  1. Naughty John putting this is as a joke...albeit it works for me :default_biggrin:

I can laugh at my side of the debate too.
I do realise how absolutely ridiculous I’ll look if JM et al are right and how much back peddling and apologising I’ll have to do.
But I know I’m right so that’ll never happen .... or will it?
  2. I can’t speak for the BA (or anyone else) but it did make me smile.
Mainly because I can see some of you spitting your coffee out and shouting at your phone

Hopefully this is with the TOS but I think some of this is like the split within some religions. We almost all agree on almost everything about the Broads. But a very few things cause a big divide. Let’s hope we’re a bit more adult than some religious zealots.
    We’re better together

  3. This is a very much tongue in cheek post and not meant to offend anyone.

If you have a propensity for anger or stress and think the Broads shouldn’t ever be called a National Park in any context probably best you stop reading now

I’ve just noticed that both Apple maps and Google maps call the Broads a National Park.

So in all likelihood your phone which you bought is telling you the Broads is a National Park.

When you’re in the Broads your device that you handed over your hard earned cash for thinks you’re in a National Park and is telling other people you’re in a National Park.

How does this make you feel?

Did you write angry letters to Google and Apple? Did they respond.

At least with most modern phones having voice recognition you can tell the phone in the angriest possible terms it isn’t a National Park.

If you’ve read this and are now going to post that I’m a trouble maker, doing Google and Apple a disservice please don’t bother, it’s a joke. Maybe not a good one but it made me chuckle when I saw the maps.

  4. Even if there was none of the original?

If that isn’t true then what about us?
Every cell in our bodies is replaced at least every six years isn’t it?
Does that make us Trigger’s broom?

  5. Thanks very much everyone for taking the time to reply.
I’m genuinely surprised at the number of different products you like.
I was expecting one or two options and a lot of people agreeing.
Is anyone crossing Breydon tomorrow? I thought I’d give the boat a bit of a clean then blow the cobwebs off.

  6. The Repps one always seems to be all over the place but it may be exactly that local variability you are looking for.
Historic data must be possible - is there a met office archive. Data is $$$ though these days.

Hmmm, the Repps one is right next to a big pump so maybe that’s having an impact. I’m not modelling that
  7. JohnK the Acle gauge I find the “cleanest” data.

The Repps gauge is about 100 meters from me so we’ll be starting with that one . I can see the height if I don’t believe it.
Historic predicted and tide data I think I can access. But I’m not sure where to get historic weather data (wind speed, direction and air pressure). Ideally data tables.
    Any ideas?
  8. John - I admire you!
But me I would look out of the window, say its up a bit or down a bit, then jump in my boat and have a potter around one of unquestionably the best bit of the Broads!!
    Sod the App....!!!!!

Haha, I like technology too much. Why look out of the window when I can check the camera?
I genuinely enjoy creating that sort of stuff. One of the most interesting jobs I picked up in the last couple of years was to data model the chemistry in a 50,000 tonne doughnut shaped pile of gypsum. I fully accept how sad that sounds. But it keeps me out of trouble and pays for toys
  9. I’m thinking I’ll start with tides (just predictions read from t’internet)
Then add flows maybe with a graphic to show what rivers are flowing which way.
    Then add gauges.
Then based on gauge data (read from t’internet) try and predict errors comparing gauge to actual (heights and times) when looking at wind speed, direction and air pressure.
I know it won’t be perfect (probably not even close) but I enjoy that sort of mental challenge.
I did try app building but it’s much too like “proper” programming for me so I’m now thinking Excel - possibly via office 365 to make it shareable.

  10. To all those posting who think we are an unfriendly bunch and clearly have “beef” about something

I don’t think those two things are necessarily linked.
Some people may think some people are unfriendly here and therefore consider the forum unfriendly.
Some people may think because most people are friendly here the forum is friendly.
Are people not allowed those opinions (in your opinion)?
  11. Anyone who understands and can predict the tides on the Broads could make a lot of money!
We are just coming off springs at the moment so normal tides are at their highest anyway. Yesterday there was a fairly deep depression over middle England which was causing the southerly wind.
What causes the surge tides is when a storm goes across the coast of Norway and then stays there for a bit, causing strong north west winds which funnel the water down the North Sea where it is constricted as it gets to the Channel and so piles up on the East Anglian coast. If this happens during spring tides then you will have floods.
On this occasion, I believe it is caused more by the heavy rainfall over the county which is trying to get away, down from the headwaters of the rivers, but is being held up by the high tides. This more like the Somerset Levels, if you like.

    Thanks Vaughan,
It would be fascinating to have a few tidal gauges dotted around the broads and compare actual to predictions and try and predict the deviations.
Especially if you compare Gorelston predicted to actual (for which I think there might be a gauge) and see how much extra deviation there is on the broads.
    Or I’m very sad

I keep thinking about writing a smartphone app to try to do tides on the broads (predicted only to start with) but my programming ability falls well short.
I might try to create an Excel sheet to do it. That’s definitely doable.
  12. Can't agree with the conclusion that this place is losing its friendly aspect. I have considerable sympathy for the moderators on this one because I remain convinced that there is a faction within our midst that jumps from forum to forum, determined to create disharmony, for whatever reason.

I can’t agree with that conclusion
It seems to me there are passionate people on both sides of each debate (as you’d hope there would be).
Some of the people on both sides could choose their words more carefully.

I think as well one person’s banter is sometimes another person’s antagonism.
If I put NP at the end of every Broads mention I’d think that’s quite funny. But I know a lot of people who wouldn’t
  13. By posting the revelation on a site where their posting privileges have not been restricted, as has recently been done by the member whose situation has given rise to this part of the discussion.

I would not necessarily advocate that course of action, though, as it could give rise to one forum/FB group being discussed on another, which is rarely a satisfactory way of proceeding. But I hope it answers your question, JohnK.

Based on grendel’s post I was assuming there was a way they could do it on here.

That would be the ideal wouldn’t it?

Or are we just black balling people and never allowed to mention their name again?

Does every post get removed with any mention of anyone not here (banned or otherwise)?

If you name someone banned do you get banned too?

  14. John, please don't take this personally but I have read that several times and I am afraid I don't understand it.

Sorry to be cryptic but I’m trying to not get my post removed or be banned.
I don’t think I understand what rules are being applied right now.
