  1. Couldn't agree more with most of what has  been said here. When I bought and insured my boat I checked that my insurance covered me for night cruising, apparently there are some that don't, so it is definitely worth checking your policies.

I was moored up at Potter last saturday, it was blowing a gale and made for very interesting nay scary viewing. A hire boat came past about 8pm with all cabin lights on and at some speed, weaving all over the place. They shot past me ( I was moored just downriver of the ladder by the pilot station ), I then heard lots of engine revving, evidently the skipper had seen a large intermittent contact on his night vision, commonly known as PH bridge. I didnt get out in time to see what happened but after much shouting and engine noise, it shot back past in the opposite direction. Don't know who it was other than it was a bathtub and am assuming it was hire as there were no navlights evident. It does provoke the thought - what could have happened given the fact it was pitch black and pretty darned windy, makes you shudder !!

  2. Very useful and thanks all for the replies. JA has given my devious mind a cunning plan to have a look again at the wiring and perhaps fit a domestic stat in circuit if it is a two wire set up. In the meantime i will give our man a shout and see what he has to say.

    Thanks again

    Trev

Ps, will be sure to mention the NBN.

  3. Hi everyone,

does anybody have any experience in replacing the standard on / off switch with the green led, with a thermostatic one. What I want to know is does the current wiring loom support the installation of a thermostatic type or do you have to install a new loom too. I have the switch / led type set up and would like to replace with a thermostat. I cant make much sense of the wiring so any tips and help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks in advance

If money was not object, and I mean seriously no object:-

    1)    I would just have to have a riverside property with a wet shed big enough for 'B.A' plus TWO brooms woody Admirals. (Need three woodies for our annual Lads Week) In the grounds to the rear of the humans kennel would be a humongus boat shed for me to tinker away in restoring yet more woodies.

    2) Confident skippers who are members of the NBN would be able to borrow FOC any of the two Admirals

    3) Over in Brundall would be an immaculate Brooms Ocean 42

    4)  Potter Heigham bride would be raised up to give the same airdraft clearance and the neighbouring bypass bridge and a footpath bridge constructed slightly up river of it

    5)  The Dilham canal would be completed, fully reopened to navigation with a staithe / visitor centre on Antingham Ponds

    6)  The river Bure would be fully reopened to navigation all the way to Aylsham

    7)  The canal from Geldeston lock to Bungay would be fully reopened to navigation

    8)  There would be plentiful refuse sites around the rivers for boaters

    9)  I would fight tooth and nail to get navigation re-instated to Broads such as Great Hoveton

    10) That god awful Marina Keys area would be smartened up and have an off river berthing area for visitors and the like

    11)  More Windpumps would be fully restored back to working order with visitor moorings made available

    12) The Albion would not longer have to pay their own river tolls

    14)  I would dredge the Lower Bure good and proper from Stracey Arms to Haven Bridge, then send the invoice to the Ba, then take them to the highest court in the land for non-payment of said invoice

    13)  Wroxham would have a lap dancing club with an annual season ticket discounted for NBN members :naughty:

There that's enough to be getting on with for now

    Griff

Certainly dont think we can argue with any of that !

  6. I would have a bespoke designed boat, along the lines of an alpha flattie, 45 feet long, 6 ft 4 headroom even in the showers, wide doors, bow and stern thruster, 4 cabins en suite, big split level galley, dual steering....ermmm think I have just run out of interior space.

If money were really no object, would have a newbuild moonraker based on the 70's design, but the rnli a new offshore lifeboat -    oh, and buy the broads authority........now theres a thought.

  7. When I fitted out my narrowboat I used Screwfix Yacht varnish, it was brilliant, lasted over 10 years and still had a deep gloss.

Admittedly it was interior and I suspect that its formula has now probably changed coz of those darned EC rules but worth a look at. Have used wilkos too and have to admit it was good, in fact there was one bloke in our boat club who swore by wilkos paints and would not use anything else, even for the exterior.

    cheers

  8. Afternoon Griff,

Thanks for the enlightenment - Thats brilliant - a fine tradition in the finest of seafaring traditions. I hope that you have a terrific week and the weather holds out for you all. Keep a good look out on the horizon for errant lapdancers and prepare to repel brown hatters off the stern..........ooops sorry not PC there !!

I reckon that Robin will make a good Elwood Blues - he has those dark swarthy looks but can he dine on just dry toast ??

    bon voyage

    Trev.

  9. Hello all,

I have seen lots of referençes to the annual lads outing, do pardon my ignorance but what is it exactly, i get tĥe impression it is a long standing event though.

    Thanks

    Trev

PS  meant to say have a great one griff, be a walk in the park after the lusty reunion.

  10. It sounds like a Mansfield Traveller, spares are quite easy to get for these still I think.

The reason I asked was because I have a Jabsco manual fitted on my boat that I may be replacing and the bowl is fine and you could have had that.

    cheers

  12. Agree with everything that Vaughan says above. Done loads of these and that looks like it is about to self destruct.

Just two additional tips - smear the drive shaft splines with grease too. secondly, I always used to get a good finished surface on the backplate and cover plate by rubbing on a thick piece of plate glass using fine grinding paste, gives a far better and more even finish.

  13. I know how much negativity there is about these boats and know they are not everyones cup of tea but this is our holiday tale so I hope this doesn’t turn this into another of those Lowliner bashing threads.

    Hello Dave,

Great write up about the boat and it is nice and refreshing to see someone have positive things to say about these boats, I am still getting used to mine and have not really spent a lot of time aboard since getting her but like you, I am learning to cope with the issues and she is really growing on me now, the points you raised are all spot on and very valid. Good for you mate and glad you had a great holiday, look forward to hearing the day by day accounts.

    take care

    Trev.
