  1. I think there is also a lot of truth in the saying  “ there is no such thing as bad publicity”

Most people come to the broads for the 1st time, either by word of mouth, or are taken by experienced friends or family. I can’t remember the last time I seen an advert on mainstream tv by Hoseasons or Richardsons for a boating holiday on the broads?

I am sure I am not just imagining that there was adverts once upon a time?

Maybe there are regional commercials but they don’t make it all the way up to Bonnie Scotland. Social media is here to stay, and it’s not all bad. You are on a form of it right this second 🤪.

It would be interesting to know for example if anybody watching the rascals clips were convinced to try for the 1 st time, or did 99% watch them, because they already had the bug?

We had a 'Jolly Boys' four days a couple of years ago from Freedom when they were operating, on Absolute Freedom.  Rockland was an overnight stop with a lot of darts and drinking - we were treated like locals.  In fact the then landlord (now left unfortunately) gave us all one of their beer fest tea shirts.  A great night.  Lets hope it re opens with a like minded landlord :default_beerchug::default_smile:

I have a few great memories at rockland, both the pub and the moorings.

Is the pub definitely reopening? I wasn’t aware it was closed, but not surprised as it’s happening all over, more so on the broads.

About 10 years ago, I played my young lad at pool the whole week, stopping at every available pub, and if they had a table we stayed for a game or two ( and pass over some beer vouchers of course 🤭)

The final score over the 14 days was 34-37 , so as you can see, we found a few tables 😆😆😆

and proof that I’ve been to the pub at rockland before 😆. 2016, I posted it on here . Oh how time flies 🫣

  4. Well, the excitement is building, the maps have been looked at, the tides checked out, an update on what pubs are still open on the South, my liver has been warned 🫣.

And I’ve still got over 5 months to wait 😳

Ive booked pacific spirit for a week early September, with the fantastic pacific cruisers , who I have hired from 3 time’s previously. Unusually, it’s just me and my mate, who me and swmbo, took him and his gaffer to the broads a couple of years ago, for their first boating experience. My mate loved it that much, he is prepared to return with just me 😎, for a week of “ culture”

So, if anybody has hired this boat, or even better has pictures , I would love to hear and see them. Obviously, I have seen the pics online , but I’m especially keen to see the front of the boat.

Also, as well as liking a nice meal, myself and my mate like a game of darts and pool ( and fishing of course) so if anybody knows pubs which have these activities , please tell. Of course Beccles , Norwich and OB will do , but I’m not sure about Cantley, Beauchamp, Reedham, Rockland , Somerleyton etc.

So, to help my excitement, add to thread any knowledge you have on my queries.

Also, if anybody is about the South from the 6/9 , for a week, keep me posted . I will let you buy me a beer 🍺😉

I will update this as the weeks fly by, thanks in advance for any info 👍

  6. Calcutta cup back in Scotlands hands. Fourth year in row, some achievement. In Finn Russel Scotland really do have a special talent .
Scotland were actually robbed of a last minute try a couple of weeks ago which would have won them the game against France, and given them the chance to win the 6 nations for the 1st time.
Shame, as they won’t get many chances as the other teams tend to have much bigger and better squads. Scotland however won the final 5 nations, so are forever champions in that 🤪

  7. Sorry to hear this sad news. The world has lost a fighter with great spirit for sure. His pain is over and his family can be so proud of him.

Before seeing this post, I had just posted a light hearted reply on another thread.  Had I seen this first, I would not have done so, I hope I have not appeared crass, it was not intended.

    RIP Ian.

  8. Fantastic news, what a warrior.

play him this song ( if the link works! ) Chumbawamba. Tub thumping “ I get knocked down, but I get up again” seems very apt for him. Continued best wishes from a frosty but beautiful Bonnie Scotland .

  9. As a country, we are being bombarded by stealth taxes from everywhere. Absolutely everywhere.

I went into Edinburgh ( for the football) on the 2nd of January ( a public holiday in Scotland) which is treated as a Sunday when it comes to parking restrictions. Not this year, the wardens were out and it cost me £10  to park for 3 hours. Now, who has the power to do such a thing, nobody knows, and the apathetic way we now all live, nobody will bother to make a fuss and find out.
Sorry to hijack the thread, but it just seemed a similar charge to go about your business which has just been sneakily chucked in there.

The photo will have been taken from Carrow Bridge.  Left foreground is Reids flour mills, followed by the Youngs and Crawshays brewery.  The coaster further up, under the tall crane, is moored at Thos. Moy's coal yard.  Next is one of Steward and Pattesons' breweries, which was later Watneys.  Behind the white chimney is another tall black one which I think will be Bullards Brewery which was further up river, by St Benedicts.  Can't remember what the white buildings were but there was a large furniture factory around there, followed by Jewsons timber yard and the Great Eastern Hotel, by Foundry bridge.  The right bank of the river was all given over to the big Boulton and Paul factory, on the site of what is now a retail park.  In the centre background (I think) is Norwich Castle.

    thanks, but…..

What is the name of the folk on the cruiser?  :default_icon_e_biggrin:

  11. Hello and best wishes all.

I came across this picture, when browsing the old net, and it claims to be “ the port of Norwich”.
Now I don’t recognise it, but that dosent mean to say it isn’t. I have no other information. It does look like a broads cruiser though.

Any ideas, any of you Broads trainspotters. 😜?

  13. How is a loss of £37k not fatal for a community pub?

That money has to be found by someone surely. Suppliers, staff , bills and insurances all have to paid or someone will pull the plug for them.

    Or what am I missing?

  14. What I’ve never seen explained is how we are hoping to supply all these vehicles with electricity . The grid is already maxed out at present . To convert all that KW of power from petrol/diesel into electricity is astronomical.
Every town would need its own power station !
I think , not for the first time , our politicians are promising one thing , but the reality will be a lot different .

  15. I think it's quite concerning that HW are offering nearly half price holidays . I hope all is well with them . I know one or two have criticised them , but I've always found them to be very satisfactory. Yeah , I've had a couple of issues with a boat or two , but they have attended to it promptly .

I wouldn't be a happy bunny though if I had paid full poppy up front and someone else was now getting the same boat for 60% of what I paid , but back to my original point , I hope they are not struggling , as they would know it would upset some if they did this .

Funnily enough , I often watch their webcam ( how sad 😋) just to see all the lucky people , doing what I wish I was doing and loading up a boat for a week or two , and I have noticed it hasn't seemed super busy. Hopefully , I manage to help them out this year , but as the year goes on , and my disposable income goes down 😪, it is beginning to look unlikely .

I never give up hope though 😁.
