A traditional battery charger is basically just a PSU and would work in the way you describe.

Modern multi-stage smart chargers work completely differently though and it's undesirable for them to "see" a fluctuating load. If they do, they'll keep running through a bulk charge cycle, which can damage the battery in the medium to long term. Isolating the fridge and running it directly from its own transformer avoids the issue.

    Cracking answer. Thanks!

  2. This is the damage caused to Southern Crusader by a shaver socket. It was in use at the time by someone charging an electric toothbrush overnight! They were very lucky as were asleep went it went up.

Can I say a big thank you to all the replies - always great to hear accurate information from a different perspective. I think it's the initial outlay that makes me consider syndicates as more expensive but you are right about getting money back at the end. Also, for me as a teacher, I could never find a syndicate that I could make use of for more than one week a year.

Keep your eye on Southern Crusader, there are shares currently for sale on the website and you only need to buy one week at a time.

Just to offer an alternative opinion, hiring is very convenient (especially if you become a regular with a friendly boatyard). I could be completely wrong but a week on a syndicate boat didn't seem that different from a hire boat but with a hire boat, none of the problems are yours.

If I'm missing something, please feel free to correct me. I am far from educated in the world of syndicates and ownership!

A week on Southern Crusader used to cost me just over £300 per week and when I sold the two shares I had I actually got back more than I paid for them. I think Southern Crusader is the only syndicate boat that offers fixed weeks so the week you buy is always within a few days of each other every year. www.southerncrusader.com

I can't remember, to be honest.

Might be worth updating the specs with that. The HE denotes that it's the heat exchanger version (as are most Broads boats).

So that'll be the 50hp four pot then?

Yes, thats the one. More than nippy enough for Broads use. The engine spec is on the specs at the top of the advert but have just changed it so it appears lower down in the description as well. Cheers

  6. Try GJW Direct. We have a syndicate boat in Mallorca through them. If you have no luck there try Pantaenius. Southern Crusader is currently with Navigators and General, they told me a couple of years ago they were not taking on any new business with Syndicates but we were ok as existing business.

Regretfully Oyster has unhelpful history: https://www.sailingtoday.co.uk/news/oyster-825-polina-star-sank-due-to-unsound-lamination/

Whilst it almost certainly won't happen again the fact remains that it did.

The guys that bought the wreck of this own Boats.co.uk. It is now sailing around the Caribbean after a very extensive refit/rebuild

  11. No probs. Just as a word of warning we could not find anybody to service our Waeco fridge when it broke, only had it 4 years or so. Good thing about the Isotherm ones is that JPC will come out and fix them. NYA are good for Gel Repairs for future reference also.

  13. We have just had one of these fridges fitted yesterday by Tom which he managed to do for us the same day as the boat was in Brundall. Very happy with it so far. Swapped it from our Waeco which has broken after 5 years and I could not find anybody to repair it. Went with the Isotherm in the end as Tom can do repairs on these.

I can also thoroughly recommend NYA - they have been very professional and helpful and far more communicative than Mount Batten Boathouse. In Plymouth it was a case of asking for them to do some work, they agreeing to and that was that - you heard nothing back, no emails responded to or letting you know they have been on the boat etc it was a call or email with an invoice and you knew the work had been done. To be fair, they would send photos or videos to evidence it, but with NYA everything is explained and what they will do and when and tiny things like the Shaun taking his shoes off when came on the boat - I am not bothered if people do or do not but he so doing showed me he gives a damn about other peoples possessions.

I get the feeling that with NYA you are pretty much sorted - they have a lot of capabilities and work closely with other third parties and in such instances would act as a sort of 'project management' so I suspect they will be tasked in due course to sort other items out, improve and upgrade Independence further.

I'll second that, they did some work for us over winter and found Shaun very helpful and communicative
