Laura - I do hope despite the time delay you discover this post, as I can provide some detail for Sundog's last year or so.  Vanessa, my wife, and I bought her around June 1974.  She was then owned by the people who owned the wherry yacht Olive (or was it White Moth?!) and was moored at their property which was about a mile or so from Gt. Yarmouth along the Acle straight on the left heading towards Yarmouth.  I think we paid £500 for her.   We got married in the August and the first night was spent on her.  By that time we had her moved to Wheatfen Broad, Ted Ellis' (the naturalist) property.  We had a very interesting evening on our wedding night, somewhat worse the wear for alcohol we had to take everything about half a mile through the woods and then across the Marsh!  Very memorable!

Vanessa was teaching at Bungay Middle Schòol, and I was in my final year at Keswick Hall College of Education. Our intention was to do her up and we started a lot of work in that regard, whilst living aboard. We had her moved to Geldeston in September 1974, as that was nearer to Vanessa'so work, and lived on her very happily, despite the damp!  The wood burner was brilliant!

In the December we went to the West Midlands to visit Vanessa's family.  Whilst we were away she sank! She had a plank removed, well above waterline.  But a strong wind blew her onto the bank and as the tide went out she was held there, tipped and flooded!  We came back to find all our possessions, including wedding presents, either floating or sunk! We had her pumped out and managed to refloat her.  It was clear we couldn't live on her for sometime.  But our intention was still to do her up.  There's lots of details I could give in that regard, but sadly have no photos. But then a few weeks later Vanessa found she was pregnant and VERY reluctantly we decided to sell her.  We sold her to two young men who worked on the rigs and so we were told and thought had the money to fully restore her.  We went to see her a couple of times.  On one occasion  she had been hauled out and was on the bank, the next time she was burnt out.  I don't cry much but I did on that occasion.  She was truly magnificent and if I could rewrite history I would not have sold her.  She still has a very special place in my heart.  My eldest son, Ben, was conceived on her; that's how special and personal she is to me.  I would be very happy to answer any further questions. Hope that's helpful and fills in a few gaps.

Wow thank you so much sorry I have only just seen this... I know my grandad brought her and used parts from the white moth to fix her... I think some of my aunties and uncles was also conceived on her too. Would love to be able to talk some more my family would love it please and thank you. Kindest regards Laura :)

  2. This is 1 of the pictures painted of sundog in the late 60's when my mum lived aboard her. Each of my uncles and aunt all got a painting done of her so they are all slightly different. We have a few photographs of her but not many. It's fab finding all the information I have about her so far. :-)

Laura, I have absolutely no doubts whatsoever that it was Sundog that was broken up and burnt at Geldeston. I don't know who owned her but when I spoke to him he told me that when he discovered that her back was broken that the job was beyond him. The next I heard that she had been broken up. Planks had been taken out and she had hogged quite badly, such a shame but unless the owner had adequate expertise and a very healthy bank account then Sundog was doomed. As it was she was well past her end of life, she had been inadequately chocked up and her counter had dropped. Her covers had been allowed to deteriorate and rain had done its worst. I suspect that there really was no other realistic option other than to break her up.  You must remember that there were hundreds of wherries at one time, very few had much of a recorded life, in life they weren't seen as potential history. You are very lucky, your family has history and a Broads heritage behind you, rejoice in that!

My Grandad James Hyde (jim) defo know pulled her out at Geldeston. I was told by royalls yesterday that some of white moths parts was put on sundog for some reason or another. But im just happy to of found a little out if nothing at all. Yes there was tones of wherrys back then I for one feel very lucky indeed that my family had something to do with her its been amazing to not only find out about her and a little bit about my grandad.

Thank you for all your help and information you have given me!cheersbar

  4. This is another one we found but wer not to sure if it has A867 on it. Crazy that there isnt Much info on Sundog at all and everyone has such different storys about what has happened to her. The only thing i know for sure id that her mast is in Royalls garden.

I'll stick to being in front of a camera rather than rigging them up...

Now..have a look at this link, it is HMS Warrior in Portsmouth.  http://www.hmswarrior.org/webcam

Clear it is a PTZ (pan zoom tilt) camera which has a set patrol that then stays on an image for 10 seconds.  I think this is rather handy as you don;t get someone trying  to control it stuck on something of complete disinterest 0- but would you look at the quality and frame rate!

Have this sort of thing at Ludham Bridge - 10 seconds on the bridge height, 10 seconds on the bridge you get the idea..

Yea defoi a great idea and also when the 3rivers is on would be great to see too

  7. Thank you for that imtamping2 yea we have this picture but many thanks.

I have just gotten off of the phone to a Nigel at royals boatyard who have told me they have the mast. He has been very helpful and told me a few things about my granddad which was amazing and helping me to find out more information on Sundog

  8. No i haven't my aunty Ecila had though. I know that sundogs original name was Alice as my aunty was named after her with the name spelt backward.

Also thank you for the link. we also have these photos... its a shame there isn't much information on Sundog

  10. Yea as far as i know my grandad tried to restore her but i think he stupidly pulled all the planks out at once so i have read somewhere however dont know if that bit is true. we have been told loads of things about her. We also got told thatsundog was burnt out and her mast is in a pub garden in Beccles. Another is the mast is in Mr royalls garden and had the name jennymorgan on top of the mast.

I have currently a painting in the office that was done of the sundog went my mum lived on her. would be lovely to now try and piece together just where she is and what pieces are where.

would be great if you do have some pictures of her JennyMorgan. :)

  11. I think I might of asked this along time ago but since the passing of my nan 4 months ago I'm really wanting to find as much info as I can about sundog... I have been told that her mast/sail is at Royalls boatyard but have been told today that she could all be at this yard does anyone happen to know anything would be a massive help.

    Many thank

I think that would be a good idea and helpful if it was able to show the height gauge for the bridge too.

What could be a good idea is to get in touch with Inner Shed – who run www.norfolklive.org – this way you would have a known cost to get it all set up and running, and they would take care of everything from the camera to the software and integration into your website.  A bonus of this route would be that you feature in their ‘directory’ of webcams that is slowly growing – you’d have your website linkable through this just like Barnes Brinkcraft do with your logo watermarked over the image.

Of course there are many ways to get a webcam viewable to the world, take Herbert Woods which is more akin to a photograph being updated every few seconds – the main thing is how much effort and money you wish to put in to things and balancing what we the viewers may wish for (HD real time streaming video) and what you wish to provide.

Thank you for info LondonRascal will defiantly look them up.

Defo want HD the better quality image we can get the better. We are now getting somewhere with our website as the domain name took forever to get but once its set up there will be a link on there to the web cam.
