  1. Ohh yes I remember them well both in boats and caravans . I don't think trusting them was an issue as there was no alternative they were rather smelly and used to hiss at you but at least you knew when your gas was running low they used to pulse the light went up and down . I seem to remember there was a notice that stated you had to have the vents open when they were in use . As well as that my old Nan used to live in a town house with gas lighting it was turned off and on by pulling on little chains on a rocking arm type system , happy days and don't get me started on the old gas geysers that took your eyebrows off when they lit.

  2. I don't see a problem with narrow boats , there are one or two around Beccles and they all seem to be very well controlled , unlike some of the huge fly-bridge monsters that would be more at home cruising the Med .

I haven't seen any comments on some of the Dutch barges that are seen quite often surely they are also steel and are very well behaved.

I'm also old enough to remember the coasters heading up to Norwich through Reedham in the sixties now they really were something to dodge.

  3. It is a shame about Beccles they have a good harbour but it seems to be let go somewhat. the toilets and showers are a disaster, there used to be a good pub by the river many years ago The Loaves and Fishes but now it seems that the harbour area has been forgotten,as far as I know it is run by Sentinel which is part of Waveney District Council I believe. I think that if it were properly looked after it could be a gold mine for the town.

Perhaps the group that took over Beccles public hall and Lido would be interested in running it.

all that green space just sitting there doing nothing when you could use it for so many events it just seems a waste.
