  1. Hi Clive and Plesbit

Fasinating programme...Yery interesting, as am also, or should say was a very keen railway anorak. Steam was my thing until we arrived at Stalham in 62!

I then became a boating nut...specialist subject-cruisers...However after studying that vital 20secs of film I too have had to give best on identifying the boats in shot...for the present anyway!

Will have a more in-depth look tomorrow night after work when a bit more time available...This gets interesting, when one picture (as posted by Clive) opens up so much information about a particular place/people from days gone-by.

    All the Best...Terry B :Stinky

  2. Hi Clive

With ref to the above pic of the Stalham Yard....

I was wrong about there being no boat/s in the picture. Right in the centre of shot behind the line of trees you can make out a Merlin/Osprey outline moored stern-on to where the second building shop was to be erected. And...if my eyes don't decieve me to the far left just below the granary site, is the pull-out/relaunch tractor as driven by Ted Piggen...

I really must get these eyes seen too

    All the Best....Terry

  3. Hi Clive...me again!

Your Dad's yard at Oulton on commodore rd prior to 1958.

The 2 Ricko boats in shot are Fancy Free-W320/Care Free-W783 and Wayfarer-W176/Just Jane-W201. Too far away to tell which one from either class.

    Keep em coming please...Cracking pics

  4. Sincere apologies Clive...I called you Paul on my last post...!

    Couldn't it be earlier??

There dosn't seem to be much activity!...No sign of Boats and the second building shop and dinghy hanger still not erected! Do you know who took the pic?...it is certainly the earliest of the yard I've ever seen..

These forums are real mines of hidden info...and getting better all the time cheersbar

    Regards Terry

  5. Hi Paul

Looking over from the Riverside that used to be the dingy bank towards the staithe. First small building on the right were the offices. Second on right Engineers shop and the hanger immediatley in front the first building shop erected. Year 1958.

  6. Hi Clive...Welcome to this wonderful site and thanks for some cracking info about your families early ties with the Broads!

I make it, that with the important dates already supplied by the knowledgable members here that your Great Great Grandfather was the owner of "The Oldest Boatyard" on the Broads... to date anyway!...Something to be very proud of imho.

    Do you recognise my Avatar??

    All the Best....Terry B cheers

  7. Hi Fellow Broads Lovers

Just been having a browse through the varios topics on your site and found this one that does interest me very much. It would seem that it is a while since anyone put a reply onto this thread so thought I'd add my two penn'orth and see if anyone can add any info to the little I know.

I suppose it depends on how you look at this, but I personally take the subject to mean "Yards that Hired" to the public and not just Boatbuilders??

The obvious one has to be Ernest Collins being the only yard to be represented by Harry Blake in 1908, although he was in business prior to this date otherwise Blake wouldn't have known about him.

Have also read somewhere that John Loynes was the acknowleged founder of the Hire Business dating back to possibly pre 1908 and have it on good authority that there were others...The Press Family for one having had a Yard at Belaugh many many years ago!

Can anyone confirm or better add to would be most appreciated.... cheers

    Best Regards

    Terry B
