  1. Hi when your tube heaters are installed in your engine bay over winter is it best to replace the engine cover boards or leave off for ventilation. I am thinking replace them to aid the insulation but does this cause any safety issues. All your knowledge very much appreciated as always, hopefully by next winter I should be proficient in all things winterising.
  2. Ah so not a botch then, pretty basic method of filtering then, how do you remove them without all the rubbish dropping in the housing?
  3. Hi can someone please tell me if the weed filters pictured are standard or as I am thinking a cheap botch, all the pics I have seen are of a basket type arrangement rather than a tube of mesh. When I took them out today all the rubbish just fell into the bod, if I hadn't had a good wet vac I would have struggled to get it out thx
  4. Hi As my stern glands are water cooled do I have to winterise them separately from the raw water cooling , or is the pipe that runs to the stern gland linked to the raw water system and as such will get some antifreeze when I pump it through the weed filters?
  5. The wires are now all connected and 12v is present, there is no float switch as it is on a manual switch on dash.
  6. The green pipe seems to be a wander hose which is sitting in the bilge bottom, then the clear hose exits the hull. The top diaphragm pump is wired to a switch on dash saying bilge pump. If the pump was working is there any reason why I can't use this set up as a wander hose bilge pump?
  7. Hi this is on a manual switch on the dash with no float switch. I do have an auto bilge pump that is working. I will yry and take the pumps off and remove the impellers.
  8. Hi can anyone please explain my bilge pump set up. Currently there are 2 pumps a strange looking jabsco pump at top and another pump next to it which is teed into the same pipes. Currently neither pumps work , the jabsco turns but nothing sucks up, the bottom one isn't powered up so I attached it to the jabsco 12v feed and nothing seems to happen. If they both worked should they both be powered or has the bottom one conked out and the previous owner bypassed it with the jabsco. Plus if I need a replacement am I just looking for a standard water pump or something special. Thx
  9. Hi Does anyone know if there is a direct replacement available for the controls pic attached (I think they are Volvo Penta). Mine are worn inside and need replacing, I have been told they are not that good anyway as compared to other types (like morse ) they are quite sloppy into gear etc. I know replacements are not cheap but is there something that can be relatively easily slotted on., not by me I add, by an engineer .
  10. Thx this looks ideal not expensive either
  11. Hi has anyone got any recommendations for a decent temperature logger. I would like to try and keep an eye on the temperature of the boat through the winter remotely via WiFi if possible. Or if not get something that will log the temperature drops so I can see what the temperature drop is in engine bay over winter with the tube heaters on every time I visit.
  12. Thats the reason I am asking the question on here, that way I won't be guessing in the future. Advice so far on here has been spot on , with many knowledgeable people who have been able to point me in the right direction , and hence save me some marine engineer costs.
  13. Yes its got a holding tank but I'm guessing with it having a seacock outlet that there must be water in that circuit giving a point that can freeze and hence potentially fracture
  14. Hi another question on winterising. How do i winterise the toilet and shower? Do i close both inlet and outlet sea cocks and then fill toilet bowl with antifreeze and then put antifreeze down the shower thing on the floor ( sorry don't know what its called), activate both then bobs your uncle. Expert knowledge much appreciated again many thanks
  15. I am thinking that I will keep an eye on the long range forecast and will add it as necessary. I am flexible in my job so worst case scenario is that if it looks bad can go up the day before and fill it.
  16. Thats a good tip, especially as the pump on the port engine looks easy to access but starboard looks tricky.
  17. In which case if I intend to use the boat over the winter every 2 or 3 weeks or so, I assume I can do the antifreeze thing on the raw water but leave the impeller in. That way I just need to re antifreeze after each use?
  18. I am up on Weds will take a few and post it thx
  19. Hi is the pump the part in between the diesel tank and the small copper pipe that goes into the heater? It looks like the leak is from the copper pipe where it joins another copper pipe , both tiny bore pipes with small fittings like a gas connection. I have isolated at the valve from tank and it stopped immediately
  20. sorry for another question, but it seems as soon as I delve into one thing I spot another issue that I know nothing about. Noticed today there is diesel leaking from the heater, question is if I switch off the fuel input to it and it keeps leaking so emptying out all the fuel in the hrater , is it like a diesel engine that runs empty and will need bleeding or whatever before it will start again or will it be ok. Obviously don't want to leave diesel leaking until I can get it fixed.
  21. Thanks everyone I think I have the way forward now
  22. In which case how do i get the antifreeze into the weed filter if I don't turn off the seacocks and run engine to clear the pipes on weed filter side of impeller. Could I use a wet/dry vac to suck the water out from that side so I can get the antifreeze started?
  23. Yes got shore power so got myself couple of tube heaters for the engine, and plan was to then put antifreeze in the raw water so if I want to use it in the winter only have to open sea cocks and then away. Everyone has said one of the best times to go out is over the quieter winter months
