What exactly did I say which is supposed to be aggressive?

I doubt the owners of Horning Ferry, The New Inn, Martham Boats, Ferry Marina, Richardsons, etc think there are silver linings in much right now. A poor season this year could prove to be a death knell for their businesses - particularly if an incoming Labour government chooses to rob funding or increase corporate taxes to address social issues.

Which part of Norfolk was it that you were born in?

Most things have been. Go take a look at the state of Hoveton around the Three Horseshoes moorings, then tell me why you think coming on here singing Packman's praises is justified from the standpoint of anyone who cares about Broadland.

I agree with what you say about the awful consequences that some businesses may experience with these floods. However I don't understand why I have seen nothing in this debate from Richardson's CEO albeit he is part of the B.A. and on the Navigation Commitee, or have I missed something? Surely as the biggest hire boat operator they have some clout.

Photos taken last Friday.  It was no different on Wednesday, but with recent rainfall (Wednesday and yesterday), could even be worse.

Thank you everyone for your replies, especially Mouldy for the photos which say it all. My boat is the furthest one in the second photo.

Thought I would check on the boat at Horning this morning only from Salhouse, bad idea what with the road works on Norwich Rd Wroxham,  water on the road near the boat yard then ferry road Horning impassable  ( Tractor and waders over 3ft deep  in parts ) tractor and trailer taking cars from ferry marina to dry land at the top of the road. I haven’t seen it quite as bad for a few years.

I'm hoping to get down to the boat next week, as I haven't seen her all winter. Does anyone have an update on the flooding, particularly around Horning Pleasurecraft and The Ferry Inn?

BK were the third company I called requesting a quote, the 1st was honest and said unless I took the windows to him he wasn't really interested as too busy - quite a character although I won't repeat his advice on life after divorce!! :default_shocked1animated:   The 2nd was hard to get hold of, tried to arrange a couple of dates but never returned calls so I gave up.

Paul from BK replied pretty much straightaway, visited the boat and gave a reasonable quote.  My boat is actually the first one in the our work section where he rebuilt my 2 skylights, currently waiting for the saloon windows to be replaced with new as they are in a sorry state.

They have been in regular contact throughout and so far the work and advice has been excellent so I can recommend them.

I notice on their BK website that the boats featured are all Shadow Boats (Swancraft) and the yard photo is theirs. You mention Paul you spoke to, is this Paul Crampton? If so that's Shadow /Swancraft, in which case you would be in very safe hands of a highly knowledgeable perfectionist. Paul built our boat in 2008 and has maintained her from new. A beautiful boat that I wouldn't swap for any other.

The charge is 77p a unit, which is what they are buying in at.

It is also the cost they are paying for there own substantial consumption.

Like many, they seem to have fixed at the peak of the increases but at least have held off passing on the new rate.

Fortunately I loaded up a couple hundred pounds worth before the increase. Hopefully the fixed contract is a short one.

It is a price I am willing and able to pay as I really like my mooring.

Our charge went up on 1st October 2023 to 30p per unit no standing charge.

Having just found out the unit charge has increased to 77p a unit,  up from 60p a unit, what are others paying.

The marina where we moor has jumped up as 4 years ago the marina owner negotiated a 4 year fixed contract with the electricity company which we have had the benefit of, but this has now expired and the electricity company has increased the rate. There is no mark up on the cost to us, it is charged at the same rate that the marina owner pays.

Yep! Exactly the same! I got the impression he didn't like hire boats, maybe he just liked customers to arrive  in a Merc or BMW!!! :default_norty:

I'm sorry to hear that NN. Speaking as I've found, I've phoned on a few occasions in the past and booked a mooring with no problem. Suspect I'd have no problem if I'd had the audacity to bowl up in my Vauxhall either.:4_joy: Let's hope the new owners are boat friendly and you have no problems in the future.

Where can I find the details of the proposals please.

I have just moved on to Windows 10 and am having difficulty in finding anything

It's on Horning Pleasurecraft's Facebook page

  9. Use to enjoy the Maltsters, but stopped going there having tried it a few times after Roy left, when it was a proper pub.

After the so called refurbishment in modern 'cold' decor, it was laid out like a canteen with young unwelcoming staff. Totally uninviting to call in for a few drinks and a chat.

The terrace out the front was filthy and hadn't seen a jetwash in years and tables needed replacing.

It use to be our regular call in from our Horning mooring, probably 15 times a year, but haven't been there since Packman started charging for our 'free' moorings.

I’ve just looked at the Barnes Webcam on my phone, so not the clearest or largest picture. I was mighty shocked to see the height gauge reading something that hasn’t been seen for weeks. It wasn’t clear enough to see the numbers so I just counted down and got to about the 8ft digit or more!
Can’t be right I thought, especially as the reflection of the bridge itself is like an almond shape rather than roundish, so I waited for it to come round again and realised the water is so mirror clear that I was reading the reflection. In fact so still that I couldn’t see where the water actually is.
    I’ve never seen that before.

I think it’s actually reading about 5ft but even looking on a larger iPad screen it’s difficult. Wierd.

I took this picture via BB webcam at 8:50 this morning, being the low water springs time (lowest low of the fortnightly tide cycle). It looks like about 5'8" to me.Screenshot_20231130-090018_Gallery.thumb.jpg.600ed708ec8cc412ee7063af715f1fa8.jpg

I remember those days as a child, when Prince Phillip stayed at the pub. Not sure that's anything to be proud of for the Norfolk wildlife Trust though. As I remember, by the time he and his party left, there weren't a lot of ducks left!

  12. I read about this on my Google News this morning and so pleased to see that it may reopen.

The article said that it closed due to a drop in trade, which wasn't helped by so few boats now visiting. Perhaps the Norfolk Wildlife Trust would be a sufficiently respected organisation to lobby the B.A. to dredge the Lower Bure to try and get some more air draught under PH bridge. That is, if the NWT felt so inclined!

In August I saw myself the state some hirers leave their hire boat in , not only was the sink full of dirty crockery and pots and pans but half eaten takeaways left in the microwave including up the sides of said microwave, the fridge half full of uneaten supplies including a yoghurt which had spilled and no attempt made to wipe down the spillage ,bed linen soiled and dumped in the wet room , makes one wonder what their homes must be like .

    Incredible. Do they get charged!

We hired for 8 years from Rico's, before we purchased 'Bon Bon'. The boat was always returned spotlessly clean inside and out and we would get up early on the last day to do this. I wouldn't mind betting that we were in the vast majority of hirer's. However there are some awful people about, as we all experience from time to time on the Broads. Luckily they are in the vast minority, as most hirer's we meet a nice good people.

Well I must confess I won’t be doing the job myself. Much as I’d like to, I have no skills.
I could blame that on us girls not being allowed to do woodwork, electronics, metalwork or technical drawing at school

The same reason I let my wife do all the cooking, having been deprived in the 50's and 60's of domestic science lessons. (Mind you, that was a bit of luck).

Am I right that there are different size impellers?
If so, the best thing I suppose is to do this one day when the chandlers is open, take it out, take it to the chandlers for the new one and buy a spare while there.
I could have a go today, seeing as I’m sort of stuck inside with this weather, just to find it’s location but if I do something wrong, I’ll be stuck down fleet dyke, so I’m not risking that.

If you are laying up for the winter, then it's best to change it at the beginning of the season, otherwise it sits static all winter with one fin bent over in the pump housing which is narrower at the water inlet to make a good seal.

    Hi Katie

I gave the engine make and serial number to Sonny Boulter and he looked it up on his computer and sold me one accordingly. He was correct too.

It's always good to have a couple of electric cards just in case but most of the time the posts have enough left on them to see you through the night.

One kind person left £10.40p at Acle last week, that has to be a record, or is it?

How on earth can this happen?

If people want "things to do" send them to Butlins. If they want to chill, relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility the Broads has to offer, then they've come to the right place.

How right you are. Where else is there in the UK that you are so relaxed that you wave to complete strangers when passing by.

Check with your mobile provider and phone capability, some allow regular calls and texts via wifi, I get that on my cheapy lebara sim so when there's no signal anywhere with wifi gives me all options.

If anyone can tell me how to do this via wifi, I would be grateful. I am with EE and have a Samsung A70, My wifi is with Tesco, who use the o2 network and has an iPhone 14

Update on the phone signal/temporary mast

HPC met with the company which will do the construction on the temporary mast for O2 last week, on the recreation ground. Unfortunately, this site is not considered viable and O2 will be housing this mast on a farm, just on the offskirts of Horning (plan B).

All of Horning will still be covered by this; the signal strength is not decreaed due to being outside of the center of Horning. Those on various contracts (Vodafone etc.) - those network providers are coming in with O2 on this temporary mast.

The building works will commence shortly, and the mast will be live around 26th September.

Thank you for the update, that sounds good and reception should be better than before as the old mast was at Neatishead.

To make calls in the Horning area at the moment, we have to return to our marina berth at Horning Pleasurecraft, where we have excellent wifi. However, this does restrict calls to friends and family via WhatsApp, we can't make calls to landlines.
