If they are looking to get additional funding such as a grant - they need to tick extra boxes and adding education and public participation will help/is essential!

This is absolutely correct LizG!.....education, conservation, equality/diversity, community engagement and "carbon neutral" are all hoops to jump through if you want to succeed with external funding bids, government funding (core or otherwise), and for major commercial development planning applications as well.

I have sometimes wondered if this might be the reason behind some of the seemingly odd (to me anyway) BA priorities?.........apols for thread drift.

  2. Don't you think that if they had intended to charge for mooring they would not have included "free" in the application in the first place?

Personally, I welcome the ambition shown in the planning submissions for Acle Bridge and Stalham. In difficult times, Richardsons are looking to make the most from their assets. Boats, land, locations and I am sure, their people as well......good luck to them!

Cheesey69 started a thread last year, exploring the difference between charter and hire for boats on the Broads. I concluded (rightly or wrongly) that there wasn't much difference except the price! As has been mentioned, there is a large area in the Stalham marina proposals, designated to charter

Time will tell but I don't expect to see a huge reduction in the Richardsons fleet. I am sure they will turn round some of the older fleet but will continue to buy or build more of the top end (charter?) boats.

And, speaking of ambition, let's not forget Clive Richadson's proposals for Horning Pleasurecraft, coupled with his growing of his excellent hire fleet through building and buying.

It is good to see confidence in the future, I hope that the new year, as it unfolds, brings a bit more confidence for all of us, goodness knows we need some!

I think they will out shop most of the laundry and I guess the boat maintenance could be done in one shed with a much reduced hire fleet which I guess will come a few years down the line.

must admit it would be nice that there’s something at acle as I think the site at the minute looks very run down especially first impressions on people picking a boat up a bridge craft.

Having hired from Horizon at Acle bridge I would love to see the basin busy and loved again!

    Good luck to Richardsons.

  4. The forecast for your week is looking pretty decent (at the moment), so hopefully the river levels will continue to fall and you will have a lovely relaxing, moor wherever you choose week.

The water levels at the marina should be better too.

I look forward to reading about your week......sounds like an excellent way to start 2024!

  5. The top accessory, in what was the first of my now nine Volvos.......(a fabulous 240 GL estate).....was an orange plastic potty. Kept behind the front passenger seat, perfect for the children on a long drive......

I think your glaringly obvious orange bathtub is a very lovely boat. I have holidayed on a couple of them and absolutely loved them. She's where she belongs, on the Broads

    Stay safe

I couldn't agree more!.....lovely boats, we hired most of the Horizon 35's from Acle Bridge over the years, really well set out and spacious, my kids loved them......yours looks great (as orange as it is) Kate!

  7. I am so sorry Troyboy to hear about your health issue at home, it must have been a difficult decision for you to have to take to sell your boat share. I hope that you will be able to get back on the Broads soon...

This has been very interesting reading. I am, in my mind, constantly trying to offset buying a boat, with the associated fees, against 4 weeks hire a year. Having owned two boats in the past I do think that there is nothing nicer than cruising the Broads in your own boat. However the costs are becoming untenable. How long will it be before a large percentage of boat owners give it up altogether.

If you are looking to hiring 4 weeks each year, have you considered syndicate ownership? I can highly recommend it and Helen mentioned that a share is available on Moonlight Shadow .....other syndicates are also available.

  9. We have moored at Sutton 3 times this year and will be going again at the end of the month when we are back on the Broads. Sutton on the green is one of our favourites. Marge is spot on, no problem whatsoever for us.

Go and have a look for yourself Lawrence. Ok the leccy might be off but don't let that put you off going if you want to.

Now, here's a thing.  I was sitting in the wheelhouse a few minutes ago, enjoying my morning coffee with it's modest addition of Lambs, when in flew a wasp. It started buzzing about causing me to reach for a folded Telegraph,  my weapon of choice on such occasions.

I was yet to find the newspaper when in flew a butterfly,  little brown job  can't say more than that.

Well, I WAS planning to swat the wasp, but certainly NOT the butterfly. This got me thinking.

Notwithstanding the risk of being stung, the wasp was doing no harm, also the wasp grubs do no harm either.

Whilst the butterfly was also doing no harm, caterpillars do eat things that we want, so it made more sense to eliminate the butterfly than the wasp, yet I had no wish to do so.

By this time two things changed. Firstly I was holding my rolled up paper  and second, both insects flew out of the open cockpit window.

I had actually decided that neither beasty was going to receive the journal but leaving as they did, ensured their futures, well from me anyway.

Funny how these things pan out.

I think that is how Attenborough started...........

To put it into context from what I have seen,

The lease isup for renewal soon.

The Parish Council want to encourage more boaters to use local businesses.

    The BA attended the discussion.

The PC are considering a section of short stay moorings to increase visitor numbers during the day that revert to overnight stays later in the day.

Not quite the same as some of the wild speculation on social media.

I think our Chairman has this about right.

  12. Not in Brundall but three operators I have hired from;

Norfolk Marine, based at Womack Water, Caribou in 1981.

Hearts cruisers based at Thorpe, I can't remember the boat name but may have been Queen of Hearts in 2001 or 2002.....A fabulously elegant old cruiser with a folding wheelhouse.

The wonderful Horizon craft at Acle bridge. We hired many of their bath tubs from 2000 until it closed 7 or 8 years ago.

I can’t for a moment agree with either the Blessed Authority or the now very political RSPB in wanting to move the liveaboards from Sutton Broad, just what harm are they doing?

However if said boats are not tolled, BSS or insured, then they shouldn’t be in the water at any location

    Just my opinion

    Griff

    I agree 100%.
