  1. Looks like the Broads Authority are taking their time in sorting the issue of the toll out but now that they have sight of the Insurance Certificate and providing it gives the cover they require then I guess that they will be in a position to cash the cheque and issue the toll.

This interesting thread has now being going for about 3 months is there any update on the broads authority stand that licence holders have to confirm that they have boat insurance before being granted the issue of the toll licence to use their craft on the broads.. Is the broads authority still insisting that boat owners have to confirm that they have third party insurance before they will issue a toll licence.

  4. The stern glands can be just luke warm to the touch after the shafts have been turning If they are hotter than that then they have been overtightened.

    They should be adjusted so that they drip about once or twice per minute. If the gland is overtightened then its not going to drip and the gland will overheat which will cause wear on the shaft and damage the packing.

    We have been using paypal for in excess of 10 years now and have completed several hundred transactions. On just two

    occasions in all those years we have encountered a problem and those problems has been rectified by Paypal immediately.

  6. The vetus 330 strainer has a raised cross on the the top of the screw on lid. Vetus do a plastic spanner that fits over the cross so that it can be unscrewed. If you want you can make a spanner out of ply to fit over the cross so that you can unscrew the circular threaded lid which can be difficult to unscrew without the proper tool. When refitting the lid put some Vaseline on the threads and on the o ring seal that will make it easier to remove next time.  Dave R.........

  7. It looks like a stuffing box on the forward end of the stern tube. If its fed by water from the engine then its likely that the bearings inside the tube are cutlass bearings that need water lubrication. I have not seen a stern gland of this type with the two pipes going to it. Most glands have just the one pipe or tube going to it and will have water going through the pipe if its a cutlass bearing type or grease if its a bronze bearing type which is quite rare now. As has been said it would be good to know where the pipe on the right goes to. To repack the stuffing box the boat would need to be lifted out of the water. The box would take about 3 strips of packing and needs to be adjusted so that the gland drips once every minute or so to prevent the packing from heating up.

  8. The rest of the mooring beyond The BA mooring is RSPB who currently leave it open to public use to support the pub.

    That may not be correct. Chris Shepherd used to pay the farmer owner of the moorings an annual fee so that boats could moor there and visit the pub and Chris used to collect a £3 fee from the boaters for mooring and gave a refund when they went to the pub. He had signs going from the pub and upstream as far as the east fence of the Berney Mill and collected mooring fees as far as that fence. Could it be possible that the RSPB moorings start upstream of the pump station the reedham side of the mill and terminate outside the RSPB cottages. That section of the moorings have private signs on them and is where the RSPB boat moors when it makes it daily run from Goodchilds.

    Full description

    This mooring plot is situated in the middle of Halvergate Marshes, deep in the heart of the Norfolk Broads. It has been in the same ownership for nearly 50 years and offers a rare opportunity. The mooring is approximately 5 miles from Great Yarmouth and 3 miles from Halvergate and Reedham.

    The land is in a remote and idyllic location with River Yare frontage extending to approximately 120' and a depth of approximately 60' It abuts a fresh water drain to the north of the site and is located between an English Heritage mill dating from 1870 and the Berney Arms Inn.

    Found the above it dates back to 2009.

  10. There is a pump station on The Berney Mooring by the side of the river about 10 yards away from the Berney Mill and an electrical feed could be taken from that location.

    I did ask broad authority personnel when they were working at the 24 hour mooring if hook up points could be installed and they said it was doubtful as the 24 hour mooring site was not owned by the broads authority.

  11. The Berney Windmill used to be open every weekend in the summer up until about 6 years ago. It is now closed but does sometimes open for one or two weekends at the most in the peak boating season. When it was permanently  open it was

    a good stopping off point for boaters and for walkers.

     

     

  12. The Berney arms was a success up until the time when Chris Sheppherd passed away. During his time at the pub the moorings were busy and it was normal to see boats double moored on the moorings and the pub was heaving with customers which supplied good beer and meals at a reasonable cost.Since Chris passed away several years ago now the pub has gradually diminished in popularity with a succession of tenants and today its hardly used at all and the moorings which once were full are now empty.It seems that boat numbers on the broads are less now then they were a few years ago. Its usual now on a Saturday evening to see less than four  private boats moored and no hire craft. Due to its locations some distance away from the hire yards the pub is not going to see hire boats until the Sunday evening and then on the Friday they will not be there because they are on their way back to the hire yards.If the pub does remain open in the winter months then who is

    going to use it? The pub relies solely on boat traffic and boats using the broads in the winter months are few and far between and there is no public road to the pub.Most people boats lay their boats up in November and then start to use them again in April.
