Are they necessary?
No, definitely not, we got them when we upgraded the boat and wanted them
Do they make you lazy?
Yes, but who cares I am on leisure time
Do they work?
Yes, and work well, they are electric have their own batteries and when you use them you move, no ifs or buts - if they don't they are the wrong size and type
So it's all just choice, different folk have different ideas on boats from the most basic to the most elaborate.
You pays your money .......

We have witnessed lots of speeding all the way from Berney to Surlingham most hire boats but more than a few private vessels too
I think most hire vessels should be drastically governed down
They could still have their full power for going up the Bure if it was done based on Gps mapping /tracking
Come to think tracking would let hire companies check boat speedsand location
The downside cost and complication so it will never happen
Nice to dream though

Funnily enough we arrived at the swingbridge at Reedham on Monday and as we approached it started to open
I carried on keeping hard right and there close to the dolphin protecting the pivot was a large Gin palace
Due to tide and such I would have. Given way but he was still unable to proceed, so I kept right and went through, receiving looks that would kill from some woman perched on his port side
My point is he should not have been there so close to the bridge, a sudden engine failure would have seen him pushed against the bridgeHe should have been on the pontoon provided
I "waved" vigorously!

John, ours is 26 kg and seems to work well, except when it gets very windy
Braveheart weighs about 7.5 tons
I would imagine you would suffer the same, as your boat has a fair airdraft also

We have been moored there since last night
Saw two guys in pub and lights on, but otherwise, still very much a dead zone!

Is there some special reason why you want to arrive at Yarmouth as the bridge clearances head towards minimum?
Or is it that you wish to leave OB at a particular time and want to know you will actually get under the bridges
Everyone will stilladvise using low slack water as the safest and most sensible option

The reason for all the questions is simple - no one uses high tide unless you have hired a submarine!
Most hirer's would tell you to go at slackwater

You see a lot of weird stuff flying around there , we saw some apache gunships the other day , very low
week before it was three tilt-rotor transports ,actually transitting from plane mode to helicopter mode

we got a small oscillating fan , 12volts ,about 6" dia , got it at Snugtopz Chandlery, Brammerton
Lots of interesting goodies on sale there !

I think it all depends on what the individual wants , and no one point of view is correct
Some people get their kicks from shivering under a tent made of their rags and sticks, on a boat with no engine , others want warmth , dry and yes a few comforts , but who can say which approach is correct , its what works for the individual that matters
Traditions are all well and good but nothing stays the same forever
Lets face it a few decades ago, you might not have been astride the logs , but they were certainly floating around you !
Be thankful toilets on boats have moved along with time ................

Why is it simpler ?
Well for me anyway its a 30 second job to hook up , and then forget about it , I then run immersion heater , heating, kettle ,microwave or whatever I wish , especially in the cold end of the season
Its cheap , does not burn my diesel , and is very controllable
We have two diesel heaters , one hot air (original and kept as standby) -not very controllable either , its hot or cold !
The other is a new hydronic system which heats the boat and/ or water and is very good , but diesel powered heaters are not ideal in extended use as they tend to eventually soot up and need stripping , so for me its simpler to use electric when its available and the other methods when its not

The posts need to be spread evenly along the moorings and also have a suitable number of outlets , not 3 posts 1 boat length apart .
We have reduced from original 6 berths to a much more comfortable 4 and fitted a very large hot water cylinder , which can be heated 3 ways , engine , via Eberspacher hydronic heater and by immersion heater
But the immersion route is always the first choice for simplicity

I personally agree with BB , the cost is nothing , and it works well in general
Yes it would be nice to get new moorings and preferably with electric , but that will only happen with toll increases
Surely if these posts are as well used as they seem to be , they are self financing ?
I know lots of folks like the simple life , and are happy to basically camp afloat , but I prefer comfort and happen like having anything I need onboard

It is well nigh impossible to charge batteries properly to full charge by running your engine ,unless you run for many hours , or fit special boosting regulators to your alternator
Therefore connecting to a post where convenient makes sound sense by prolonging battery life and ensuring max charge
A boat that never gets charged from shore power, will in general have to replace batteries sooner than those who charge from shore power
Its not easy to get connected at times so the posts are definitely well used .
Its particularly convenient on a miserable wet day to heat electrically and run a dehumidifier at night

I would never dream of trespass on the cruising clubs hallowed precincts - perish the thought!

I was passing Thurne the other day and noticed a few sailing boats moored here
Later on the way back, I had a good look at the mooring and have to say I would not hesitate to moor there if I wished
Does anyone know if these have reverted to a private landowner or the E A. -
One of the boats I passed today was turning at a marker buoy, so I slowed and as soon as he turned across our bows, I passed behind ,but was he happy, no as he came tacking towards us, right off his turn and thought I would or even could stop again in such a short time!
He was forced to tack sooner (and still came far to close) fortunately with out contact
I was at this point almost in the reeds!

I would agree, it's only when they are racing there's any problems
At. Such times it becomes almost impossible to see any common sense in play

I watched two hirecraft attempt to negotiate approx fifteen or so sailing yachts on the Bure at Thurne this afternoon and although the hirer in front tried to show care and respect for the sailing types, it quickly became apparent they were simply not going to attempt to let him through or even let him know which way to go
It seems the more timid folk are, the less respect they get
Tiring of this waterborne farce I went carefully forward and passed both hirer's and proceed through
It was quickly apparent that SOME of these folk believe they can simply do whatever they like!
At some point surely common sense must come before the sailors god given right to act like a total @rse!
When so many boats are tacking with total disregard for each other never mind power craft I can see only one result - chaos and potential collisions
