    Friday 16th August

Another peaceful night on board, not up quite so early but were still crying by about 7:30am. Back across Rockland Broad which was beautifully serene and up Short Dyke. Carried on from there til Reedham where we had to first wait for the ferry to cross and then the warning light at the bridge to say it would be opening in 3 mins so we held fast til it opened, let the boats through from the other side before preceding on our way.

We cruised down or should it be up? The New Cut where we passed Lightening, I didn't have my camera ready so unfortunately only managed a shot from behind, we did wave to whoever was on board.

On past Somerleyton where Moonlight Shadow was moored, did manage a photo there and again gave them a wave!

We decided to head for the Waveney River Centre (Fair Prince 2 was moored here) for water and showers and then on to Beccles. The intention at Beccles was to moor up, go and get provisions and then head back for a mooring on the river, but the weather had turned again and so we decided we would stop here overnight.

Having chatted to the Harbour Master and paid our fees, we walked into town and then to Tesco's before coming back to the boat. Beccles Carnival is this weekend so lots of people are getting geared up and ready. Hope the weather is kind to them.:327_sunny:

PS Finished my Chris Crowther book this morning :739_blue_book:

Nice to see the canopy in its rightful place.

If you go on their website and put dates in for December it comes back with available boats and prices so it would appear that they are extending their season.

I had noticed that they seem to be offering this. Another initiative of their new owners perhaps. Guess they will fit winter maintenance around bookings or not have the full fleet on offer all the time.

That or they have made a mistake setting things up on their web site.

The prices don't drop as much as you might expect for such out-of-season bookings.

Yes, that irritates me as well. I guess it's just marketing. They can then use the word "discount" and hope it's picked up by the search engines and social media. And of course, everyone loves a discount - however sneakily applied.

Well if they were going to play that game they could quote the summer holiday price for everything and call all their other prices a discount.

And it means they can't quote the February price as their "from" price.

Fluid pricing is indeed widespead in the greater travel industry. I think the problem with that position for the Broads is that unlike the airlines and tour operators who own or contract the stock, you are dealing with many independent owners and would need agreement from them for a dynamic system to price according to market demand. That might mean occasions where their price drops very low, at times of low demand. I can see many owners not liking the lack of control. Even the hotel bed banks such as Bookings.com don't have this freedom. They negotiate differential rates with the hotels so they might have 5 rooms at one rate and 5 rooms at a higher rate. That's why you sometimes see both rates listed at the same time.

The way the hire boats work seems quite old-fashioned (and I don't mean that as a bad thing), in that there is such a thing as a list price and any discounts for early or late booking are clearly identified as such.

It does seem a little odd that Herbert Woods have a scheme where the price (of course) varies through the year, but if you make a booking for one of their few boats available in February you pay the lowest rate, with a "Winter discount" applied, rather than just having an even lower rate.

Hotels are somewhat different from both hire boats and airline/train/coach tickets in that they very often let you cancel at short notice and get a full refund, even where they operate dynamic pricing, and if there is an option to save money with a non-refundable price the discount is usually quite small.

Having said that, the last time I looked at ferry prices it was similar - the added cost for a flexible ticket wasn't much.

As does May. The price hikes up around 40 - 50 per cent in June and drops substantially after August. I think it's simple economics - those who are not tied to school holidays will go for the cheaper option. The weather is usually very good in September too.

Mind you, roll on December :default_eusa_dance:

I suspect it's not just school holidays - even without that the summer is likely to be more popular, though perhaps the pricing structure would be a bit smoother.

From playing about with the Herbert Woods web site, there doesn't seem to be a premium on school holidays outside the summer.

I have just had a look at the video on which Andrew was talking about it's refurbishment and he mentions it used to be Beam of  Light, before being put into service by Sandersons as Sand Beam. I think he acquired it to refit it again for his fleet.

Interesting...the current Herbert Woods Beam of Lights (or is that Beams of Light?) are Aquafibre Diamond 43s.

While it is impossible to prove any of the comments as fact if you talk to enough people you can get a pretty good feel of what is of most concern, the two overriding comments are to do with cost and problems with the boats and how well or badly the problem is dealt with probably the biggest spoiler for those affected, hardly anyone mentions the BA or associated politics they are only interested in the experience good or bad.

    Fred

As I got home from the Broads this week I passed a neighbour, who said he'd been thinking of a boating holiday for years.

    What's put him off?

He's quite tall and he's worried he'd keep banging his head on things in a boat...

I still think cost is a major factor for families high season, I have had several hirers comment on it and while its not my thing I have friends who do an all in cruise for a lot less than the hire of a top end cruiser.

But it doesn't have to be a top end cruiser to have a very enjoyable holiday.

Lets face the weather has been poor again this year, we have had our fair share of rain & storms and you do have to feel for the families that have opted for boating holidays. It may have been the best week weather wise when I was on the boat from 23rd July, even though we had two storms at night over the week on the Tuesday & Thursday Night.

We had Breydon Water closed to hire-craft last weekend and there are rumors that this may be the case this coming weekend.

I thought the last two weeks were very good weather-wise. Lots of sun, not too hot, and very little rain.

Could have done without the winds on Friday afternoon and Saturday though.

I bet i could turn Jayne 2 there, i managed at pyes mill next to moored boats

We turned our Diamond 43 down there without much trouble.

We tried to stop there for lunch, but it was full and we ended up next to the sugar factory at Cantley.

Nice views if you looked in the other direction...

. The ladies in the tea room were very chatty and friendly, service was good, coffee and cake was very good and I would highly recommend supporting this business. I am sure that we will go back.

Is that the one with a tiny post office inside?

After sitting outside in the sunshine we moved across to one of the seats on the quay near Sandersons. Watched the swing bridge which was interesting. We thought it wasn't going to close at one point, and as it turned out this was the day before they had problems and closed the bridge to river traffic. An indication of what was to come ... maybe.

    Quite possibly.

It was closed to trains as well on the Wednesday - it didn't quite close properly.

I heard that a "rope came off"

I think the swing bridges are fairly old technology - in general the railways in the broads seem somewhat neglected.

Well talking of that bridge I asked the yard what Jayne 2's air draft was, answer not sure, she's been out of the water 4 years and they had rebuilt the sides and upper work, got to the bridge, 5 foot 10 (being generous, you could only just see the quarter mark,) anyway the guys weren't worried, they even let the young lad take her through, with about 2" to spare, so she must be about the lowest in their fleet.

I'd like to have seen it go through.

I was in the right place at the right time, but far too busy in Herbert Woods getting everything out of the boat by 9 so the cleaners could get it ready for the next lot.

We stayed overnight at Womack dyke waiting to pass through ph bridge. Earlier in the week the pilot had confirmed that we would go through about 5pm four hours later than the published low tide at Yarmouth I believe. Rang to check on Sunday morning only to be told we would need to go through by 1pm. No problem, he took us through about 12 with 6.5 showing on the office gauge. Not sure how/why the tide seemed to change by about four hours but I have always struggled to understand the details.

I know the wind is supposed to affect the tides. This seems a bit extreme though.

I never saw the point of those "x rpm = y mph" instructions. They're meaningless and bear no resemblance to the reality of tide and conditions. They may have a negative effect by giving a false impression. Who thought they were a good idea?

I suppose they are there because it used to be the best that could be done.

But not nowadays. I don't know how common GPS speedometers are on hire boats -we had one at the upper helm but not the lower one. I brought an old phone to use just for GPS (so as to not run the battery down on the phones being used for other purposes) and we used that at the lower helm.

I had to remind myself when we saw people overtaking us when we were at the limit that they may not have known what speed they were doing.

The boat came with two labels at the lower helm giving rpm to speed and they were different from each other and also from what the boat actually did.

Considering almost everybody* nowadays has a smart phone I fail to understand why the hire yards don’t tell the hirers to download a free speed app or even the Aweigh app which gives speed and a live map

    Yes - why don't they?

I see that Norfolk Broads Direct have cancelled all their boat trips and day boats for today. And I believe that Herbert Woods were not letting their dayboats out today either.

It's certainly very windy here in Essex this morning with a few showers blowing through.

Seen a couple of Richardson's day boats. One of them with people all over the roof and front, no lifejackets, sounding the horn for fun.

    Not impressed.

Well BA warning or not, I don't fancy being out in this.

I've seen a couple of Bridgecraft boats come in, but otherwise nothing else moving yet.

Even the ducks seem a bit cautious.

Not sure about motor boats, but the flappy things were struggling a bit yesterday. So today they probably will all be moored up -if they have any sense that is.

The one we followed up the Bure yesterday seemed to be doing fine. And making very good progress.

Would have been a lot faster if the sail wasn't reefed.
