Hi all, jus,t to introduce myself and say hello, great to see so many restoration projects going on.Have just finished my sea going project and decided to buy a Broads gentleman's yacht.Purchased fron two people whe sailed he for 10yrs ish and kept her in good shape until 2017 when being .laid up in Cox's yard, Barton Turf.

So am now the new owner of Elusive a 34ft gaffer built in 1933 by Barnhams. Hope to have her back in the water in June all being well, depending on how quick they can get her in the shed for new planks.

Am from the Lincoln area so not far from Wroxham and hope to meet with other members soon.

Welcome from another newbie!  Having just renovated a boat myself, expect it to take three times as long and cost twice as much!

Thanks for letting me join the forum.

My history with the broads goes 40 ish years when I was a child on the Northern broads in a traditional wooden boat (apologies if my terminology is miles off!). I remember mooring up back then was a case of finding a tree or two and hoping they would hold! As I grew up the trips to the broads became fewer and fewer and with college and university they stopped all together. Fast forward to May last year and we had a chance for a family holiday, myself and wife, parents, sister and her children on San Elena from Richardsons. I was nominated to be captain, actually I think the others didn't want to make a fool of themselves during the training run. My first time at the helm of a 40 odd footer but I was surprised how well she handled.

This year we are booked during May / June, again with Richardsons, this time aboard Majestic Gem and have already booked for April 2020. My wife and I are also looking at the two of us having a quiet week at some point,. We're thinking possible Barnes Brinkcraft's Brinks Sonnet for the added bonus of bow thrusters to help with mooring.

Hopefully 2020 may be a good time to look at either buying a boat share or our own small boat, we'll have to see!

    Thanks again
    Dave

Welcome from another newbie.  I first went out on the broads with my parents 40 years ago, and now it's my turn to take my own children out on my boat.  The Broads has changed over the last 40 years, but it's still the best inland waterway in the uk as far as I'm concerned.  And, you can still find stretches of water without anyone else for miles (particularly at this time of year).  Enjoy!

Hi ya Rich, I see you were talking about Secure Outboard Solutions.com. I am registered with them as well. They saved me last year with my boat. Did you see you can register any boat and trailer now.  I would advise that you check it out. Good luck

Thanks for that, I'll have another look.  I've got my new engine and the auxiliary registered, but I didn't know you could list your boat too.  Cheers, Rich

I would also go for the security hood. The more trouble the would be thief would have, the less desirable your motor becomes.

In addition I'd have a sticker saying "The outboard on that boat over there is much nicer than this one!"

Loving the sticker idea, don't think I'd be popular though!

Not having a hood on an outboard would make it more difficult to sell certainly - do not the stickers come off with adhesive removal??

Certainly on the Broads those Police hoods seem to be a deterrent - who wants to go through the pfaff of getting a new hood, or not if its fairly old, before selling stolen property on?

They advertise them as tamper-proof, so difficult (but not impossible) to remove.  Knowing my luck I'd remove the hood and then lose it! lol  Like other members have said, anything to make it less attractive than the one next door!

If you have to leave your outboard attached, could be worth getting one of those police covers you leave on instead of the hard cover. Makes them less attractive to nick, knowing the scum have to sell them on without the original cover.

Thanks for the advice.  I've registered the new engine and you get WARNING stickers which act in a similar way I guess?

They certainly act as a discouragement! I believe that the Police have yet to have an outboard reported stolen with one of those attached, although it would not be a deterrent if they really wanted your outboard!!

Thanks for the advice.  The worse part was the damage they did removing it.  It had a lock and a chain, so they smashed the lock and broke off the cleat which the chain attached to.  This caused a lot of damage to the transom, and several days in my garage getting covered in fibreglass to patch it up!

Welcome from me too Rich, Where is your boat moored, with a bit of luck there will be a member close by who can keep an eye open on your boat.

Thanks.  I actually keep my boat on a trailer and just launch and recover for days out.  The engine was stolen during a fishing trip in the Lake District over the winter.  I've registered the new one with secureoutboardssolutions.com and it's got warning stickers all over it, so hopefully it should deter people in a similar way to the Police hood covers other members have suggested.

    Hi Rich and welcome

That's proper infuriating, hope your insurance is providing you with a new one, even then your loss of NCB  will sting a bit

    See you afloat

    Griff

Thanks.  It wasn't a particularly expensive outboard, so I've not claimed.  Just bought another second hand one from eBay.  I've registered this one and it's got warning stickers on it, which should make it less likely to be stolen.

:default_welcome: from me too. Are you a boat owner or hirer?

Thanks. I'm a boat owner, but nothing posh.  Just a little Shetland.  Someone kindly stole my outboard over the winter, so I need to get the new one fitted before I next venture out....
