not yet, we are aiming for 19th may

Hi Rick, would you be willing to have a charity bottle on the bar for Hemsby Lifeboat? (We run a broads lifeboat and often have to launch from the slip opposite your pub).

  2. I'm in no way a "techie" so can't comment on the computer side of things, but given that my wife is 2 weeks away from her elected c-section date I would like 5 minutes in a locked room with the scum that caused this... Suffice to say he wouldn't be using a keyboard for a while.

Hemsby Lifeboat folk have a vessel on trailer specifically for Broads rescues, but it's not a RIB. Hemsby Lifeboat are not part of the Coastguard service, they respond to Coastguard requests for assistance.  Hemsby Pie is the expert here, look at his avatar picture ... he's one of the Hemsby Lifeboat crew!

Coastguard have jurisdiction for SAR operations on the Norfolk Broads. They have access to emergency services and assets (Hemsby Lifeboat is one of these assets).

Coastguard don't actually operate a lifeboat, but they do have local rescue teams who will coordinate the various services in an emergency.

Last year the Hemsby broads lifeboat was called out by Coastguard around 30 times (this is a dedicated boat for the Broads, they also operate a separate inshore lifeboat)

I have to admit I'm still very confused about this. Lets say I'm moored at Coltishall common. What sort of emergency would the coastguard have to offer that any one of the other emergency services could not provide, possibly even faster, yet the Free 24 hour mooring sign tells me to call the coastguard in an emergency.

I'm not trying to be argumentative here, I am genuinely confused.

As with everything in life, common sense must prevail.

So if, for example, you're moored up at a pub and you fall getting off the boat, there is clear easy access for paramedics then ask for an ambulance.

If you're moored up river half a mile and there is limited/no access then ask for Coastguard.

If in doubt then ask for Coastguard.

I know where I am anywhere on the broads. I know where I have come from and I know where I am going. Many holiday makers do not. Some do not know where they have been, have a rough idea where they are going but have little knowledge of exactly where they are in the case of an emergency. Nothing wrong in that sometimes I would have to think twice as to exactly where I am if I had to advise the emergency services.

    Andrew

That's all well and good but you may have missed the point a little.

The issue isn't about you knowing exactly where you are (although that obviously helps), it's about the emergency services despatcher who may not always necessarily know that where you're moored isn't easily accessible by land.

Someone falls over, hurts themselves and automatically ask for an ambulance. Ambulance gets sent, then on arrival can't access the vessel and asks for assistance. All that time wasted because the casualty asked for ambulance and not coastguard.

I personally saw this happen at least 4 times last year.

If you are refering to a private profit making company I would completely agree with you!

So does the Broads not make millions in (tax) profit for the government then? Every time you hire a boat, empty the waste, pay mooring fees, eat & drink at a pub, buy fuel... I would hate to think how many millions it's all worth in tax and duty.

£83k isn't going to attract the highest calibre candidate, you get what you pay for and in terms of CEO, £83k won't get you much...

    A massive £83k........

    Underpaid if you ask me.

    £83k for managing 140 people?

I know wages in Norfolk are low, but for a CEO worth his weight, managing that many people and that much responsibility, you're probably looking at 2 or 3 times that.

  8. Are the BA actually THAT bad?

Havjng looked at a couple of their open positions in the past they do not pay very well, below average I would say so maybe this is how they afford to employ so many people? And maybe that's why (if what I read above is true) they fail to attract the right candidates?

  9. I drive through potter and Wroxham everyday to/from work during rush hour and it doesn't add more than 5 minutes to my journey... they change for quite a long time so a lot of cars get through. Most of the hold up is due to laid back Norfolk drivers not selecting gear and releasing handbrake until the car in front has already pulled away by 100 yards...

If we can help with the website, let us know.

Afternoon Jonzo, apologies only just seen this! All support is of course welcome in any form. Maybe a section in the next few months for broads related incidents? Things are quiet at the moment but silly season is just around the corner...

  11. Genuinely wasn't on the wind up - I tent to keep away from political hot potatoes so hadn't bothered asking in the past, but many thanks for the great explanation!!

I can see the plus and minus points of being part of the national park family, it's a bit of a double edged sword as they say!!

A bit of a silly question I'm going to ask. Why isn't the lifeboat under the RNLI control ?.

Not a silly question at all.

we have always been an independent station; there are around 60 in the UK I believe? Both of our flanking stations are also independent as a Mundsley (I think?)

RNLI will place a station where they see a strategic benefit. As our section of the North Sea and the North broads are covered there is no need for them to have a station here.

We have a great working relationship with our flanking RNLI stations (Happisburgh & Gorleston). It would be nice to have their budget!!

Anyone know what's happened to the Hemsby Lifeboat web site?

It used to have a donation page and loads of information but now seems that the server is unavailable, I've tried pm'ing Hemsby Pie but not had a reply yet.

I get links to Facebook but many people (me included) won't use that

Apologies, I did get the message I am just waiting to hear from the Cox - I believe we have a Paypal account.

The webisye was taken down as our usual guy who maintained it left, it will hopefully reappear soon!

What does it really cost to call out the lifeboat to say a rescue of crew on a boat in the mud on Breydon?

Worked out over the 10 year serviceable life of a boat / launch vehicle (talking out broads boat here) the average launch costs £255.

This includes buying the boat, service, repairs, fuel, equipment etc...

Thats based on launching once a week either on service or on training which is fairly realistic.

knowing you're just a phone call away,

Unless it's a Friday and we're all down the pub. Sunday afternoons are more convenient - especially if it gets us out of lunch with the inlaws twoguns

  16. Thanks guys, Friday was a long night as we prepared for the surge, then after we left a crew at the station all night on request of Coastguard in preparation for the broads.

Past history told us that the council and Watkins (owners of the beach) would take months to make the area safe so our Coxswain arranged for plant to be delivered and the crew had the place sorted by Sunday.
