On the one occasion that we needed a midweek pumpout on a hire boat, it turned out that the heads shared a holding tank, we were charged for one.

I have just seen a trailer for a new channel 4 series. 'Narrow Escapes' is about live aboards on the canal network, first episode is at 4.00pm next Monday.....might be worth setting to record?

The scaffold might give the impression it is new building Vaughan but these houses have been there for decades.

We love Sutton Staithe. Such a peaceful place to moor and the pub is worth a visit too. We moored there 3 times last year, twice on the green next to "live aboards". Ok, so the boats may look a bit battered and bruised but those on board have always been pleasant enough.....no problems encountered whatsoever. Overstaying at moorings, particularly on the electric posts is an issue that needs better management but I suspect this is a handful, not all, and both times we moored on the green we got plugged in. The Wayford Bridge Hotel is excellent. We have stayed, eaten and drank there and I certainly recommend, but don't let a few accounts of how awful Sutton Staithe has become put you off going.....it isn't awful at all.

Not just Hamptons, when we were hiring Horizon 35s they had the same starboard drift going astern. Some seemed more pronounced than others. I wasn't sure if it was the prop or it was a balance issue, a bit lower in the water at the back starboard side would create more drag that side going astern? Maybe a combination? Always seemed fine going ahead. Never noticed it on other hire boats or our syndicate boat.

Excellent thread revival!......our favourite is the Old Mill in Hoveton, on the riverside between the King's Head and the bridge, excellent breakfast and great service. A very close second is the Granary at Ranworth, really good breakfast and good service. The only downside is the mooring fee.

Great choice of boat! Looks perfect for single handing and has everything you could need for a fabulous week afloat. Have a brilliant time!

The food at the Granary is generally good, I particularly like their full english. We have only had lunch and breakfasts, not an evening meal. That is because I like a decent pint or two with my dinner. So if the same quality of food transfers over to the Maltsters, the beer is good, and prices aren't too daft, then it will do for me. Well how about that!? I will have been 25. Went with my girlfriend on a tiny boat called Caribou, from Ludham marine, at Womack. And ditto, that's what set it all off for me too.

1956 LizG was my first trip anywhere.......it is when I was born. Like you I have no photos of my first broads trip, or my first hire boat, I didn't own a camera.

I respect your views as always Griff, but we all have our favourite moorings, for different reasons.

If you are planning to leave early the next morning it is much easier to get away if you are moored at the end. It spares your neighbours from a bumpy early awakening, particularly if there are a couple of the newer, larger cruisers opposite each other. It is also far more interesting viewing at the end, both wildlife and watching the boats turn. I don't know if these were the reason yesterday, but for me personally, the end of the dyke is one of my favourites.

6' 8" clearance under Wroxham bridge first thing today! It has dropped by a foot since last Friday. Still a bit to go but isn't it amazing what one dryish week can do?

All true Jean, but for me, I like the journey to be as much a part of the day as is the destination. The 2 train line videos you posted the other day reminded me what comfortable and pleasant journeys they are, with glimpses of the rivers along the way.......magical for the seasoned broads botherer! Or you can sit on a bus?..............

Andrew I have been to Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Cromer and Sheringham, all on separate days, on the train(s) from Hoveton/Wroxham.......always a lovely relaxing trip, and a decent choice of eateries when you get back in the evening. All currently dependent on the slim chance of getting under the bridge again any time soon!
