Without going off the topic of coasters, the boat in the right foreground is the Four of Hearts, so that dates the photo as 1957 or earlier.

The Four was sunk and written off by a coaster while moored outside the Beauchamp Arms at Buckenham Ferry.

Grain ship to Beccles, over to the left. Of course the Beccles bypass bridge prohibits anything really high.

The other Broads hire cruisers are L to R. Pearson - Barbers (Pearson Marine) "Golden Nymph", H. T. Percivals "Panther", a C. J. Brooms "Commander", possibly a Martham B & D Co. just showing her bow and H. E. Hippersons "Rest-A-Whyle. Golden Nymph dated from 1955, so narrows the date to 1955 / 1957.

  2. Thanks Norfolk Nog. Sums up the philosophy of James Hoseason that customer care was paramount and from that everything else flowed. Having met over the years members of the Lowestoft office they all thought he was a great boss and company to work for.

In the 1970s I used to get new members of the staff in our order office to ring Blakes and Hoseasons and pretend to enquire about a holiday and then compare. Both were friendly  but Hoseasons always came out top. Obviously scripted but not overtly so, it was consistent and got you the customer to where you wanted. A model used everywhere today but in its day a pioneer.

I do think however in hindsight other marketing strategies were not as successful. For instance I think he was responsible for many peoples attitude that the Broads was a downmarket holiday which it still holds to some extent today and the obsession with standardising fleets.

Interesting article. How strange that Hoseasons tried to take over Blakes in the 1970s and yet it took them many years to finally achieve it. I first came to the Broads as a child in the 1980s and my parents always booked with Hoseasons for Broads and Thames holidays in those days. I loved the brochures, they were the hire boat web pages of their day.

They did not achieve it as the opposite happened when Blakes parent owner at the time, Wyndham Vacations bought out Hoseasons. The trading style  has been allowed to lapse but if you want to book online through Blakes you still can.

The 1970s event has always fascinated me. Blakes was still a co-operative and all I know is that it was promoted amongst others by Truman from the Blakes side to no avail. Perhaps Peter or Vaughan can enlighten?

Nearly every time we go to Norwich  we go to Elm hill, mainly  to visit the bear shop.We even have a loyalty card.Marina has a large collection  of steiff bears. Her first one given to her when she a child and  was recovering  from a kidney  operation by her Uncle  from Germany. Since then most of her collection comes from Norwich.

Wonderful place, always try but never can resist buying and keep on losing the loyalty card too!

My best guess regarding the oldest motor cruiser still in hire would be Martham's Jayne. Their remaining Janet is about 1951 closely followed by Tumblehome a year later but Jayne predates them both.

There are a number of ex hire broads cruisers still around that were built in the 1920's and 1930's of which Spark is obviously one but records are a bit vague to be precise as to which is the oldest survivor.

Jayne is relatively modern dating to the late 1960s early 1970s  I think you are confusing her with the similar but shorter Jane class that were built in 1952 and 1953.

There is a longer 9 minute version of the day available.  What I found rather disappointing was that the person who appears to have driven there, spends the day filming peoples' mishaps or waiting for a mishap!  I think some of the footage is zoomed in so it makes it look even worse than it was that day!

Having seen the longer video, just to confuse matters it does feature two different Ideal cruisers. One of which negotiates the bridge with no problem at all.

I also feel uneasy watching this persons videos at times. There being a number of occasions when a help or even a shout would have avoided some nasty situations. The only excuse I can think off is that they run the camera continues without actually being there at all times.

I do find the caliber of Broads YouTube vlogs (with notable exceptions ) to be far less professional than those produced about the canals. Relying far too much on the predicaments of boaters, the abuse of alcohol and the use of swear words.

I do remember an old Guardian advert from years ago taken from two perspectives. One showed what we thought to be a thug up to no good and the other the same person running to save a life. Thats why we have to be careful judging the event. We are told it was a hit and run but we actually don't know what happened next. Did they contact the yard or moor up and go back to the scene to apologise. All we know for certain is what's on the film clip.

However in this case the cynic in me says I doubt it....So hang em by the..... but only after they know they have lost their £500 security deposit.

  8. Having also posted a link to the video early on, I must admit I wondered if I was contravening Forum rules only to have that thought confirmed within minutes when it was removed.

This sort of damage can be sorted very quickly but I really feel sorry for the hirers on  San Marino who would have returned to that damage. It certainly would spoil my holiday, even though I had not been responsible.

I know it's going over old territory but it's about time the old security deposit was reintroduced.

.  Just hope the hirer didn't have a little knowledge and a set of allen keys or unscrew the knob!

Sorry to say I've been guilty of both but (and I know it's a poor excuse) I am going back to the time when there were few speed limits and if your wash wasn't breaking, you were considered fine.

  10. The old railway bridge on the Bure at Gt. Yarmouth had a whopping 15' 6" at A.H.W. In hindsight I think that link should have been retained rather than the existing terminus that ends on the edge of the town in the middle of nowt.

I don't think the bridge restrictions are too much if an issue. Potter definitely is but it's historic nature makes a rebuild impossible.

The main problem at Potter is that the modern cruiser has evolved in a way that makes them difficult to pass through (if at all), while up until the 1970s  the vast majority of (hire) craft could.

Besides Potter the one that can really catch you out is Wayford. if your on the Dilham side after a downfall of rain you could be there some time!

Absolutely agree with you, this is one reason that the excess deaths figure is so important.

My partner who is part of the management team of a 150 bed care home lost 9 residents to Covid in two weeks during the early peak of the pandemic. In the last 10 weeks they have had just 2 deaths neither Covid related. So the situation has improved greatly. Summer has a lot to do with this and we will just have to hope the now improved testing of staff and better provision of PPE will help during the coming months.

The chaos surrounding the early days of the crisis was in no small part down to the governments incompetence and their reluctance to admit the problem. What they said they were doing to help for care homes bore no relation to what was happening in the real World.

    Best wishes and good luck.

I dont know about anyone else, but this comes across as a little disrespectful to me, if you are not interested dont read, but to make a comment indicating the subject bores you seems to me to be disrespectful of those that are taking time to put their thoughts down on the forum. This is why we dont have (and never will have ) a yawn emoticon, as it is a sign of disrespect.

Must take issue. It was not I who mentioned the yawn emoticon and that reference of it originally was aimed at myself. I took that remark in good humour. The reply to Poppy was tongue in cheek hence the smiley. I'm reading the thread because I am interested in the subject, will continue to read the thread and to comment where I think appropriate and can assure you I do not disrespect anyones opinion but neither should they mine.

Indeed. Was it a hire boat? Couldn't see any markings.

The craft's name is visible in a number of takes and although an Alphacraft build, it was not a hire boat. Looking at the heavy bow protection I get the impression it is an  ex hire craft that has come from a waterway with locks.

Impressive video and a job well done by the rescue team. Must have been a scary moment for those on board.
