Where were the pigeons and whippets then? To be pedantic a house flag, such as the white rose, should correctly and proudly be flown from the, if I've got it right, port spreader or yard arm.

    I don't have either :-)

  2. I fly the White Rose with much pride as you can see in the pic. Complete with flat cap. The only thing missing from that shot is my Jack Russell. I was moored at Wayford and removed it as it was in the way of my fishing rod. An angler on the opposite bank shouted across "tha carnt tek that darn lad"

I telephoned the Broads Authority regarding the anglers and the disappearance of the "No Fishing" signs towards the end of August. After much confusion and information found at their end, the gentleman knew nothing about these signs, and simply read from some form of document stating that fishing wasn't allowed within so many yards of the bridge, in order not to hinder boats travelling through. I cannot remember the exact length, but it wasn't the length of the mooring. When I tried to insist that there had been notices there earlier, and I had seen them enforced by BA, he just read the usual blurb on BA moorings regarding anglers giving way to boats. I explained that this wasn't the notice there originally, and there was no notice at all there now regarding angling, he clearly thought I was mad  and I came away thinking perhaps he was right and I had imagined the whole thing. I will try to find the email later.

My point entirely - there is no info regarding angling and who takes priorty. I like it there but will now avoid due to my short temper and not wanting confrontation whilst on holiday!

  4. We noticed at the start of this season that the No Fishing signs on the quay heading between the two bridges had been removed. We have managed to moor there throughout the summer but the number of anglers has been steadily increasing. The BA signage for the 24hr free mooring does not state that anglers must make way for boats wishing to moor so I can see this causing problems.

Just yesterday we heard from some friends of ours that they struggled to get on the moorings because they were lined with anglers. The angler that took their ropes pulled them in so hard that they hit the quay heading and damaged their paintwork. They were miffed with a boat trying to moor up and were concerned for the welfare of their fishing rods.

We came home yesterday afternoon and going over Potter road bridge it was clear to see that there wasn't a single boat there and no space either as it was lined with many anglers.

This is just a "heads up" to anyone wishing to moor there in future as the situation is not clear at all and I can see a potential for confrontation between boaters and anglers.

    Let's be careful out there.

    Regards.

I'm with Jeremy Clarkson on this one. If there is enough space for me to undertake the car stuck in the outside lane, then he is the one who should be prosecuted for lane hogging, not me. :default_norty:

In all seriousness the American view is that changing lanes is when most accidents happen. Since a legal overtake should involve you changing lanes twice, there is two risky manoeuvres. This is why it is not illegal to pass on the right, or left if safe to do so. The idea is you make one lane move to overtake and stay there until your next overtake, thus reducing the amount of lanes moves and potential accidents.

Well said but have you noticed their regard for the speed limit disappears the second you chose to undertake!!

  6. It's the same as those motorists who sit in the outside lanes of dual carriageways and believe it's there right to be there because anyone wanting to overtake would be speeding!!

Nonone should speed but it's up to the authorities to enforce the limits!

  7. Is it worth the effort?

A couple of weeks ago we headed up to West Somerton and whilst the place is very nice the passage up there made me nervous. The massive amount of weed makes it look very shallow and you wouldn't want to meet a boat coming the other way.

I haven't been there for ages but yes, It's quite clearly marked. Head out from Whisprting reeds and keep an eye out for the yellow/black marker post on your starboard side, it's about 5 minutes cruise from the yard.

It doesn't matter which side of that marker post you go but I'd get to within two or three boat lengths (25 yards) before turning. You will see two marker bouys (one red, one green) near the edge of the broad. Aim straight for them, when you get close You will see Catfield Dyke and Bob's your uncle.

If you choose to walk to the Crown in Catfield from the dyke, I'd be interested in knowing how long it takes you. Looks like miles to me!!!

I've seen that black and yellow marker post and did wonder what it was for. Now I know thanks.

Just measured the walking distance to the pub on Google Earth - less than a mile!

  9. Our home mooring is at Whispering Reeds at the top of Hickling Broad.

I would like to go and have a look at Catfield and wondered if there's any problems in getting there.

Is the channel off Hickling clearly marked? Is the dyke easy to navigate? is it worth it? etc.........

I like to do my homework before setting out so any advice would be appreciated.

  10. Hi. I'm replacing the impeller on my outboard - a Yam 9.9 4 stroke.

I know they twist into the housing in a certain direction but being a pillock I didn't take notice of which way the old one was in.

    Can anyone enlighten me?

    Regards.

Steel Developments is a specialist in propellers. It can repair, rebush and supply new, often at significant price advantages to a new one from the dealer.

Marine Tech is very good too. It is a Yamaha dealer.

I've been in touch with Steel Developments and they are going to refurb my existing one.

    Thanks everyone.

  12. Hi all and happy new year.

I think I've already asked about this a while ago but now time's getting on and I need to do something about it.

I have a Norman 18.5 with a 9.9hp 4 stroke Yamaha outboard. It goes pretty well but vibrates a bit and the prop is well worn and needs replacing.

There is no number stamped on the existing one and there seems to be a multitude of options available. Pitch, diameter, etc...........

The boat is used only on The Broads.

Can anyone advise or point me in the direction of a specialist I can talk to?

    Regards,

I would have thought that a woodburner on a norman 18.5 would be way too hot and would be a job to get far enough away from the hull or any other combustable materials.

You're probably right. More clothes and winter sleeping bags seems the way to go.

We've stayed in tents in freezing conditions quite comfortably.

    cheers all.

  14. Hi all.

I'm thinking of using my 18.5ft boat in the winter but with no heating it wouldn't be feasible.

Does anyone know of a cheap, effective and safe way of heating a small cabin?

I could use a fan heater but that would require shore power and I don't want to have to rely on that.

    Regards.

  15. I like the idea of reversing in but to be honest my boat steers very well in reverse so I don't think there'd be any issues backing out of the staithe.

I launch at Whispering Reeds and have to back out of the slip in sometimes tight spaces and never had a problem.
