Mardi Gras wasn’t there when we passed a couple of times recently. That’s the sedan that has been moored on the bank just below Acle for many years. Any good?

Absolutely correct. Always seemed such a shame. Been moored in the same spot for many many years. Never seen it used or moved. Over the years it has gradually shown signs of wear and neglect. Torn and eventually missing covers. Such a nice and really smart looking boat when I first saw it at least 14 years ago.

The mooring spot has also stood out because the boat was moored on its own along a very rough piece of steel piled mooring with no proper quay heading. Probably one of the last places I would have moored the boat if it had been mine. Almost like the farmer who owned that stretch was a friend and let them moor there for nothing.

We have often passed the boat and wondered how it came to be there and why it never seemed to have any life on board, or ever get used.

Been there so long it seemed to have become part of the Broads furniture if you know what I mean. Passed a couple of times recently and was surprised, no shocked to see it had gone.

I was thinking of Reg Morgan's Mississippi river boat, but I don't think that goes under Acle bridge. Is it in for a re-fit?

Not the thing I was thinking off, I believe it is still out and about doing trips at the moment. Lets move the bar slightly lower, below Horning waterworks and Stracey Arms.

I have a childhood recollection of passing under a bridge on the broads and paying the bridgekeeper by putting half a crown or whatever the charge was, into a large net he held out as we passed. Was that the bridge?

Would this be the bridge you are thinking off? Interesting to see the new one under construction in the background

Since the 1970's a few 'things' have gone missing, on the River Bure between Stracey Arms and Wroxham bridge. Jack Powles, Ernest Collins, Smiths, Porter & Haylett, Southgates Main yard, Wilds, Ferry Boatyard and Chumley & Hawke, to name just a few of the old yards that are gone and sadly missed...

Mostly replaced by quick build, ordinary looking holiday homes or private moorings, a great pity really.

Very true, but the item I'm thinking off has gone missing this year!

Now the thread you started turned a little fractious so let's not go down that avenue barring the relevant aspect to this thread "When is a person "Drunk".?

I think this thread is starting to go round in circles! You ask for opinions on what constitutes a drunk, and those have been given by various people, including myself. You have also asked direct questions about what definition the ranger should have gone by, to which I referenced the byelaw, which received a friendly warning if you like, which has got me feeling like I'm walking on egg shells here. You've now gone full circle back to really just wanting an opinion so having already answered that, I'm out of this thread. :default_icon_wave:

In law, John, the only definition I can think of is that of a blood test as used by the police. In the meantime perhaps BA Rangers should carry breathalisers.

But what limit would they apply?

16th is the first day of the season

Aah but the 15th is when many get the strimmers and lawn mowers out and start cutting back their patch of turf in preparation for the open season, thus shattering the peace and quiet on the 15th, he says rapidly back tracking.

Is it the old boot on one of the posts on the lower Bure?  We went past there twice at end of May but I didn't particularly look for it

    Griff

Thinking about it, I don't remember it being there when I went past either. I believe the BA often stick an old boot up there from time to time to keep up the tradition, so It will probably be back. Something that has almost become part of the furniture of The Broads scene is what I'm thinking off. It's not a piece of furniture by the way :-)

A ranger came under fire not so very long ago for sending "a dayboat full of drunken people" on their way. Apparently it seems, he should have stopped them and done something about it. So I wondered... Maybe he didn't think they were drunk, by his definition.

What definition should he have gone by?

So many questions were raised in my mind that I wondered what other members thought. Especially as some members have such strong views on the subject.

Which is why when I made my first post on this thread I said the following,

"I guess the more pertinent question here would be what constitutes being under the influence of drink to such an extent as to be incapable of taking proper control of the vessel?

I think we have all seen sober people that appear to be incapable of taking proper control of the vessel!

And that then poses the question, what is taking proper control of the vessel?

Having more than 35 micrograms of alcohol for every 100 millilitres of breath is very specific and with the right equipment enforceable, not so sure how you legally quantify being incapable of taking proper control of the vessel?

I chose some of those words, no copied some of those words very carefully because they were lifted from the relevant BA byelaw. To answer one of your questions, that is the definition he should have gone by, but as I think a few of us agreed, there are some sober people who are incapable of taking proper control of a vessel. The police at least have a prescribed limit when it comes to drink driving.

Is it the peace and tranquility missing since silly season started?

It may have gone for now, and I'm sure on the 15th is due to get even worse, but come Winter the peace will return, so sorry but not the thing I'm thinking off. I will add it is a physical thing, not a feeling or sentiment.

Is it the famous light in the old boat moored in a chalet at Potter? I couldn't see it when I went past a few weeks ago.

Last time I went past there a couple of weeks ago it was still there, but someone had changed the bulb to a newer style. Again not the one I was thinking off.

I'm exactly the same, Howard. I get the week swapping thing but it's just not the same and the thought of being stuck with weeks I don't want fills me with dread. I think Southern Crusader has it right and I believe Ranworth Breeze has a rotation system which could be OK but both boats are too high for where I'd want to cruise.

Anything that doesn't make it under Beccles old bridge is I suspect going to be a problem for NN. A trip to Beccles without venturing to The Locks Inn. :default_sad:
