  1. Thought these looked good and picked one up today. Having found our sump plugs almost in accessible and impossible to put a tray under previous oil changes have been via vacuum pump. There were still a dozen left at 12:30pm today, so may have all gone by now.

p.s. You will need a bigger box to keep it in.

  2. Hi Alan, Ruth is intolerant too and will pay for it the next day if she has too much. Like the idea of soda water and will give it a go. Biggest prob is getting the oven hot enough. Boat oven gets to about mark 6 to 7 at best.

We do struggle to find FreeFrom food that doesn't break the bank. Sausage wise we usually buy Black Farmers. 10 for £3.50 in the Co op...£3.00 for 6 in Sainsburys:cry:.

    Colin and Ruth cheers

  3. Is this not something the BA or Fire Service could help with? I feel sorry for the owners and wonder if they were living onboard as they will have lost almost everything. We only have one small portable pump here. Our pump out system here is the same pump as the yacht station and it can be quickly reconfigured to pump boats out in this situation using the pump out points along our quay. Come on, BA and Fire Service. Ideal opportunity for a bit of rescue practice and goodwill building.

  4. The idea of adding even more to the toll is a nonrunner. The vast majority of boats are privately owned and are used for a few weeks per year and as many weekends as can be managed. Most will have access to a skip in th yard thy rent their mooring from and only occasionally will need to dump rubbish when away for a week or more. Much better to pay for what you use other wise the occasional user pays for the big user. My other boat,Lady Linda, has not left our mooring in Thorpe for over a year because we are completely refitting her. I already pay for rubbish collection here so why should I subsidise the big waste makers.

pay for what you use I say.

  5. Hi Dave, reading below it could be argued that a private vessel has no classification  but further down it has the usual 'cover everything else clause' as trade waste. So I was right in as much it's the EU that are to blame:naughty:

    goodnight all

    Colin.....Zzzzzzzzz

  6. So it would seem that according to the BA document that the Local Authorities have decide that all boat waste is to be classed as commercial unless the boat is Residential! I'm glad to see that they are resisting taking responsibility for this and passing on the cost to toll payers.

This is not going to be resolved over night so it's up to us how much waste  we are going to cart around. Food wise I've always repackaged stuff for the fridge/freezer, I can get more in. Beer in cans canbe crushed when empty and a litre bottle of gin goes a long way, tonic in cans. Dry goods quite often come in cardboard packaging which you can feed your failing BBQ with the remaining plastic can be kept to an absolute minimum hopefully to one small rubbish bag. The hire boats can all dispose their rubbish at other federation yards.

Its all to easy to create waste.

  7. Siddy, any waste you generate while on your hire boat is classed as trade waste!!!

e.g. You come to Thorpe in a hire boat, you moor and go to the cafe and buy two coffees and a couple of cakes. You sit on the benchs on the green and can then dispose of them in the bins provided. Had you taken them back to your hire boat and drank and stuffed yourself in the cockpit you cannot then get off your boat and put them in the bins.

Now if you buy your boat and come to Thorpe, or anywhere, you can consume your coffees etc on the green or on your boat and lawfully use the rubbish bins....but the council won't like it!

added note ...I wish I could type as fast as you lot

  8. Just been sent this! So I'm going to blame the EU and the councils will use it as their excuse.

    STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS

    2012 No. 811

    ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, ENGLAND AND WALES

The Controlled Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2012

    Made - - - - 12th March 2012 Laid before Parliament 15th March 2012 Laid before the National Assembly for Wales15th March 2012 Coming into force - - 6th April 2012

1.—(1)These Regulations may be cited as the Controlled Waste (England and Wales)

    Regulations 2012.
    (2) They extend to England and Wales.
    (3) They come into force on 6th April 2012.

    Interpretation

    2. In these Regulations—

    “the Act” means the Environmental Protection Act 1990;

    “Directive waste” means anything that—

    (a) is waste within the meaning of Article 3(1) of Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on waste and repealing certain Directives(e);

  9. Dave, that is exactly how it was explained to me. Interestingly the bins here on River Green are labeled 'No Boat Waste' so the hire boats can't use them( but they do) but I could use them as my waste is domestic. I don't need to as we have 3 very large waste bins on the island anyway, 2 general and 1 recycling.

Dave, do you know if this reclassification was due to an EU directive on waste or have I been misinformed?

    Colincheers

  10. If I was to pay to dispose of my rubbish would that then make it trade waste. If that is the case couldn't we have waste bins/compactors that could be activated with a disposable card like the electric cards we use. Hire companies could then provide some with every hire and private boats could purchase them too if we wished. I would rather pay 50p or £1 to dispose of a bag of rotting, wasp attracting rubbish than store it on my back deck for a week in August. The thought of having to travel any distance with a weeks worth of rubbish in the boot is just not on.

This idea probably won't happen as it will be too costly to setup. Anyone got any good ideas other than trying to force the councils to do their job.

  11. I think that with hire craft of 8,10 and12 berth who will be creating a considerable amount of waste we are going to see a lot of black sacks floating along the river that have accidentally fallen off the the back. The reclassification of waste is the major cause here and won't go away. It does make me think just what the advantages are of being in the EU.

  12. The guy concerned is fine, I have been talking with him this evening. The injury was an existing trauma for which he is waiting for the NHS to put right. The emergency services responded well,we had 3 fire tenders including their boats plus a good number of police. My only criticism would be the time it took to launch their boat, about 30 mins from arrival.

i gather that having had a couple in The Buck the guy decided to have a paddle through the bridge. Having not seen him return a concerned islander phoned 999 and from there the incident evolved!

Very glad to say no one went in the water otherwise it could have been fatal at this time of year.

  13. 9:45pm. 10deg list still well aground. Hopefully it will star to rise now if Brundall is coming up. Had a similar tide at Brundall about 15 years ago when we were at John Brooms yard. We were moored on the river front together with a beautiful wooden cruiser that was listing so badly the owner wouldn't stay to watch, worried his cleats might fail and the boat roll over. Glad to say everything was ok but very touch and go.

  14. Hi Ian, hope you stay safe too, some nasty weather about. Very windy here in Norwich and low tide was 10:30 this morning. 4 hours later and we are still very low. As I'm sure you know the flood takes about 5 1/4 hour to high tide here so with just over n hour to go this is how it looks.

It will be worth a look at Eastport to see just how mad these tides are at the moment.

forgot to add pic of boat behind, not ours and if you count the rungs on the ladder. 6 = just over 9 feet.
