  1. It comes as no surprise that there is anger .the other day whilst stuck at road works I noticed not the school bus but the normal route bus with around a dozen passengers all wearing the masks at the bus stop and by the time I got a green light to go the bus filled up with school teenagers not wearing masks .........perhaps the virus doesn't like entering the bus ??

You couldn't make it up and that was whilst driving through Oldham the covid capital of the world

I hope to produce a video of how to winterise a boat shortly. Having said this, I will also be happy to provide a winterisation service to any boat owner who would like me to do it. I am happy to talk anybody though it.

Iam not really at my best trying to explain in writing - and i guess there are plenty out there who gain a better understanding visually like me ...sounds like a good idea to me

We have been here last week on a different thread.

Sorry, Finny, but there is some terrible advice in this post because of a lack of understanding of how the system works.

Running the engine with the seacock closed for 30 seconds or 30 hours
    WILL NOT
    empty the system of water.

The pump can only pump water from a source and push it through the system. if you stop the flow of water, it cannot evacuate the water that remains on the output side of the pump.

Why will antifreeze mean you need to refurb the toilet? Not putting any protection into it and having a freeze will ensure you need to refurb it.

EVERY SYSTEM ON YOUR BOAT THAT HAS WATER IN IT NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED FROM FREEZING.

That might be by completely removing the water from it or protecting it with antifreeze

Doing it wrong could cost you a lot of money and could sink your boat in the worst cases.

Dont be sorry Andy  - there was a time when i was asking the same questions because i did not know my boat . as a result i paid a very reputable yard to come and show me and i guess there will be an element of every boat will slightly differ which is why i also advised to seek professional advice - things are only easy when you know how

i missed the bit about trapping antifreeze in the inlet seacock . the first year i paid the other 10 years she didnt sink or cause any problems on re-commision

  4. I dont mean to sound nasty but when you use the term " iam guessing " it implies you are not sure ? And you really need to be confident that your boat could stand a hard winter lay up - you only need another beast from the east situation to do serious damage.

My advice would be to call in an expert. Explain the situation and let them show you the ropes that is specific to your boat .it really is easy when you know your own system it also takes away any worry should the weather take a turn

  5. i often wonder if we over complicate the situation ,for my 1.5 bmc i used to have a 90amp starter and two 110 leisure batteries upped to three when i had a electric fridge and warm air fitted we would moor up for lengthy    periods without the need to fire up for a re-charge

    keep it simple my motto

  6.  make sure your engine cooling system has enough anti freeze to protect the engine - it will be a sealed system like a car then close the inlet seacock - i used to run the engine for 30 seconds or until water cleared the pumps and pipes  via the exhaust - thats the engine done

i then used to drain all the water tank and domestic system usually i would find a pipe at its lowest point undo and let the water drain in to the bilge ...oh and open all the taps and keep open that includes the shower - no anti freeze required remember most systems drain into the river via the bilge and anti freeze kills

the toilet - do not put any antifreeze in this .........unless you fancy giving it a refurb at the start of the next season ,simply have a pump out - i used to coat the bowl with some cheap cooking oil for lubrication then give it a good pump around

if you are worried about your capabilities ......simply pay someone its not worth the worry over winter

  9. i know of some neighbouring authorities to make agreement to having different colours for differing waste bins - you would be amazed at how many bins get stolen ,some also do weekly some do every fortnight where i live its every three weekly its all based on average weight

And that pretty much sums up the situation nationwide.

The attitude of local and municipal authorities of all colours now is we are there for their benifit not they are there to serve.

Whilst I fully agree that common sense is thin on the ground in most cases there is an underlying reason. Take Peter's bricks .last year I had to rectify the damage caused by a resident who took the time and trouble to chop a 3ft concrete fence post into small sections then hide them under his household waste - as a result and in this case they jammed the packing mechanism blowing the hydraulics on both packing arms- no problem it just meant the the other 1200 other residents was not having a collection that day .......oh and buy the the way these packing arms cost 5k each the total repair bill was 13k .but that ok it's the councils money ............hang on a sec ?.....or is it really your money ?

  11. The biggest problem with recycling bins is getting people to put the right stuff in them it's a problem councils across the country have .example would be if a container or bins was placed for paper and cardboard and someone put a few bags of household black bags inside it would render that bin as contaminated from a recycling point of view and could not emptied on to the recycling bin truck - if it was mixed in  the recycling transfer centre would then reject the whole load on the vehicle and rather the paying for the product would administer landfill tipping fees - it's cheaper for councils in many cases just to simply remove recycling bins that are constantly being contaminated , bin trucks normally average 10 to 11 tonne loads tipping fees would in the region of three and a half grand per load for landfill

  12. It quite ironic that nurses on the front line could not get a test unless they had symptoms a few weeks past and it seems now that the anti-body test is the way the NHS is moving forwards within

I have two nieces ,the first niece was working Red ward - her anti body test was negative

the second niece ,high dependency nurse - her anti body test was positive - she had had covid and did not even know as a result her family have had both tests - all negative

how do you work that one out ??
