  1. Hi there Mandy, there are also a few broads authority moorings on the right just before you get to Loddon, think its called Chedgrave common, we've moored there before & enjoyed the short walk into Loddon. We haven't tried Pyes Mill moorings yet as I wasn't sure if they were private moorings or not, maybe we'll try next time.

  2. Hi there, Yes , the Chet is definitely worth a trip up, the first few hundred yards are very narrow & winding but you should be able to see ,any boats coming from way off with the higher steering position,  Its lovely & peaceful there, with plenty of trees & birds, and one or two spots for a bit of wild mooring! we didn't fancy mooring at the basin both times we went there, so moored at chedgrave common (think that's what its called) and walked into Loddon, its a lovely friendly village with a few shops & a tea room,

Hope you have a great time... ice slice  ice slice

  3. Hi there Alan, Yes it was Maffets, I tried to take a look at the boatyard last year when we visited Loddon but don't think it was open, I wanted a sneak peek at any boats there..Ill try again this year, mind you ive seen so many good reports about them  on here  that I might just go for it, I like the look of 'merlin',  I just have to persuade John now!!

  4. Hi there, im also from the NBF, under the name of cas, I find it easier to use this website & everyones very friendly here too, & lots of good information. Also my pc wont let me post on NBF but this one will, & also I can read posts on here using my phone too....  Good to see lots of familiar names on here too!!

  5. We've only hired bathtubs so far, mainly for the fact theyre practical for our use, but I do find the steering a bit hit & miss when youre happily cruising around bends in the river & suddenly realise the stern is about to whack into an oncoming boat!! We've had a couple where the saloon is lovely and roomy, and has a separate fixed dining table you don't have to put away after every meal, (pearl horizon, & Ruby gem) and I love the large windows, great for sitting in & watching the river life/sunsets etc, we still haven't found one though with a decent sized bed where one of us isn't either half under the bulkhead, or has to climb over the other to get out in the night. Think I judge them a lot on how well I sleep too & think Ruby gem so far has been my favourite,(we pulled out the saloon berth & kept it as a large sofa/daybed) I know its hard to find the 'perfect' boat though- we just accept that it wont tick all the boxes!!! Saying that, we're hiring Glistening Horizon in a few weeks so will be good to see what that's like (hope the steering is easier though!)

  6. Hi there, We haven't even had our holiday on the broads yet this year (only got 7 weeks to go though) but im already thinking about next year & wether we should try for an earlier break in the year , when the days are longer, and try another boatyard - have had a look at a small yard in Loddon & like the look of the older wooden boats.

  7. Thanks for that Jill, wow that took me back and to think it only cost around  £8 per person per week!!  Think we had that boat in 1966 too,  I used to love looking through the brochures every year looking at all the boats, & I seem to remember there were loads of sailing boats for hire in those days too.

  8. Thanks Alan for the link to the website, Had a look at princess of hearts & think it was the one, shame shes not around now though, im not sure where we hired from although we did spend a lot of time on the southern rivers so probably was from Thorpe.  I also recognised the  sea huntress but cant remember where that was from, ill have to quiz my parents about that!! cheers

  9.  Hi there, thanks for checking with the yacht station, I guess if we miss the tide & cant get under the bridge we'll have to use the yacht station, I don't mind paying the £4.10 though if were going to have a look around the town.

We'll still try the lido though...  I too didn't see the 'advertising' in the photo, until someone pointed it out!!!

Must admit I look at any broads website or forum that feeds my 'broads bug' too!!!

  10. Thanks everyone,   I forgot to say too that I also had several holidays on the broads  when I was a nipper, the whole family would come along & we'd have a great time & I have some lovely memories so that's probably where I first caught the broads bug!!!!

When I was aboard as a child in the 1960's I remember we hired a lovely wooden boat called the 'princess of hearts' & she looked  very stately with all the gleaming wood & brass fittings,- don't think she's on the water any more though.. A few years later we hired a boat called sea huntress & I can remember having a go steering which I thought was fun ( I was only about 7)    As a teenager we also hired a Hampton safari type boat which we only had for a week but we seemed to go everywhere , I remember picking her up at Loddon & heading across breydon which felt like an adventure, think we went right up to wroxham & back in that week!

We returned back to the broads 5 years ago & twice hired from a large boatyard in Stalham, weve had 'ruby gem' and 'san salvador' which we had a great time on & would recommend the yard as the staff were very friendly & helpful. We've also had 'spring horizon' and 'pearl horizon' from Acle,, & also found the yard very friendly & helpful. we've found the bathtub type boat very easy to handle (apart from the  stern swinging out when you steer) & like the layout but this year we're going to try something  different & are going for 'glistening horizon'!

  11. Hi there everyone, Does anybody know if there are any free  'short stay' moorings in beccles apart from the yacht station? I thought

id read somewhere you could moor at the  lido just past the old road bridge,       Were coming to the broads for two weeks  in the autumn

& am hoping to call in there on route to Geldeston, but don't fancy paying the £7.50 at the yacht station for just  a couple of hours while we get shopping!

I know there were once B.A. moorings just before the new road bridge but think theyre now for taller boats that can't get under the bridge!

We actually moored there last year in October as we saw the 'BA mooring' sign without realising we'd made a mistake, & whilst we

were getting our shopping had a phone call from our boatyard saying someone had complained  & we were moored where we shouldn't, so we rushed back, there wasn't anyone else there, but we  noticed there was a smallish sign on the top of the usual 'free BA 24 hour moorings etc... saying it was for large boats that cant  get under the bridge..... Don't want to make that mistake again!!

    Many thanks, Carole
