Thank you Ian.Tony and I will be thinking of you next Tuesday. I also valued your support when I was thrown my recent curveball. Tony knows only too well how Marina and the rest of your family is feeling.
With every good wish for your speedy recovery,

Hi all at least you got home safely in a comfy Air Condition in the recovery of your on your piggyback to your home town. Now the next bit on how much the Garage bill gonna be?
Nothing at all it's a Kia - 7 year warranty and it's just 2 years old. Just heard the car will be delivered back to us tomorrow. This is the 2nd Sportage we've had. The first gave us no problems at all for 8 years- hence we bought another. The problem with the fan belt tensioner comes from, I'm guessing, the fact that it's a mild Hybrid. Apparently they have been a bit problematical but they say this is the first one they 've had go wrong a 2nd time.

Yesterday didn't go exactly to plan. We were on our way to spend the day with the family in North London and as we were pulling into Sainsbury's fuel station on the A10 Enfield, the car started to make a loud noise. Cutting a long story short it was a repeat of a problem we had last year with the automatic tensioner on the fan belt. We got to our daughter's and phoned Kia in Ely who look after the car. Their instructions were to get the car road hauled back to them for attention and to not drive it any further. Top marks to Qdos our roadside recovery people. Within an hour we were on our way in an air conditioned moderrn recovery truck with our car safely loaded on the back. We were back in Ely by mid-afternoon and today finds us awaiting the verdict on how long it will take to fix . If it's not back today they will send a hire car. Such good service softens the inconveniance of an incident such as this.

The music from Grease was the first interest my daughter showed in pop music, denoting her passing from childhood to teenager! I remember she had her record player set to repeat playing "You're the one that I want" at full blast Which left me hammering on her bedroom door pleading for a change of record!

Last Monday after a 12 day stay on Hi-Jinks we went home but before we did we cruised to Sheerline 's yard and left Hi-Jinks there . We collected her today having had nice new electric windlass and mud weight fitted also having had the thermostat on the immersion adjusted as it was dangerously hot. We also had additional leisure battery fitted. Everything having been done perfectly we cruised her back to our mooring at NBS, arriving at about 4.20pm. Yet again we have received the best service from Sheerline. They really do go the extra mile and can't be faulted. We can't recommend them highly enough.

We went for lunch to the Ferry House last Saturday for the first time in about 3 years or more. We went by boat with one of our marina neighbours on his boat. As you say smaller menu but good just the same.

The registration numbers on the boat that gave us so much grief were very clearly displayed which is why I was able to make a note of them despite being thrown all over the place. This abuse of the system by certain individuals is obviously a real problem and will undoubtedly result in injury if left unchecked.

A walk into the chandlers' will see you as a licence to print money! Always look in a caravan outlet for what you want first.
Welcome to the forum!

We've never been out to sea on a boat we owned so do not have the experience to rationalise as some of you obviously do. When we cross Breydon and it seems a bit lively I stow anyhing that can go flyabout including t.v lamps etc. but on the stretch of the river approaching the entrance to the Waveney we weren't expecting anything like that. We've experienced water skiers numerous times and never had the remotest cause for concern as they've never targeted us like that before. I'm convinced it was intentional as they were laughing as they went by. And while we may not have been able to turn over, one of us could have been injured. I'm just glad I took the boat number as they have been issued with a warning and it has gone on record so if they get up to those tricks again and it's reported, hopefully they'll get their comeuppance. If we ever find ourselves sharing the river with water skiers again we'll be prepared and have filming equipment to hand.

So glad the database is now safe and will continue, something that valuable just couldn't be lost, Craig Photographed my first boat a couple of times, and the one I own now when previous owners had it, I look forward to our new Custodian running and updating the site, regards Ted
This has solved what was for me a mystery. I didn't know what database was being referred to or who Craig was. However, in 2007 we had a narrow boat built and returned to it one day to find a chap taking photos of it. I'm presuming this was Craig. How does one access this database?

As mentioned in a previous post, While we were going to Oulton Broad last Sunday evening we were subjected to a very unpleasant experience courtesy of a speedboat and the water skier it was towing. As they approached our bow the skier pulled out right across the river and was heading straight for our bow only returning to the other side of the river at the last moment. The wave this caused coupled with the enormous wash given off by the speed boat caused practically everything oin board that was free standing to fall over. We both thought at one stage that the boat was going to turn over. It was seriously frightening. We sustained a nasty chip out of our galley sink. They did this manoeuvre 5 times in total approaching us from the bow and from the stern but the last time was by far the worst. If we had had anybody on board who was frail or infirm the outcome clould have been very serious. Indeed it we had been in a smaller boat I hate to think what could have happened. I thought about it for a couple of days and came to the conclusiuon that I wasn't overreacting and that the the BA should be informed and I phoned them I was put through to s very helpful man whose name I didn't hear properly, He did chase it up and actually spoke to the man at the helm of the boat apparently who denied having even seen us - really? on five occcasions? the point is that apparently without photographic evidence nothing positve can be done. So we are left with a damaged sink and any repair is for us to pay for. I don't have the sort of phone required for this and even if I had had one I would not have been able to use it as I was too busy trying to stay upright on a boat that was being tossed all over the place.

I don't particularly mind the "wandering off course" it'swhat forums tend to do but if a seperate thread could be set up to deal with the issues that have highjacked it it may be a good idea as it is a big subject and deserves it's own space I think, (not Hi-Jinks adventures the other stuff)

I do wonder sometimes if some hire boaters think boating is a contact sport! Some certainly behave as if it is.

I believe a lot of accidents involving hire boats could be avoided if tuition stressed the need to pay close attention to the stern.

I thoroughly agree!
All the same I feel your post is rather spoiled by the almost automatic assumption of "inadequate tuition". As you were a witness to this incident, is there any basis for that?

Thee people!e on this hired boat told us that the only tuition they had received was a fifteen minute video! I rest my case!

We have had for some years a tides clock. It has a fault in that it intermittently stops working and then restarts again. It is battery operated. Nobody seems to be able to repair it. We even took it into the clock hospital in Norwich and they said they were unable to replace the works unit, I think the fact that it's a tides clock comp!icates things . We would very much like to get it going again as it would be very useful now. It would be quite costly to replace - about £160.00 I think, so obviously a repair would be preferable . Does anyone know whether/how this could be achieved?.

The damage to the woodie was purely accidental. It was definitely not the result of carelessness and to castigate the helmsman is very unfair. It was caused by sheer lack of experience and inadequate tuition plus a large dollop of panic. An experienced helmsman would have found it challenging to handle a 45' boat in that wind and that small harbour. Social media has become a menace which is why I have no truck with anything other than this forum. Hirers are essential to the economy and the ethos of the Broads and anyone who thinks that the Broads would be better with just privately owned boats are deluding themselves.

When we heard last week of the expected heatwave and the extreme temperatures expected to come with it we wondered where to go to find a nice breeze. Oulton Broad of course so off we set on Sunday morning. Arriving at Somerleyton bridge we were surprised to find a headroom of only 8'. High water there is given as being 8'6" we need 8'3" So we moored up and waited for about 21/2 hours, arriving at Oulton at about 5.45pm. On the way there we encountered a speedboat and water skier, who seemed to have one ambition - to sink us! They quite literally aimed straight for us 5 times! Everything in the boat that wasn't fixed fell over and we now have a nasty chip in the enamel on our sink. At one point I really thought we were going to turnover. It was extremely scary. We arrived at Oulton a bit shaken and very grateful to be in one piece. We enjoyed our stay there so much we extended our intended 2 nights to 3. There was a bit of drama during Monday afternoon when a very long hire boat got into difficulties coming into the harbour and caused extensive damage to a much loved woodie, to the loud and extreme fury of it's owner(perfectly understandable). However all was sorted out and a peaceful conclusion was arrived at. The hire boat in question was with another similar boat which moored next to us. All the occupants of both boats were lovely people and the helmsman who had caused the damage was mortified. We just hope it hasn't ruined his holiday which had only started yesterday! Moored the other side of us was Pipedreams and it was very nice to meet them, in fact we were surrounded by some very nice people exceptionally so and we were very glad we had decided to extend our stay. We were all still out on the pontoon chatting and drinking wine till after 11.OO pm. It was really enjoyable. Got back to our mooring about 12.30 today and it ain't half hot!.

My daughter is 57 and my 2 granddaughters 26and 23 respectively. I stopped counting my birthdays a very long time ago! I think the peace and tranquility that often comes as part and parcel of boating and which we love translates as terminal boredom to them,

Those of you whose children/grandchildren still want to spend time on the boat, make the most of it. Both our kids and grandkids have outgrown it now and we miss them. especially the grandkids when they were little they were so much fun. Fond memories of Mollie aged about 4 at the helm of our Fairline Mirage and making a pretty good fist of it {with Granddad's surreptitious supervision} waving enthusiastically to passing craft. It seemed as if one minute we were shopping in Toys R Us and the next we were springing for prom dresses!

HiJohn,
We have thought of that but didn't know whether our regulator would be compatible.

I used to smoke about 30 Rothman international a day. I used to keep a lighter and a packet of cigs in my bag, ditto kitchen, lounge , bathroom, bedoom and ditto in both cars! Tony used to nag me to give up constantly. I had a close friend with whom I used to spend a lot of time. She was a single mum to 2 and didn't have an easy life. She met a man who was perfect for her but who was vehemently opposed to smoking and said there was no future for them while she smoked, so she promised to give up on New Years Eve 1989. I really wanted her to have this chance of happiness so I also gave up to make it easier on her. I've never smoked since. She failed to give up and he married her anyway!
