  1. I think the Gunwharf Quays used to be where HMS Vernon was, the anti submarine training establishment.

    I love Pompey, spent a lot of time in that dockyard, I am contemplating a short visit soon but fearful of what I will find, will all my old haunts be plastic theme pubs ? I am told they have even tarted up Rubys, removed all the Naval Plaques that covered the walls,   { well plaques and an inch of nicotine.}

I know things have to change, but memories should not be tampered with !

    BTW Great post.

  2. A lot of people on here are comparing the women's game with the mens ? it can not be compared, OK same rules, same size pitch, but there it ends. If the England women's team were to play against a very average 2nd division EFL team in a competitive match they would be hammered. It is an inferior product, slower, technically inferior, ladies lack the passion and aggression not to mention the strength and fitness of a male professional. A great achievement and a great performance I agree in its context of a women's game but  not to be compared to the real thing.:default_hiding:

Its like drinking alcohol free lager, why ?.........

No such thing, but we have only had the one boat in 17 years of ownership, we tried several styles in our 20+ years of hiring  so had a pretty good idea and then spent a year or so looking for the right one.

Can’t argue with that thorough research Fred.
I think most of us are so keen to get afloat when the funds become available we just jump in.
It would be interesting to know what proportion of boat owners of say 5 or 10 years on the broads and elsewhere are still with their first boat ?  my monies on not the biggest proportion.

  4. The food was a bit repetitive, I was moored in Brundall for seven years the menu was the same when we left as it was when we arrived !

Opinions on the place depend on what you expect and the standards you require.
Could be a great establishment but lots of money required for a roots and branches overall.

No it's  not just you - it's the ethos of The  Yare and as a new customer it takes some getting used to. But it's still the best pub on the Broads for all that.

I always felt like they were doing me a massive favour allowing me to spend my money with them.
Never met more miserable bar staff.

Forty five years ago today. An extremely good looking young man of just 16 years and nearly 2 months old arrived at the main gates of HMS Raleigh. That was the start of my Royal Naval career. Twenty four years and twelve days before they retired me. Without doubt the best years of my life

I see you went to the Royal Navy 'Light' training establishment. Ex Ganges myself proper trained.

Just joshing, we all had our self esteem, dignity and teenage attitude removed in much the same way, and hopefully we still hold some of the values instilled in us at these establishments today.

    Congrats.

  7. Agree with Cal its wash not speed. My boat was a sea boat not at all suited to the Broads, I was constantly being told to slow down usually by moored craft, had to bite my tongue on more than one occasion whilst shifting in and out of gear at 3 knots !  I do feel that some of the complaining moored boaters would be more suited to caravanning though.

Enjoyed the Broads, now on the coast.

but is that more 'could have' 'suggested that' and media reporting, unfortunately, like the scientist I need more than could have, suggests that and early evidence suggests, the problem is that by reporting this as they are, the people who have been vaccinated feel they are invulnerable now, and will start unconsciously relaxing their guard, forget to take a mask, meet up with some old friends, head down the pub, etc. until there is clear evidence that the vaccine is reducing the transmission, we should still be careful. ie scientific proof.

I think people who have had the jab by now are largely responsible people who are taking all this seriously and will continue with precautions.

I could agree with you if the vaccination program had been in reverse order, if 18 - 30 year old party going ravers had been vaccinated I could see complacency there. I am sure, given time to assess, the vaccine will show a reduction in transmission as well as serious illness and deaths.

  9. I spent the last seven years at Cove, David is a gentleman who worked very hard to please everyone.

The marina has all facilities and he hired a crane every year to lift out for winter those requiring it. He had a constant maintenance program of quay headings, landscaping and facilities etc, a great deal of Davids daily work was physically demanding.

He told me last year this was his plan that's when I gave notice on my berth in the Marina, I do not think an individual would try and fill Davids boots, I think the buyer will already have a considerable foothold in Brundall and Cove as an affordable friendly place will be no more.

I don't know if David reads this forum but if he does, good on yer mate, enjoy the sunshine in Crete.

  10. After ten years and three boats I think its time to move on. I could never tire of the Broads but I could certainly tire of the A47/A17 !  does anyone have any opinions/recommendations for cruising the Great Ouse ?  marinas ? are the locks manned ? and are there many locks ? moorings ?  etc etc.

    Any opinions/advice appreciated.

Not if you die from it!

Flippant comments always welcome . I am assuming you have read Dr Lees article ?

It adds balance to the doom and gloom we read everyday, I believe life's for living and intend to do so ( whilst socially distancing ) I also understand there are people who are terrified by what they have been told and my sympathy is with them. But to lock yourself down in your lead lined bunker until this all goes away is asking for mental health problems, anxiety, depression......

then one has to recognise that the person waving to you requires assistance, i was in a queue of 3 boats when an inflatable waved, the other two boats waved back and carried on, i went to investigate to find they had a dead engine and needed assistance, i took the non swimmers aboard and towed them back to the waveney river centre, even though i was on a hire boat and the two in front had been private. the people on board were most grateful

Waving on the river is somewhat the norm ? :default_icon_wave:

  13. In this case apparently the wind was the problem as it usually is when manoeuvring a boat, and as we know blustery wind can catch out the most experienced of helmsmen. as a boat owner I recently made a 400 mile round trip to my boat to decide the conditions were too windy to take the boat out, confirmed when I saw a 40 ft hire boat out of control coming sideways down the river !

The problem is, I could return the following week or whenever I choose, the hirer has a week or so , an annual event, so rightly but mistakenly will take the boat out in any conditions.

It should be an unwritten law that boaters help anyone in distress on the rivers, hirers or otherwise.

  14. As JM has said, a very safe small Broad. Unfortunately over the last few years the weed has developed, couple this with shallow areas, a hovercraft would be more suitable these days.

It is however, a beautiful place to mud weight overnight, peaceful, scenic and the fishing is decent.  Enjoy.

No problem just call the lifeboat. Seems that Hemsby lifeboat were called out recently to assist a leisure craft with three persons on board who needed assistance to find a safe mooring and who were unsure of their exact location. Even with all today's modern gadgets seems people can still get lost! What happened to good old map reading. Oh and mud weight and rhond anchors.

By the tone of this post it sounds like this would never happen to you, you are obviously far too knowledgeable and experienced to get into this situation.

But think for a minute, these people could have been inexperienced, frightened and running out of day light. They probably phoned the emergency services who in turn called the coastguard.

They did the right thing in my opinion.

  16. Have to say Im not a fan of the place, but I do have sympathies for the guy. I saw last season two large hire boats moored on his moorings that he has spent thousands on , plugged into his electric cooking and enjoying their own food and drink at his expense.

He does encourage private boats of the Brundall Navy type whose owners do not have problem with his extortionate prices.

I will apologise, I certainly did not intend to cause any offence.

Yes I could have booked a cheaper boat, but as we are a family of five adults we wanted a larger boat with more bedrooms and as I'm in the fortunate position of being able to spend a little more then that is what I did. We haven't however booked one of the 'glamour' boats as that would be outside of our reach.

The point I was making was to the other poster that if people have chosen to spend their hard earned money on the broads then it's their business - regardless of being furloughed or not. Many who have been furloughed will be struggling with coping on only 80% wages and my comment about the broads was in that context, no holiday would be 'cheap' in those circumstances.

    Again, I apologise.

PS. I took a lot at your website, I wasn't aware of your yard previously. Have you reopened yet as I couldn't seem to find any availability for any combination of dates and party sizes ?

A family of five adults that's £380 each for a week on a big boat on the Broads ?

You couldn't say in a Travel Tavern for a week for that.
