    All the poor pensioners?

very subjective that one. My neighbour sits in a house worth over 300,000 car under 2 years old, private final salary pension and enjoys sailing in the Medway.
Means test the TV license because not every pensioner are poor nor every pensioner rich

    “All the poor pensioners”

I must have missed that bit. Where did it say that?

The fact that you know someone who’s doing very well thankyou does not detract from the truth that many pensioners are not. Is it too much to ask that they should be afforded some consideration in their later life

or should we just go the whole hog and stop their free prescriptions and bus passes as well

  2. If they cut back on some of the obscene salaries paid to certain “celebrity” broadcasters then they could manage without depriving millions of pensioners of a bit of entertainment.

A certain pundit reputably on £1.75 million a year springs to mind and a host of others who personally wouldn’t be missed if they went

  3. Absolutely marvellous gadgets.

When travelling home late one night, on an empty road a car full of people roared past me and pulled in front of me.

Traffic lights ahead were on green and as he reached them he slammed his brakes on and stopped dead in the middle of the road.

Fortunately, I was wary of his driving and stopped in good time.

When other traffic began to pile up behind us he started his car and they raced away.

     Crash for Cash perhaps?

All captured on dash cam and downloaded to computer for future reference

With regards to memory cards I always use a high endurance which will last longer when constantly being wiped and reused

Just another thing to remember is that the GPS records speed, location and time so one has to be aware of speed limits

  4. I started my working life in engineering and we used Imperial units and, on some sheet metal jobs, even fractions.

I’ll never forget the one guy who would say its 22 inches and a quarter and an eight and a sixteenth and a little bit.

The fun came years later when we started the change to metric. We were building units with components from USA --Imperial and from Europe--metric and we had to mate them together using interface plates

It seems that anything that is featured on Jamie Oliver's new cooking programme is being immediately snapped up by people round here.

Sounds like the old Delia Smith effect. When  she did her program years ago whatever ingredients or utensils she used were complete sell-out in all the shops and supermarkets for weeks after

  6. When Douglas Bader had an Alvis TD 21 He used to bring it back to the Alvis factory for its service and wait for it as a guest of the Directors while it was being done. He found that his tin legs wouldn’t fit under the table so without further ado the Directors sent for the works carpenter who cut out a large scollop from underneath his part of the table and problem sorted.

Years later when the board room was being refurbished I bought the table and still have it at home over 40 years later

  7. Armstrong Siddeley were indeed an excellent car. I used to live quite close to the factory where they were built and it was not uncommon on a sunny day for the factory doors to be left wide open next to the road and you could see the cars being built inside as you walked past.

Another local car factory was The Alvis Car Company and two of its more well-known owners were HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and Sir Douglas Bader.

Sir Douglas Bader personally used to bring his car back to the factory for its service

  9. A few years ago, I dropped my wife off in town to get some shopping while I popped up to see my sister a couple of miles away. She had just had a brand-new BMW delivered to her house straight from the dealers and hadn’t even driven it yet. She said, you take it down town to pick your wife up and see what you think of it

Of course, about a mile down the road while stopped at the bottom of a hill at red traffic lights a boy racer in an Escort rear-ended me, wrote his Escort off and lifted the back end of the BMW off the road.

    Try explaining that

  10. Just dug on old reel to reel tape recorder Elizabethan LZ 34 model out of the attic with about 6-8 reels. Unfortunately, it’s not working very well and the reels date back to the 1970’s with contributions from friends and family, many sadly gone. I’m hoping to transfer them to a modern media to preserve them.

I’m looking for somewhere to borrow, loan, or rent one just to do the transfer, otherwise try to buy an old second hand one in working order, if I can find one (they stopped making them years ago) or try to get this one reconditioned because once the reels are transferred I’ll have no further use for it.

    Any ideas gratefully received
