  1. The NBS marina opposite the boatyard advertises a "live Webcam" . I hope they adjust the views to show the centre of the marina as they used to, so we can keep an eye on our baby as promised.

  2. Thanks, BB, that's a much clearer image too. It would be good if you could stop on the centre portion of the marina too, as it used to (so we can sit and admire our boat on rainy days). Ta very much.

  3. But is AHW at Gt Yarmouth recorded as having increased over the past 50 years, and is this reflected at PH? The IPCC thinks sea level will rise by about 3m this century, although in fact it's no more than an inch or two.

  4. sorry to be pedantic, but you can't have globular shaped spheres. You could have spherical shaped globules.
Yes, Bernard Woolley was my favourite character in Yes Minister.
Globular is defined as "globe shaped or spherical", so either way round the adjective is superfluous. Just sayin'.

  5. So - the big question: why do the continuously welded rails through the entire railway network not buckle as frequently as the ones at the bridge? Is it exacerbated by the bridge itself expanding, or is it the bridge mechanism rather than the rails which is at fault?

  6. Please forgive my naivete, but haven't we always had hot weather in summer? So has the bridge always failed to open when the weather is hot? If not, when did it start and what has changed?

Today we repair and restore steam engines and cars more than a century old. When I started as a trainee computer engineer in the 1960s I sometimes worked on complex mechanical machines from the 1890s still in daily use. Surely it is not beyond the wit of modern man capable of orbiting a satellite around the sun, or designing the Falkirk Wheel, to analyze this simple mechanical problem properly and find a solution which doesn't involve tearing the whole lot down. A £million should more than cover it.

This is either sheer laziness or an excuse for some other political decision. Let's get a sense of proportion.

  7. Thanks, IPA. I've sent them an email.

Thanks too, Sidestand. We are near to Haines and will drop in. How could one not?

Only one of our arms has a plastic insert; it's a rather odd shape and still doesn't give a grip, but that is likely the solution.

  8. Wow, thanks for the swift response, Grendel. I have surfed the web till my eyes went crossed, and tried a specialist boat window repairer in Wroxham. In view of its similarity to the Haines 31 and others I wondered if any Haines owners had the same arrangement. The problem with other designs is making a new attachment point close to the glass.

  9. Probably a daft question, but why is rail expansion such a problem on the bridge - surely the same applies throughout the rail network? I had heard there were some problems in the latest extreme conditions leading to speed limits being imposed, but not to the extent of shutting lines every other day.

  10. Millions of years ago CO2 was a major component of the earth's atmosphere. Today it is only 4 parts per million, thus demonstrating that we have almost entirely used it up in the production of beer. The government should urgently work to help step up the production of 4WDs and re-open all the mothballed coal-fired power stations. They should, of course, declare a national state of emergency.
