I’ve just been watching Fran and Rich’s latest YouTube vlog (they are regular canal boat vloggers…channel ’Floating our boat’) where they were saying that the government is due to slash funding for the CRT (Canal and River Trust) from 2027. I wonder if the BA might be similarly affected? Hope not!

Worrying. I've just returned from a fortnight on the Llangollen and Montgomery canals, our first canal holiday since we sold our share in Winding Down in 2014 after many years of canal boating since 1984. Quite a few of the bridges definitely needed renovation work and a couple had large cracks in the brickwork - one in particular where the arch was coming away from its surrounds.

The C&RT has repaired the banking under one bridge we passed, not with the original coping stones, but with what appeared to be a length of wood* about five foot long of similar cross-section of a balance beam, which will probably stop the bank from falling into the canal but is not in keeping with the rest of the bridge and as it was set back from, and didn't follow the natural curve of the remaining coping stones, would probably be susceptible to further damage caused by boats hitting it.

If the funding is to be slashed i think the future for the canal network is bleak.

    * I don't think it was concrete as it was too smooth.

BB boats in Brundall (later Freshwater), small family yard with six boats one of which was called Peripin.

Think Perrapin was a Broom build. Lovely looking boat. Think it was moored under covers downstream from Coldham Pub. Possibly went to the Thames from there.

  3. I did jury service when I was 29. Second day I was one of the first 12 called. The defence rejected me and some of the others. I was glad not to be on that case as it was a traveller accused of killing another traveller.

I was selected for a case later in the week: a woman accused of throwing a yam through a greengrocers window - how that ever got to Crown Court I'll never know.

I was called again when I was about 55 when I was self-employed and had booked a holiday on the date of service. I pleaded my case and offered to serve at a later date, which to my surprise they accepted.

I had a third call when I was 68 but a couple of days later received another letter cancelling the first letter.

So jealous, I've always wanted to go to Cornwall, living in Manchester it's a bit of a hike. Beautiful pictures and going to make sure we visit in the next year or two.

I've lived in Manchester all my life and am lucky that my parents (usually with extended family) took me to Cornwall in the early 60s and I have been going back regularly since. This post made me realise that I haven't been for about four years so will look at going for a couple of weeks next year.

I love all of Cornwall (and Devon) but St Ives is probably my favourite; I've been to St Ives in May, June, August and September and even January and February - in both of the latter I have had days when I could walk around in a light jacket.

It's too far for me to drive these days (as I head for 80) so last time we broke our journey down, at a lovely Premier Inn (called Bristol Sidcot) at Winscombe on the A38, inland from Weston-Super-Mare. There are plenty of similar hotels north of Bristol for the return journey.

My guess would be the old "coal wharf", where wherries used to lower their masts at the mouth of the Bure, where it joins Breydon.  Behind the houses at left would be the Haven Bridge and off the photo to the right would be the infamous "yellow post".

I remember how a lot of private boats in those days were converted from old ships' lifeboats. There are two in this photo.

As usual Vaughan is spot on. There are three hanger type buildings in the background of the original photo (top centre). Attached pic from that era shows those buildings (arrowed).

  6. Know exactly what you mean Wussername. I had to give up Broads boating a few years ago after 60 years because of balance issues. My grandchildren came along quite late in life and its only now that a couple of them are old enough to help with boating.

Can't realistically risk being on a river, so this year we have booked a narrowboat for a couple of weeks. Getting on and off the boat on a canal is usually on the level so much safer and we will have a couple of young teens to help with the locks etc.

We are really looking forward to a leisurely two weeks on the Llangollen and Montgomery Canals in July.

Although the weather was a bit miserable, it was a good choice to use the train. My son loves trains and had been telling anyone who would listen that we were going on a 'FLIRT' train (the name of the new trains up here and no, I have no idea why they are called FLIRT either).

Having just passed WRC yesterday and today, there are no obvious visitor moorings available so I'm grateful to read above that they are. The space on the front looks like a short-stop water and pump out place like it always was. There is nothing whatsoever to motivate boaters to stop overnight. I think the fact the marina is full of brokerage boats and private moorings contributed to my impression.

This was our allocated overnight mooring . . . It was pre-Tingdene though.

Watching a video on YouTube saw this Wilds at Hebden Bridge on the Rochdale Canal. It's a screen shot so on the big screen might be very blurred

That one has been there for quite a few years. I saw it when out on a picnic boat in April 2014.

It doesn't seem unreasonable to charge a mooring fee on a private mooring as long as there is a refund against a meal.

I have to admit that I have never actually moored in Horning. Is there even a Broads Authority free mooring there?

Yes on the village green just near the Swan . . . but you'll be lucky to get a mooring there especially in the main boating season.
