What boat to replace her with? It seemed like it would be a more modern version of what we already had. As PaulNs' beautiful boat was not available at that time it looked like we would be making changes to our Sally.

Wow Rod she looks great especially the Branded dashboard. Look forward to having s look next time we meet up. Thank you for the kind words about Bon Bon.

So this afternoon we had lunch at the boathouse.Very nice indeed.

Seeing the location, is that what was 'The Eels Foot' if so, as a child I went there regularly with my parents, until one night when we were there and I seem to remember a police raid which I think was due to a lock in and children on the premises and it got closed down.:default_sad:

  3. Thank you all you experts, much appreciated. I think I will change it just before de-winterising in the spring as it's 2½ years old and we spend about 16 to 18 weeks a year on the boat.

It is the original pump, the engine has only done 2,600 hours and externally at least, looks like new.

According to Beta the impeller is a 6 bladed Johnson ref: 09-810B-01. They had full details of where it was supplied to (Swancraft) and had a picture of my engine on the test bed before it was painted, even though it is 14 years old.

Griff, Meantime, Marge&Parge, Vaughan all great advice (and yes Vaughan you were the expert I had in mind). Thank you all again.

    Paul

  4. I currently have the seacocks turned off, with the raw water system full of antifreeze premixed and I want to change the impeller as it's 2½ years old. If I take the cover plate off, will I lose all the antifreeze or just a little and would it matter in any case. Also if this leaves an air pocket local to the impeller, does it self prime when the seacocks are opened and the engine started. The engine is a Beta 38 HP BV1505 (page from manual attached).

Another thing I've wondered, is how does the closed circuit water system pump and circulate to the heat exchanger to let the raw water do it's job and is any form of maintenance ever required.

Looking forward to hearing from you experts out there, particularly the one who's name begins with V.

I am not sure if there has been a disagreement but I can not purchase books anymore useing any of my 3 Samsung Tablets or my Samsung S phone. I can however download to tablet once purchased on the Kindle.

Conversely I recently read a travel book with YouTube links. The kindle was not supported anymore so had to watch on the tablet.

Doesn't seem a problem, I downloaded a book yesterday to my Samsung Galaxy, online from Amazon Books.

Yes I do miss it. I was hoping to get a new one for Christmas, but Pozzick related expenses (such as having to buy a trailer for the car earlier this month) have rather constrained our spending this Christmas. At least I still have my iPad, and means to charge it whilst we are on the boat.

I have been using kindle for years and I read about 1 novel per week, sometimes a bit more. However, I don't have the hardware being referred to as I use my phone which has the kindle app on it and operates the same as the kindle hardware. The phone has a fairly large screen as I purchased it with the kindle in mind (Samsung Galaxy A70). It has the advantage that it is always in my pocket, so can read whenever, bus, train etc. I loved the AR books as a child, you have all spurred me on to download them and read again.

Think Vaughan has as much knowledge. :default_biggrin:

Although this map is 1888-1913 it still shows Horning probably as it almost was?

    https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=15.0&lat=52.70206&lon=1.46907&layers=6&right=ESRIWorld

Just opposite the Petersfield (as was) there is still some lagoons and I can imagine that as the willow pattern harbour as there were/are wooden bridges, the pines of the Petersfield - all a bit willow pattern? I've seen an old aerial photos online but can't find it at the moment!

Broadland Memories has loads of photos of Horning but the Francis Frith archive is pretty impressive

This one might look uninteresting but the concrete pavement is still there - you walk on it when you go to the Chinese which is the building in the corner.  The cottages are still there  but the boatsheds which say HT Percival is the development where I lived between 1970 and 1981 etc.

Thank you LizG, I've never seen that before, I'm referring to your first web link showing then and now, with the double cursor when the mouse is moved. Very informative.

  8. Thank you all for your kind wishes and a Happy Christmas to the team as well.

You do a fantastic job and I'm always impressed by the way the website is constructed and the time the team put into it. It's a brilliant members forum, keep up the good work!

  9. Like so many, I have ben at home and worrying about the boat which I haven't seen since the end of October, hope to get down there once Christmas and New Year is over.

When I left the boat, I did what I thought would be best and hope that's all OK, any expert advice if I missed anything will be appreciated. Carried out the following:

Turned off raw water inlet valves 2No. as I have 2 interconnected weed filters. Ran engine pouring in the pink antifreeze mix into one of the weed filters, until my wife called that the exhaust water was 'running pink', the quickly stopped engine then topped up antifreeze.

    Diesel tank Full.

Water tank as empty as pump could get it. Taps opened. Shower head hose unscrewed from bottom of mixer valve with tap open to drain valve.

A bit of antifreeze in outlets to shower tray, toilet, basin and sink.

3 tubular heaters connected to shore power via thermostat set to come on if temperature drops to 3 degrees C. One heater in main saloon with seat backrest removed to expose water tank. Engine cover removed (mid engine shaft drive) with one heater adjacent to engine and the 3rd in the 'heads'.

Hope that should be ok and that all be well when I get there. Not sure what else boat yards do if you pay for professional winterising.

Hi Pauln your battery's are not wired up for best performance see di above. John

    Hi Annev

Batteries are connected as 2 banks of 2 and the battery isolator allows me to switch between Bank 1, Bank 2 or Both, as installed when the boat was built by Swancraft. Batteries are AGM 230 Ah each, so plenty of power. Not sure why this format is inefficient but would be a major job to change. However I accept any advice, but not sure what you recommend I should be doing.

One of my projects this year is to upgrade the battery bank, and look at the charging system on the boat.

everything has worked fine through the summer once I’d replaced the domestic batteries.

5 day cruising no problem with no shore power.

    but,,,,,,

the batteries are stuck in any gap.

    the wiring is a mess.

so a centralised bank of batteries and simplified wiring is the order of the day.

ill be upgrading to 3 domestic 1 starter.

all of the wiring is getting on a bit so I’ll rewire all of the supply side of things.

all battery +ve side of things is currently brown.

this In itself does my swede as in my world brown is earth/return.

    anyways.

I couldn’t get any pics as the light was fading, and all the electrics associated to the charging/engine are virtually inaccessible, which, again is a big issue for me.

    question #1

im guessing this is the rectifier/diode

Looks like you are planning to revamp your battery storage and wiring. No doubt you are aware but you have to consider the BSS requirements for your next inspection (battery section attached). This varies for lead acid batteries or sealed AGM and Gel types. Also location, engine bay or seperate. Attached are photos of my battery storage box, sorry it's a bit out of focus.

The batteries are sealed AGM and in October this year I replaced all 4 with sealed Rolls S12 230 AGM's (ouch). In the photo the lid is off which is on the left of the photo and the engine starter battery can just be seen at the bottom of the photo with it's lid on. You can also see the flange of the vent going to the hull fitting.

I also use a Sterling intelligent charger which I would recommend, however, the charge rate needs to be set via the dip switches according to the battery type, Lead Acid, AGM or Gel, details attached.

Sorry if you know all this already, but maybe of help. Hope all goes well.

  12. Personally, I believe that as part of the Broads License (Toll) the BA should require everyone to provide details of their permanent mooring.

More and more boats, private and hire have shore power facilities and there is a much higher demand for the limited power posts that are available. I don't consider it's right the these limited facilities should be 'hogged' by continuous cruisers .

Controversial probably, but thats my view.

Thank you for that MM, as we only visit at weekends during the winter and we see the same boats moored up over the weekend and then again subsequent weekends it certainly gave us the impression that they had not departed at all .

I know the larger vessel you say moors between the reeds and the staithe on a rotating basis and I have no problem with his alternating 24hr moorings , it is no different to that of the much missed Graham (Calypso) who always “played within the rules” between Horning and Stalham and never exceeded his 24hr permissions.

The Freeman , I know the BA are well aware of and they have been told there is a mechanical problem with the boat that means it cannot move under its own power and as such the BA has requested to be kept appraised of ongoing repairs , not that any seem to be ongoing ???

Your stating of the fact that Tuesday there were only two vessels moored on the green means I must apologise if any of the boats I mistakenly accused read this forum and felt they were being unjustly treated.

    Hi Simon

I think you mean 'between Horning and Ranworth'

  14. Last year at about this time we went to Potter Heigham and found exactly the same problem. The two electric posts wer full with 'permanent' moorers. One even had a winter cover over it. We moored further along and no one seemed to be on the boats hogging the best spots, during the day and night!

Based on what they've done in the past they'll keep the names. They did so with Swancraft and more recently with their acquisitions. I'll be interested to see whether they keep the pale blue colour scheme.

Richardsons did change the name of the Viking 31 (Alpha 31) they bought, from Mamma Mia to Bella Donna. This seemed an odd choice to me, as although Meryl Streep played the star role in Mamma Mia as 'Donna' and so Bella Donna is Beautiful Donna, Belladonna is also the poisonous plant known as Deadly Nightshade!

Just remember to take cash as they don't accept cards (or at least didn't when we last had a pump out there)

The same with Shadow Boats (Swancraft) that I mentioned earlier, they don't take cards either.

I suppose the only good thing to come from this is there may be another facility for Diesel and Pump Out in the area as an alternative to the other one.

There does seem to be a bit of a shortage in that section of The Yare.

Silverline were not available for this last season when we called them to enquire.

Does anyone know if this will be the case or not?

    Hi Rod

There is a diesel, pump out and water facility next door to Silverline at Shadow Boats (aka Swancraft), which we have often used when on the south broads. Our boat was built there. Best to phone in advance though.
