispute as to its use or numbers or boats and events taking place not to leave or depart from Lowestoft but do so from Yarmouth – just need to deal with a bridge or two and tides. With weather permitting be a longer cruise to Southwold – over night and social get together and return the following day.
  • To be a time where it is just the pure enjoyment of boating and socialising with like minded individuals and politics is left firmly at the quay.

Then I recon – on a lovely warm, summer day (I am told this has been known) with calm waters would be a jolly good thing – I might even get some of my old gear out and let the land based people watch from their armchairs.

Re a forum C in C and Mutford Lock, the person concerned has moved on. I really don't think that there would be a repeat of the previous furor. Just arrange it with Paul, ace bloke, rather than one of his minions.

No single person seen as the leader etc.........

Still needs someone to step up to the plate though Robin if this is to happen ? To collate, names, dates, tides, bridge lifts, locking in etc

Someone with experience of this trip, who's initials are LR ?

Good points all round. Glad I have no idea what happened in a previous life and sounds like it would be good to forget it to be honest?

I agree there has to be a "co-ordinator", but to Robins first point there shouldn't be a  "leader" who calls all the shots. Mind you we will need someone to organise the rabble.

There has to be ownership from each skipper as their level of skill and experience and down to them to ask for help/advice.

I'd be more than happy to join up, help out as needed and draw lots for who goes first, second etc.
