It was a good race to watch as a spectator, not so sure about some of the racers... a lot of boats were reefing, many turned back, and several boats lost masts, booms, etc because of the wind.
My photos from the race: http://www.flickr.com/photos/petelawren ... 887992042/

3 Rivers Race webcams can be found here: http://3rrcams.horningsc.co.uk:81/
The URL is slightly different to the one on the official site - but will handle more traffic.

how about a "yes, with caveats" option?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've just ordered a hood and a circular polarising filter. Once the sun makes an appearence I'll try to post some photos both with and without the hoods and filters to try and illustrate the results.

Hi all,
Recently I've been looking into purchasing a polarising filter and lens hood for my Canon 500D in order to try to eliminate rogue light getting into the picture. Has anyone had any experience with using polarising filters and lens hoods? Do they make a noticable difference? Do any of you use any other sort of filters to enhance your photos?
Thanks,
Pete

Was that the Alpha 42 footer Pete? I think I saw one for sale on their boat sales website but could be wrong. Its not there now.
Have found one of them listed here. I guess they've been phased out, and replaced with the newer, smarter lullabys and melodys.

My only concern with the design is as helmsman using the outdoor position I would feel detached from my loved one(s) if they chose to remain inside (which my children tend to do).
You should consider yourself lucky, many parents I see spend most of their holiday trying to prevent their kids from falling overboard!
Is it just me, or is Brink of Day no longer available? I'm pretty sure I remember seeing one of them out on the rivers at the end of the season.

A definite improvement on the old site; but doesn't look like it got tested in Firefox.

Oh, forgot one of the most useful ones: Appfresh
It will automatically check for updates for all the software installed on your laptop, and update it for you. It also integrates with IUseThis, which allows you to store a list of all the software you use on the internet, then in the event you need to format your laptop, or you get a new one, it will download all the software you previously had installed.

Are you sure you clicked on the right download link? There's an annoying advert that looks like the download link, but in fact isn't. If in doubt send me the youtube url, and I'll give you the download link.
Pete
Pete, Hi
I downloaded this but is there anyway I can get out of paying the $$$'s to use it just once?

Pop the URL into: http://keepvid.com/
You will be given a .flv file to download, which can be opened on any computer that has flash player installed.

Congratulations for going for a Mac! Once you've been using it for a couple of weeks I'm sure you'll probably never want to go back to a PC.
Mac's now come with Exchange support out of the box - http://www.apple.com/macosx/exchange/.
Mac's don't use outlook, instead you have 3 separate programs, but which all tightly integrate with each other.

This might link might be of interest to you http://magicseaweed.com/Lowestoft-Surf-Report/19/
It's primarily designed for surf predictions, but it may be of use to boaters who venture further from shore.
The canoe club I'm in uses it quite a lot to decide when the best surf is about to go kayak surfing. From experience, it tends to slightly over estimate the size of the surf, but this may be down to the shape of the beach.

Great tale so far Jonny. Looking forward to the next installment.
Perhaps next time you go on holiday we should ahave a forum sweepstake, guessing how much coke you'll drink!

Try giving the hireyards a ring directly. I think the 3nights price = 4nights price may be down to Blakes/Hoseasons. I'm sure if a hire yard have a boat free for a 3 day period, they'd welcome your business.

I have been looking to get a mobile dongle, so when the kids are on their school holidays we can spend more time on the boat, but I can still work (being self employed that is quite important!). I have heard, though, that on the Broads broadband simply isn't reliable at the moment.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
It depends very much on which provider you go with, and what area of the Broads you are likely to be frequenting. The maps I linked to should give you an idea, but you'll notice that outside of Norwich, 3G (mobile broadband) coverage is very poor. I imagine dongles will fall back to GSM/Edge when there is no signal. This has the advantage of being much more widely supported, but much slower speeds. If you are just checking emails though, this should be sufficient.
Threat to our freedom?

I think you've struck the nail on the head there. I've seen too many posts incorrectly accusing the BA of this, that, and another, that I now take everything I read from those posters with a pinch of salt - like you say, it's only damaging their own credibility.
