Guest Oiler
Hi, We are hiring from NBYCo, and their yachts have Cool Boxes, not fridges. Having looked on the Web at a few 12v versions, they seem to be battery killers. Anyone with experience of them, are they as useless as they appear (from the examples I have looked at) for storing milk/food? Rgs. Brian
The cheap cooler boxes £ 40 dont have a compressor, they keep things inside about 10 degrees lower than outside. You cant rely on them to keep meat fresh for more than a day or so. This kind of cooler will run a normal battery flat in about 12 hours THe other kind, costing £200 + do have a compressor ( many truckers use these ones ) and you can keep things inside at about 5 degrees, just like a proper fridge. THis kind will run your battery flat very quickly indeed
Guest Oiler
Thanks Brian, Last last year we only started the engine once every 3 days or so, for 20 mins, just keep the batteries topped up, having a gas fridge. We hardly used the lights, going to sleep at dusk, rising to the sound off the geese at dawn. Other than a trip up to Coltishall and back we sailed exclusively, using just one gallon of diesel over the entire two weeks. Silence was truly golden last year. Careful planning on destinations is going to be required to remain 'sailing purists' this year it seems. After all people manage with the powerless Hunter boats. Just another challenge and skill to learn. With our party doubling in size from normal , individual demands have more than doubled too. One off the reasons we keep returning to the Broads is that our holidays are ALWAYS different, never the same. Rgs. Dick
